Vishal’s blog for The Phantom Tollbooth

I think the main message in Norton Juster’s book, The Phantom Tollbooth, is inspiration. I believe that it is the answer because when Milo was in his room at the beginning of the story, he did not have any inspiration. But now, at the very end of the book, he really had inspiration. The lesson really moved him forward in life. All the characters within the tollbooth helped Milo. Milo has recieved this inspiration by adventure through the tollbooth. For example, King Azaz taught Milo the meaning of language and how it can affect him. The Mathemagician taught him the importance of numbers. Dr. Dischord and Dynne taught Milo the meaning of sound and how sound hfas meaning. Now that he has inspiration, he can find the true meaning of life. Milo will have inspiration from now on.

minicoop’s Westminster Woods Trip

Article posted March 31, 2009 at 07:54 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 314

When I was at Westminster Woods, I had a lot of fun. I liked the cabins a lot. I slept on a top bunk. I was afraid that I would fall, but I knew I was safe. When we had hot chocolate, it really warmed my heart. These are my favorite activities at Westminster Woods
My favorite activity at camp was the cargo net. I really liked the cargo net because I was really looking forward to it even before I went. It was really exciting to walk on it. I just like sitting there watching a battle between my teacher and 20 kids. It was really funny. I really like tackling people. Even if I got rope burns or I got hurt, I would be ok.
My favorite trip to go to was Fort Ross. I got to see cannons, gun powder, and a lot of rifles. I think there were about 30 rifles! There were a lot of dandelions at Fort Ross. It was so cool. There was this building that had the windows slightly tilted. It was so funny! It was the favorite place that I went to. I was also looking forward to Fort Ross.
The information that I learned was that you can tell what an animal eats by its scat! That I never knew! On the hike through Armstrong Redwoods, my naturist, Roots, found a piece of scat. One of my friends figured out it was from a skunk. I believed him. I will always remember that! It was a nice piece of information.
When I am old and gray, my memory will be that the food was very good. The pizza was crunchy because I put croutons on it. It was awesome! Also, I accidentally poured too much gravy on my mashed potatoes, so the bottom of my bread was soaked in gravy. It still tasted good. I couldn’t ask for more.
I will never forget my trip to Westminster Woods. My expectations were met. It was the best trip I ever went on! It would be nice if I could go back. I greatly enjoyed it. I hope you will go too!

Megan Maxwell was a fifteen year old who experienced the Johnstown Flood. It took place the day after Memorial Day, which was May 31, 1889. Marden Dahlstedt stated descriptions that made the reader think the situation that Megan Maxwell was in would be a “nightmare world.”
An example of a quote that Dahlstedt phrased was,
“ The trunk of a giant tree came rushing past, its roots waving above the water like a hundred searching fingers”
My opinion on this description is that I felt really terrified. I felt this way because I was thinking that the tree was going to grab onto Megan’s mattress and pull her into the water. Megan would drown in the water and the main character of the book would be gone. I figured that the tree had not caught onto Megan’s mattress, but it caught onto a dead horse.
Another description that Marden Dahlstedt quoted was,
“ ...showers of broken glass winged a thousand tiny arrows...”

I was really scared and frightened. I felt this way because I thought that the arrows were after Megan Maxwell, but I also figured out that none of the arrows actually hurt Megan. Well, I don’t know for sure, but that’s what I assume.

As you can see, Marden Dahlstedt can make the reader picture images that would feel like a nightmare world. I think the writer does this because she wants the reader to think about these selected quotes of the book. Marden Dahlstedt can be a scary writer!

Our trip to Coloma

Our class field trip to Coloma was very fun and educational. I liked the part when we went on our hike. I liked it because it was very tiring and adventurous. We also walked to a cemetery full of dead people. This was very scary. I also learned how to gold mine the correct way.

Traveling to Golden Gulch

Our voyege to Golden Gulch was very challenging for our mining team. We had to make hard decisions. One hard decision was that we had to choose a route for getting to Golden Gulch. Another decision was when our oxen were starving because they didn’t have enough grass; we didn’t know what to do. We could walk all the way back to our starting point, or we could push our oxen and see if we could go all the way. It was very difficult. It was also very expensive because we had to spend money for two trips. That totaled up to 84 gold nuggets. It was also very difficult because we had to sail around the dangerous Cape Horn. Some other consequences were that on our first try, there wasn’t enough grass for our oxen on the land so they died. On our second try, when we had to sail the Cape Horn route, it was really scary and stormy. It was also very monotonous. But when we got to Golden Gulch, we were able to stake a claim. Since our journey was really rough, our luck will change.

minicoop500's blog for The Cay

In Chapter 15 of the book, The Cay, Theodore Taylor kills Timothy, one of the two main characters. I thought it was depressing when Timothy died because he helped Phillip, a 12 year old boy, survive on a deserted cay. I think the author kind of foreshadowed that Timothy was going to get sick. People wouldn’t think that he would kill him. I think it was a good idea to kill the character because it would make the ending of The Cay very dramatic. I think this was the reason why Timothy was chosen to not be able to live. I also think that it was a good idea for Theodore Taylor to make a prequel-sequal for this book. In the prequel-sequal, Theodore wrote about what happened to Timothy before The Cay, and he also wrote about what happened to Phillip after The Cay. He did this by alternating chapters. Chapter 15 of The Cay was a very histrionic chapter, but it made me think what would happen next!
