Roadkill Roads 2009

Article posted June 1, 2009 at 11:21 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 453

Roadkill Roads

I chose to study how much roadkill was on the roads in Rye/ New Castle from the past three years. My hypothesis was that Washington Road would have the most roadkill because it is one of the main roads in Rye, and it pretty much goes from one end to another.

I discovered that over the past three years a couple of the roads went from being full of roadkill to not much at all, or not much to a lot, or to about the same for all of the years, or to little amount to a big amount but then back to a large amount. The different roads had different effects on how much road kill was on them because some roads are busier than others and there may have been a couple of roads that nobody has been on.

Yeah, I expected that Washington road would have the most road kill and I was right. I expected that Washington road would have the most road kill because it is a very busy road and in a lot of cases you have to go that road to get a lot of places so that was a good place to guess. With most experiments not exactly everything can be accurate so we could have missed a lot of road kill, not gone on every street just things like that.

Next year I predict that maybe there will be more road kill than this year, because maybe it will get warmer out earlier in the year and than more animals will come out. I would also look at more roads and probably go back more years to get more information for more accurate

My inspiration for this shoe project was the beach, because when we started these it was in the middle of winter and I was just waiting for summer to come because it was also snowing

With all of the information collected by the school, we were able to make graphs on how much roadkill for the Rye? New Castle Area.

Earthcast 09

badgeIn our individual groups we each got a topic to write about for the 2009 earthcast. My group had pollution. So WREM had to write a paragraph on world pollution prevention and then BHSA had to write about water pollution and a list of ways to prevent it. I, MHRY had to write up a paragraph on the topic of pollution prevention right in your own backyard.  It took acouple of days of teamwork and we almost didn't make our deadline but in the end we pulled it together for a spectacular presentation!

Seedfolks seed packet

Article posted April 21, 2009 at 09:05 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 628

Seedfolks

By Paul Fleischman

The whole school read the book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. The 7th graders then used some of the characters to make their own seed packets. We had to create a seed packet with a character and their plant. It had to include a title, a quote, pictures, and instructions on how make the plant thrive. We had to make two, one with a character from the book and then another with somebody you know. I chose Gonzalo from the book and my cat Samantha Marie. I chose Gonzalo because I really like how he was always helping his great Tío Juan and that they were always together and it enabled me to talk more about Gonzalo. I also liked how he was very mature for his age. I chose Samantha because she came to mind and I thought that she would make a great seed packet!

Antarctic Flag

Article posted March 3, 2009 at 09:41 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 570

I put countries on the flag to represent all of the countries that own bases in Antarctica and that they all signed the Antarctic treaty- which is what my flag is about. I put the saying “Let peace ring” because that is why the treaty was established, so we can keep peace in Antarctica. I used bells and a peace on my flag to enhance the saying “Let freedom ring” so the peace sign represents the peace part let PEACE ring, and the bells are the ring part in let peace RING! I outlined everything in black so it is BOLD and easier to see then the pencil. I used the colors red, gold, and orange for the peace sign because they remind me of peace, I used the gold/orange, for the bells because when I think bells they are always orange/gold, and then I used blue to show the ice, and the waters of Antarctica!

Final Stock Report

Article posted March 3, 2009 at 09:17 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 500

Final Stock Report

We were given $10,000 each to buy stock from NASDAQ or NYSE. So the four stocks I picked were Google Inc., Apple Inc.., Biogen Idec, And Campbell’s Soup Co. I picked Google because it had a very steady 52 week range. Apple had a very high steady price as well. Biogen Idec I picked because my aunt works there and thought it would be fun to monitor the progress, and then finally Campbell Soup because I really love there soup!

Now that I have researched and watched my stocks I would make a few changes to my portfolio. Well, I would take a couple away from Campbell’s and Biogen and add one to Apple or Google. I would make those changes because they didn’t do overly well so I could’ve made more money with another Apple or Google. But other then that I wouldn’t change a thing, because I really like my results.

My advice to those who are choosing stocks do fun companies or products that you like and have some fun with it. Pick steady stocks so that you don’t close down in the middle and lose a lot of money. And remember the higher the price of your stock more money you will make! So safe stock hunting!!

Penguin Still Life

Article posted February 2, 2009 at 11:16 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 223

To make this piece I looked at a still life containing baskets, penguins, and sports equipment. I had a big black piece of paper and some of the coloring utensils used were pastels glue and pencil. I sat at my table in art and we drew what angle we were sitting at. Before we started we did thumbnail sketches of two different angles. I really liked the first angel i drew so I went with that one. It took about 3 or four classes- included the drying process! I had alot of fun and I really would like to do that again!!

Ice Storm

Article posted December 16, 2008 at 09:36 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 547

On December 11, 2008 most of New Hampshire had an ice storm that effected them in horrible ways. Well on Thursday night my power went out at like 4 in the morning. But luckily I had my woodstove to keep my house warm and to boil water to make easy food like mac n cheese, or stuff like ramen noodles. But we had one conflict, showers. It was pretty cold and taking cold showers isn't good for youu in the winter so on saturday I went to my friend's house and took a shower and spent time at his house while he and my parents were at a party. So then the next day I read, and went shopping, and then my dad, brother, and I went to another friends house spent time over there and while we were there we got a call from my mom that we had gotten power back!

Joe Flood's Visit!

Article posted December 5, 2008 at 12:13 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 478

For the past four days the 7th graders have had the chance to meet and learn from a man named Joe Flood. Joe Flood was an alcoholic and a drug user from an early age. Even though his life wasn’t the most wonderful he turned it around by teaching kids about his life and how it affected him. His main point was to make you aware of what drugs do to you and how it affects your whole life. He didn’t say don’t do drugs he just kind of made us not want to do them because of what he told us about other students and their stories.

Well I learned that drugs do a lot more then you think that they do. For example, they mess with your brain making you more accustomed to drugs so every time you do them you need more and more to make you feel the same feeling as the first time you had a single one. So Joe taught me that drugs do so much more than just make you high and he also taught me that I never want to do drugs at all and how to withstand peer pressure and the temptation of drugs!

Antarctica-Penguins

Article posted November 21, 2008 at 11:17 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 442

There was an adelie penguin all alone across Lake Hoare! But that is not a good thing because Lake Hoare is far away from the ocean and so the little penguin has no food to eat and it is not likely that he would be able to find his way out of the valley. So Ms.Ellwood called up a friend of hers after the dive to see if she could come and help the penguin. Ms. Ellwood is not aloud to handle the penguins herself because she doesn’t have a permit and her friend does have a permit!

But she came back a couple of days later to no penguin.  She couldn’t find it. And then Ms. Ellwood got word that the the search team was also unable to make it. So they totally lost the penguin but Ms. Ellwood seems to be very optimistic aobut the whole situation and she said tat in her mind the penguin took a left turn and went all the way back to the ocean and was reunited with her colony! 
