On the bus,
Out of the city,
Along a bumpy gravel road,
The bus stops.
We leave the bus as quietly as we can.
We walk to the edge,
We look down and out,
What do we see?
We see Wascana creek, hills, rocks, trees, sand,
We hear insects buzzing, birds chirping and Victoria pointing out the points of interest!
Stopped for a snack of Black Paper plant
Tasted like kelp!? Buffalo snot??
Quiet time is over, we are off on an adventure!
Down the path, passed some rocks
That the glaciers from Ice age dropped off,
Really?
Down to the pond!
Frogs, more frogs!
Mosquitoes, more mosquitoes!
Larve mosquito, dragon fly,
Dip, dip, splash!
Whoops, good thing the sun is warm,
Helps to dry out the shoes, pant legs, sleeves!
Lunch,
On the banks of the mighty Wascana!
No pirates today!
How boring!
Wait a track! Deer, coyote,
What else can I find?
Off we go to the Enchanted forest.
Storytime,
Listening,
Time to build fairy houses!
Let's get to work.
Off we go again.....
Up, up, up, up
In Spring,
Water washes down this path
Erosion!
Up, up, up, up!
The top!
Flat top,
Turn around, look down, look ...
See the sand bank where we had lunch?
Hungry again?
Let's take a walk.
See these salt and vinegar ...ants?
Really? Want a taste?
WOW!
What a great trip!
Thank-you Victoria!
Thank-you parent volunteers!
Back on the bus,
Ticks came along for the ride,
How many ticks went home with us?
No one knows for sure
But they are still visiting in our classroom!

Now what do I need?
I have a little seed,
To grow, what will it need?
A little cup I found,
It was tall and round,
I took a little dirt,
Made a mess on my shirt!
Dug a hole with wiggly fingers,
A little dirt on fingers lingers.
Buried that seed, added water.
Moved the cup where it was hotter!
Window in the sunlight!
So very, very bright!
It started with a little sprout,
A little, tiny plant no doubt!
A stem, a leaf,
Good grief!
My little seed is a plant.
And look, it has a pet ant!

Playground + rocks + kids = questions
What are the questions?
Imagine, look at the ground covered in rocks,
Some are red, white, dotted, black,
Some are several colors mashed together,
There are sharp, pointy rocks
There are smooth, round rocks,
There are little hands gathering rocks,
There are big eyes discovering rocks.
Then a little murmur......
Why?
Why?
Why?
What makes them different?
Why are they different?
How did this happen?
How come this one is dark inside and light outside?
Why is this rock all colors?
Why is this rock so ROUGH?
Why is this rock smoooooth?
Why, why, why, why, why?
I enjoy questions! Don't you?
The quest to find the answers
Take us on a journey of learning.
We read. We view.
We listen. We communicate.
We evaluate.
We experiment and we watch.
We explore and we learn.
I enjoy questions! Don't you?

Where do questions come from?
Questions come
From stories, picture books,
Nonfiction books, vocabulary words,
Posters, pictures, videos,
Maps and a globe, discussions,
Minds of children, ideas tumbling,
And then the questions?
What is this?
How does it work?
What is this animal called?
Is it cold or warm blooded?
What does it eat?
Where does it live?
And then the SEARCH begins.
But in the end the answers thoughtfully
considered cause MORE questions!
Our class enjoys asking questions!

Pickles was a very special panda. He lived in a condo with his best friend Mike Monkey. They were members of the 'Three R's'. They went around to many places talking about our Earth and how to protect it.
Pickles was very aware of the changes in our world and how fast we use up our food, plants, water and land. He wanted to help everyone learn that we must protect our planet Earth.
Mike made up a cheer to teach children the about the 'Three R's' .
The cheer went -
Reduce, reuse, recycle
The Three R's are the key.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Try it and you will see!
If we all do our best.
We can win our quest!
Reduce, reuse, recycle
The Three R's are the key.

There is a smell,
Of Learning
Brains a burning
When all the children small
Have stories, oh, so tall!
When thinking thoughts so big,
They all start to jig!
Take the time, spend a dime,
Make a rhyme, feel sublime!

