This was such a fun activity! We have been working on contractions. So today our young surgeons performed surgery on the contraction bones. The bones had two words written on them. We had to cut out the necessary letter(s) to create the contraction for those two words. Our surgeons were sooooooo adorable! Check us out:

We each chose an overused word from our writing and wrote it on a cinnamon bun. We then worked with a buddy to come up with several synonyms for that word that would make our writing more descriptive and interesting. We also checked our thesaurus for any additional synonyms we could use. Finally, we wrote all of those words on our cinnamon bun. Our cinnamon buns are on our cookie sheet bulletin board so we can use them in our writing.

It's hard to believe we are half way through this school year. To celebrate we did several fun activities. We wrote about our thoughts of being half-way through the year. We saw how many times we could write our name in half a minute. We did jumping jacks for half a minute. We kept time to the half-hour and saw how many ways we could show a half-dollar with coins. We learned that there are 6 eggs in a half-dozen, 4 ounces in half a cup, 30 seconds in a half-minute, and 6 inches in a half foot. We used a half-foot measuring stick to see how tall we were. AND...we created an animal at switchzoo.com that was half one animal and half another animal. (Some of us actually created an animal that was one-third one animal, one-third another animal, and one-third another animal.) It was a fun day and we are looking forward to our 100th day of school! To see our switchzoo animal creations, click on Room 105 in the yellow sidebar and then click on a student's blog name, or click on an animal name in the red sidebar.

This week we wrote about how Christmas is special to us. We then copied those words into a Wordle. Click on the Christmas Wordle links to the left or click on the Room 105 link to the right to find the children's wordles. I was so proud of how well the children did, not only with their Wordles, but with the technology that they learned to complete this process. They typed their words onto a Word document and saved it to their H drive on our school server. They then copied and pasted those words onto the wordle site, ABCya Word Clouds (http://www.abcya.com/word_clouds.htm). Next they selected the design for their wordle and took a screen capture of it. Finally, they had to drag their screen capture to my Drop Box so that I could embed them on their blogs. Wow! That was quite an accomplishment!

We have been busy blogging this month about Thanksgiving. We also created a turkey in disguise so that we wouldn't get eaten for Thanksgiving (Thank you to our families for their help with the artwork!) Our turkey pictures were scanned. Then we each wrote, read and recorded a story about our disguised turkey. Finally we "blabberized" our stories. Check them out by clicking on the "I'm Not a Turkey" links on the left side bar. Or you can search a specific student's story by clicking on "Room 105" in the right yellow side bar and then select the student you want to view. ENJOY! We would love if you left us some comments! Check out one of our turkey disguises here:
