Oct. 13th ~ Open House

As you can tell we've had a few technical difficulties with our class blog, first I can't get the students postings to post and second I've had to figure out how to post photos which is hard since MCPS won't let me post them while at school. Today was a super open house and thank you to all the parents who came in today to learn about 2nd grade! When we arrived this morning our butterflies had all come out so we were very excited! Today Ms. Whyte taught us about what they need to live and we fed them sugar water on sponges so that they could use their proboscis to drink just like if they were in nature. We also had Ms. Razzi visit us this afternoon from the Audubon Society to do a green kids activity about butterflies and their habitats!

Our caterpillars are still pretty small. They live in cups on our desks. Mine likes to climb up the inside of his cup and learn with me. ~ Jacob D.

Today was our first time to attempt blogging as a class and boy did we have trouble! I know for the kids and for myself using a new program is a learning process but I'm still trying to figure out why all of my students blog postings won't post. I guess time and practice will teach us all the ins and outs of the program. And if everything worked right the first time there would never be any challenges for us!

 We had town meeting and spelling this morning. We learned a new word study in each group today. Also in science we talked about what a scietist is and wrote what we thought a scietist is. ~Megan McWright

 Today we met our caterpillars! They are so tiny and cute. An amasing fact we learned is that they mostly sleep, eat, and frass! ~Jacob W

International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Today was a very exciting day at school! We celebrated International Talk Like a Pirate Day with stories and activities. We began the day with Miss Whyte signing up her crew for a voyage and giving us all pirate hats. Then we read the book How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long. 
Next, we followed directions to create our own "Jolly Rogers" (flags) and wrote pirate stories to fly at our desks all day. Some students worked on treasure maps and explored the open seas looking for treasure! Our favorite word of the day is "AAAAArrrrrrrgggggggggg!"
  
This afternoon we had some visitors.... Our caterpillars arrived!! Today we learned about what our caterpillars need to eat and we made them homes in our classroom. Each caterpillar will live in a small cup on our desks! It was a very exciting day for everyone! Check out Jacob's blog about our caterpillars first day in our room!
