The Stock Market

Article posted January 9, 2013 at 07:06 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 100

When I think of the stock market I think of a very large room with many people everywhere trying to do work. In reality that is partially correct but, there is much more that goes on with the New York Stock Exchange.  The NYSE is the financial capital of the world. Every other country in the world looks upon it to see what is new and what is going on. The NYSE on Wall Street is the largest marketplace. The building is filled with hundreds maybe even thousands of people every day to experience what happens in this large building. I have watched three videos that sum up the stock market for people who want to know more. The basics facts that I learned about the stock market were that twice a day a bells goes of signaling the beginning and close of stock trading for one day. There are also two main rooms in the NYSE building: the garage and the main room. In each of these rooms are things on the wall like TVs that are called information boards. They tell traders and brokers important information on currencies, bonds, indexes, and equities. There is also a ticker tape that tells how much a stock is up or down in a certain time and how many shares a certain company has sold. All around on the main floor there are traders executing stocks for their own use but also for companys' accounts. Each stock in the NYSE has its own post and panel identified with a number and letter. Anybody could but a stock either at the building or electronically over the computer or smart phone. Many people have very important jobs that if they don' do there will be a problem. One example of this is would be a designated market maker. This person specifically trades certain stocks on behalf of customers. Another example is the monitor. The person at the monitor makes sure everything is operating in order. The work in what they call the command center. They make sure all systems are up and running. All-in-all the NYSE is a very bid market place that holds many stocks which people can take a share in and involve people who hold important jobs to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The four stocks I took a share in were PPL Corp, Kohl's Corp, Walt Disney Co, and Coca Cola Co. I chose these four stocks because they are things I hear about often and I wanted to learn how they were doing economically.

Watch this video to learn more about the NYSE.

Saint Brigid of Ireland

Article posted October 16, 2012 at 01:16 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 163

Although I didn’t know her personally the thing she did for me was extraordinary. I recently found out she died. She lived a long life of about 72 years from her birth in 451 AD until her death in 523 AD. Brigid was the most generous and caring person you may have ever met. She was born and also died in Ireland. More information is now being released about this wonderful person now that she has passed. Her parents were baptized by Saint Patrick who she became friends with later in her life. They also say she was sent to a fosterage until she was at the age at which she was able to return to her father’s house taking over her mother’s responsibilities. At a very early age she took a liking to religious life. She was not much older than thirteen when she first helped me. I am a poor leper who has been left on the streets because nobody likes me. While Brigid’s father was talking to the king, she waited in the chariot and that’s when I approached her. She looked as if she was from a wealthy family and if I was lucky maybe she could supply me with some sort of alms. That’s when Brigid gave me her father’s favorite sword. After thanking her I ran off into the distance to see if there would be a problem with the very generous gift this kind young girl gave me. Her father and the king egressed from the palace and walked over to the chariot. Once her father saw what had happened he was furious. I continued on my begging spree and left only catching the few last words the king said, “Leave her alone, for her merit before God is greater than ours.” For many days after my encounter with Brigid I felt as if I followed her I would become more grateful for the things I had so I secretly followed her. As I observed her ways of life and her family it was obvious that her father was sick of the way she was acting and wanted to make her somebody else’s responsibility. She refused to marry anyone and kept loyal to God. I was with her when she founded the Kildare Abbey for monks and nuns and when Saint Mel embarked her as a convent founder.

When Brigid finally moved out of her father’s house, I saw many less fortunate people visiting her and asked to be healed or for alms. Once again, I was one of them. She performed many miracles one of them was for me. It was one September morning and I was very hungry. I went up to Brigid and asked her for a cow. She couldn’t get the cow right away and I didn’t want to wait so she offered to heal me. I feared that if I was healed that I wouldn’t get alms from anyone so I refused the offer. She told me there was nothing to worry about and if I believed in God he would provide what was needed. She blessed me in water and I was no longer sick with leperacy. Even though I was no longer a leper people still did not like me. I continued to secretly follow and watch Brigid and find ways change my life and get closer to the Lord.

As I stayed around scoping out Brigid’s great religious life I realized that it was not all fun and games. She had to overcome struggles like anyone at the time. As I noted as one of her struggles was being accepted even though her family didn’t agree with her choice of vocation. She went outside and prayed to God every day to be accepted not only by people of the community but especially by her parents who didn’t want to take care of her. Another struggle that I noticed was that she provided everything that was needed for the less fortunate but sometimes had very little or nothing for herself. I saw that when a woman came knocking on her door asking for something to eat. Brigid had nothing but a dish of butter to offer so she turned the woman down. The woman said that the butter would be okay and when Brigid turned to head for the table there were three trays of butter. Because Brigid had faith in God to provide what was needed she was able to give the woman butter. That was what she was telling me all along, if you believe in what God can do He will do it for you. It was amazing being able to see God working though this one woman to help the people that had nothing. It changed my way of thinking and I was able to be more generous than I was in the past.

