What Day of the Week Has the Most Roadkill?

What Day of the Week Has the Most Roadkill?

For my roadkill project I chose to study the amounts of roadkill on certain days. I wanted to see which day of the week had the most roadkill, which day had the least amount of roadkill, and if there was really a difference between days. I first started by guessing what days would have the most roadkill and what days would have the least. I thought that the weekends wouldn’t have as much roadkill as the weekdays. I thought that the weekend wouldn’t have as much roadkill because people are usually home on the weekends and aren’t traveling as much. For weekdays I thought much differently. I thought that there would be much more roadkill on weekdays because there are more drivers on the road. There are a lot of people going to work and taking their kids to school, also there would be school buses during the week.

I collected data and tallied up the amount of roadkill for each day of an eight week period. Saturday and Sunday had a total of eight animals. Monday through Friday had a total of forty animals. Saturday had four animals and Sunday did as well. Thursday had the most with seventeen animals killed. The weekdays had more killed each day compared to Saturday and Sunday. I think my hypothesis was correct because when I tested it, it was true.

The results were what I had first expected to come out of the data. I thought that the weekdays definetly would have more roadkill than weekends. Everything I predicted was what happened, except for Thursday having seventeen animals killed. I think this threw off my data a little because I thought that the days would be almost equal with the amounts of roadkill. Monday had eight animals, Tuesday had five animals, Wednesday there were six animals, Thursday had seventeen animals, and Friday had four animals. I predicted that there would be about six to eight animals each day.  I think the weather might have affected the amounts of roadkill because we started in early March and that is when there was still snow on the ground and most animals were still in hibernation. I also think this was a factor because less people would be driving most likely due to road conditions. I noticed that by the time it was Easter, which was April twelfth this year, there was more and more roadkill being found.

Next time I would predict the same thing to happen if I were doing this project at the same time of the year. If I were to study the amounts of roadkill throughout the winter in an eight week period I would expect the roadkill amounts to be significantly lower. If I were to study it in the summer for the same amount of time, I would expect the numbers of roadkill to be higher than when I did the project this time. I think the amounts of roadkill would be so much higher in the summer because the more people are traveling and there wouldn’t be snowstorms. Also all of the animals would be out of hibernation by then. The project I am working on right now is only on Rye and New Castle, New Hampshire. If I were to collect data from all of New Hampshire the numbers would be much higher because we only collected data from a couple roads. In New Hampshire there are  lots of roads, so there would be much more roadkill recorded.

Roadkill in Rye and New Castle, New Hampshire 2009

Article posted May 8, 2009 at 05:40 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 300

I made a graph on the total number of animals killed in Rye and New Castle, New Hampshire. Something i noticed about my graph was that the number of gray squirrels way higher than any of the other numbers. There were twenty-one gray squirrels killed in eight weeks. Compared to the other animals that is really high. There was only one mink, deer, and red squirrel. I think that this year the number of gray squirrels is over populated.

Seedfolks

Seedfolks

Paul Fleischman

The book Seedfolks is about all different people that are attracted to a old lot that is transforming into a garden. The book begins with a little girl named Kim who is Vietnamese. Her father died before she was born and she wanted to have a connection with him. Kim's father loved to plant and she decided if she planted lima beans, father would be watching her. The rest of the book is about all different people of different nationalities who live in the area and would like to plant in the garden. The garden is like a community garden that is being cleaned up because there is all trash.

For my seed packet I chose Sae Young. Sae Young is from Korea and used to live with a lot of people in her house. She had a husband, but he died. Sae Young moved to the United States and started a Dry Cleaning company. One day while she was working someone came in and robbed her then beat her up. She stayed in her house for a long time because she was scared. When Sae Young finally started to come back around outside Sae Young walks by the garden. She feels welcome and safe there. Sae Young plants hot peppers. I chose Sae Young because I liked how she tells what she had to go through and how she came through it.

Stock Market Report

Final Report of Stock Market

In math class we were given ten thousand dollars to invest in the stock market.  I picked Dell Inc. because I wanted to see it the stocks would go down on computers in a bad economy. It went down and I lost money. I chose IBM because I recognized the name in the Dow Jones list as a business that is doing good. I ended up making a profit on that stock. The last company I picked was Coca-Cola. I picked it because it is an older company and I thought it would be doing well. I was and in the end I had a loss.

If I were to change anything about what I invested in I would chose more carefully. I would not invest in computers because in a bad economy people probably would not buy computers. I would buy more stocks in IBM because it was the only company that I invested in that did well and made me money. I would no buy as many stocks in Coca-Cola because in the end I lost money on it. It was doing well as I checked it every week.

If someone were to invest in the sock market I would tell them to not invest in computers or electronics. Dell Inc. lost me the most money out of all my stocks. I would tell them to invest in business machines because they were doing well when I bought them and they were cheap, so I bought a lot of them and that made me the most money. When I bought Coca-Cola it was doing well and every week that I checked it the stocks were up. My advice would be to buy the stocks low and sell them high.

Weather Art

Article posted February 2, 2009 at 05:52 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 248

This is a still life of common objects. Our art teacher set up a table and told us to look through a viewfinder to see what we wanted to draw. The viewfinder was a piece of paper with a hole for us to pick the angle to draw. I picked this angle because i liked how the penguin was sitting in the bucket and how the basketball was placed.

First I drew with pencil then I went over the lines with elmer's glue  to make texture.

Ice Storm

Article posted December 16, 2008 at 03:37 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 351

This weekend in the Seacoast of New Hampshire there was a terrible ice storm that whiped out power to over 250,000 people. it was really scary. At about 2:30 a.m. Friday it all started. There were trees and power lines falling. Heat was off and all cable and electricity. Some people still don't have their power, but I was lucky. I got my power back on Friday and I also had a generator to keep some of our electricity.
