A long time ago there lived a man called Maui and one morning while Maui was eating his breakfast, he noticed that he could not see the sun because it had gone down again.
He cried out “ Aaaeeee!!” , and then his brothers came running.
“What happened? “Asked the first brother.
“I could not see what I was eating, “said Maui.
“Oh “, went his first brother, and his older brother added
“Same. We did not get time to fish and hunt.”
“We should do something about it,” they all said.
“I’ve got an idea,” said Maui.
“Well we can catch the sun,” he answered.
“How can we capture the sun,” they asked.
Maui shared his plan with them.
So the five brothers went to make some flax ropes and as the five brothers were walking for days and days, they got hungry. So they stopped to eat.
As soon as Maui and his brothers arrived, they saw that the sun was starting to come up. They quickly covered the hole and hid behind some rocks.
When the sun rose, Maui shouted “NOW!!”, and the brothers jumped up and pulled the flax ropes as hard as they could.
The sun struggled but they held him. He screamed in pain.
Just then Maui jumped up and called” You must go more slower great sun or I will beat you with my fathers jaw bone”, and he started hitting the sun.
“OK, OK, I will go slower only if you stop hitting me with that jaw bone.”
And that is what happened and so today we have enough sun and daylight to eat, hunt and fish