Postscript

I have picked Saint Brigid of Ireland as the saint I wish to choose for Confirmation. I chose this saint because we share some of the same struggles, she helped me how to figure out problems, there are values she possessed that I can imitate in the world today, and why they were chosen as a saint. Saint Brigid and I share some of the same struggles. The main struggle we both face is being not accepted in a group that includes people we care about. Her struggle of being accepted was on a family level, not being accepted by her father for her calling. For me, it is within a social atmosphere. Today in the world many people hold grudges over things that could happened ten years ago. I’m not accepted into certain groups because people don’t know how to let things go and accept they might have different feelings now then they used to. I also chose Brigid because she helps me solve certain problems. She taught me that if I am in a tough situation to that I can trust God to provide me with the right solution to figure the problem out. The values that Brigid had that I can imitate to use in the world today are how she gave what was needed to the poor, and healed the sick. Although I cannot literally heal the sick, I can heal the ones I have hurt. She also gave to the poor. I am blessed that I have food to eat and a house to give me shelter. Many people have no money and are living on the streets. The least we can do in this world is to donate a few dollars to people who need it more than you. During her lifetime she was always regarded as a saint. After she died she became a saint because she had common sense, and a loving, kind, generous heart that she used to help the poor. She is remembered because she kept pursuing her dream of becoming a nun by not letting her father come between her and her work. She didn’t care if he was mad at her, she just wanted to help people less fortunate than she was and give them what they needed. Whether it was supplying alms, or healing a leper, she was always willing to help. The name I wish to be called at Confirmation is Brigid.

Super Size Me!

Article posted June 1, 2012 at 11:55 AM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 653

Nutrition is a very big part of being healthy. To contain a helathy lifestyle we can't eat fast food for every day of the week. But some people choose to do. The people who choose to do that put themselves in danger to having many problems with their health.

The video we watched, super size me, explaind how a man would eat Mcdonalds for a whole month. Before he started he visited a gastrologist, a regular doctor, a nutritionist, and a exercise physiologist. The whole point of the video was to get the point across that fast food is very fattening and that you can't eat it every day. Because his body was not used to the food, he got sick on the 2nd or 3rd day. He said it was like quitting smoking. That after you stop for 5 days you are good but in his case after you ate the food for 5 days. After a few days, he again visited the doctors again. He gained a little wait and his blood pressure was high. Along with not eating properly he was also not exercising as much a normal, Which also had an impact on his weight.

During this video I realized that too much bad fatty food is not good for you. Occasionally it is okay but not every single day. I learned many of the illnesses that can occur from the intake of fast food everyday. People should know how to manage their diet. If people are going to eat athat much, they should al least exercise. Moderate physical activity is walking or running done at less than 60% of max heart rate for age. Max heart rate is 200 beats/minute minus the persons age.

Learning About Macedonia

Article posted February 7, 2012 at 06:58 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 574

Our 7th grade class worked on a prooject this year that gave us the oppurtunity to research about an assigned country, see how the culture of that country and ours is different, and after all the researching we made it into a book. My assigned country was Macedonia. At that start of this project I had no idea about Macedonia, but after all the research I had a fairly good idea of how the country preformed all kinds of different things. Wer also got to see hopw the assigned country was different from our country in several ways. We had to see the different customs and culture of the country we were assigned. Last of all we got to make all the researched material into a online book. For this project we mainly had to research about the country and record all he information. We had to do he projects because it was a social studies assignment.

MDG-Millennium Development Goals

Article posted October 19, 2011 at 01:59 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 1149

In 2000, 198 leaders from around the world met in New York to make a focal point to join efforts and make a world that presents worrisome statistics that endanger the perpetuation of generations to come. Many people do not have enough food, water, money, etc. to live. The result of this meeting is for a commitment for 2015 id to help the world. etter understanding.

The eight goals are 1 eradicate extreme poverty and hunger  2 achieve universal primary education  3 promote gender equality to empower women  4 reduce child poverty  5 improve material health  6 combat HIV Aids malaria and other diseases  7 ensure enviornmental sustainability  8 develop a global partenership for development.

This paragraph will tell you about a organization that has to do with the millennium goals. The group I chose FAO.  The FAO is a group that mans Food and Agricultural Organization. This organization is working for the millennium goals. Their main goal is goal 1 relates directly to hunger, which is the primary global issue of concern for FAO. Some developing countries have made impressive gains in achieving the hunger-related targets, but many are falling behind. For more information on the prevalence of hunger worldwide, see The State of Food Insecurity in the World, published annually by FAO. Click here to read more!

My Roller Coaster Project!!

Article posted April 5, 2011 at 10:42 AM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 792

Today I am here to tell you about roller coasters! This year in science we do a roller coaster project in which we have to learn the physics and the way coasters are built. We learned Newton's 3 Laws of Motion which say:   1- An object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless an outside  force acts upon it.        2-The acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the size of the net force applied.              3-that for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction.

In my group we made a roller coaster named the "Blurple Extreme" It was black and purple hence the name Blurple. Our coaster had 2 hills in the beginning, then 2 loops, and then straight, then it went up hill. In my group I was the historian. I found out lawsuits, the highest coaster, the fastest, etc.  I learned that a girl got her feet cut off at 6 flags adventure and that the largest and fastest is King Da Kah. The physicist learned about acceleration, and kinetic energy. The engineer learned about inertia and momentum.

The outcome of our roller coaster was that it worked!!! It looked awesome!!! The only thing I would of change would be that I would have made a bigger hill and 3 loops and a hill up to end. But after that it was the best roller coaster I have ever made. Ha it's the only roller coaster I'll ever make.

The Big One !

People actually ride this rollercoaster for fun !!

It towers over everything for miles apart from Blackpool tower itself. This is the initial drop at the very south end of the park.
