Glitter Words

My classroom blog is meant to be a tool for students' voices. Their writing is real writing with purpose, opinions, observations and real reasons. The fifth graders are thinking and responding to their world and this blog is for them to express those thoughts. Fifth graders' lives are bigger than the classroom and so the blog is an extension of school and themselves.

Our Wishes based on The Christmas Genie

Article posted January 5, 2011 at 08:39 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 5637

During the month of December, we read The Christmas Genie by Dan Gutman.  Mrs. Walters's fifth grade class has one hour to make a collective wish from a genie.  The kids all share their wishes but the one that is granted wasn't  a wish that was shared.

The fifth graders of Mrs. Melland's class have posted their one wish.  Just like the book, some students made serious wishes while others made whimical wishes.  Read their wishes and post your opinion about the pros and cons of the wish coming true!

The fifth graders were lucky to attend UND's Engineering Day in September. We took pictures of interesting moments and places during the field trip. Then each student created a VoiceThread and asked a question to stir conversation.

Cats vs. Dogs: Which is the better pet?

We've been learning that arguments (opinions) needs supporting reasons. This assignment asked students to argue which is the better pet, a cat or a dog with supporting reasons.