What is up with our pup?
His head is under the bed,
Did he see a cat in a hat,
Or a cow pulling a plow,
A moose drinking juice,
A hen using a pen,
A pig dancing a jig,
A tall wall fall on a ball?
What is up with our pup?

I tried to explain,
It really was a pain!
A polar bear followed me to school.
A lamb you know is against the rule!
At school it followed me inside,
A bear with a snow white hide.
A polar bear, not a normal beast,
So very rare, in Regina, at least!
Now imagine a polar bear,
That is truly rare!
Imagine when he came in,
The principal did not grin,
Could the bear be here to stay?
Come on, let’s go play!

Some migrate,
They move looking for food or a warmer place!
Some store,
They gather food and hide it away for winter days.
Some grow a coat,
They grow more hair or fur or feathers on their feet!
Some hibernate,
They eat and eat until it grows cold then they crawl into a den, a burrow, a home and sleep.
What do you do to prepare for winter?

Bats in the hall,
Playing ball.
Bats eating bugs
Out of mugs!
Bats wearing hats
Sitting on mats!
Bats with wings
Wearing rings.
Bats those mammals
Riding camels?
Bats in pants
Like to dance!
Hear them shriek
They are not meek!
Very brave
In a dark cave
Sleep all day
In an upside down way
Bats in the school,
Acting cool!

In positive terms, we say I can.
I can sound out some words.
I can sound out lots of words.
I can read some sight words.
I can read lots of sight words.
This week was a check up week.
And we can do many new things and
will continue to work to learn more.

A wee leprechaun was sitting by a lake,
1,2,3,4,5,6,7 no mistake,
He was counting his pile of gold.
The pieces of gold were safe in his hold.
Into the pack he counted once more,
1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and add 4
8, 9,10,11 pieces of gold for me!
He whispered “I’ll hide it in this tree.”
A green troll hid watching with a smile,
The leprechaun danced away with style.
The troll walked up to the tree, so bold!
He grabbed that little pack of gold!
He counted out 1,2,3
Put the pack back in the tree
When the wee leprechaun comes back
How many pieces of gold will there be in the pack?

Our field trip to Government House introduced our class to the origin of Christmas trees, Victorian decorations and gingerbread.
There was so much to see. Bright red poinsettias decorated the halls and rooms. There were so many Christmas trees we lost count at how many there were. The Christmas trees were decorated so beautifully and we even saw Santa's sleigh.

Festivals of lights,
Kindness, Generosity and Peace!
We are learning about the many different festivals of lights that are celebrated by Canadians today. The main aspect we will focus on is the lantern, lamp, candle or decorations with lights. We are discussing some special foods that people who celebrate the holiday eat the historic reason for the holiday and the fun of the presents that are part of these holidays. We are discussing and learning about Diwali and diyas, Ramadan and fanoos, Hanukkah and menorahs, Christmas trees/candles/lights and Kwanza and Kinaras.
Happiness, health to all who celebrate one of these festivals!

Animals in Winter
Dreamily white flakes floating down,
Covering our little town.
Last week geese were filling the sky.
This week the snow came, they said” goodbye.”
Mr. Bear curled in his den all snug.
There is no sign of any bug!
The rabbits hop white in white,
The squirrels sleep cuddles tight.
Children covered from head to toe,
Laugh and play in the snow!
Winter is here for a while today.
I wonder how long it will stay?

How can the owl fly at night?
Why doesn't he wait for morning light?

Wings strong carry him,
Claws catch, land on a limb!

Flying, furry bats hunting at night,
Sleeping in the morning light.
Using echolocation, not sight,
I wonder if they bite?
Mammals who fly, with wings so strong,
Or hang upside down to sleep all day long.
Wings so flexible that scoop up bugs,
Or give their furry babies hugs.

Soil, that's just dirt!
-------------------Fill a cup with soil,
Making a mess!
-------------------Add seeds one at a time,
OH Yeah,
-------------------Cover them up with more soil.
More mess.....
-------------------Add water,
Mud pies!!!!
-------------------Place in a warm sunny place,
Australia?
-------------------Let's try the window,
Now what?
-------------------We wait, we check, we water!
Boring?
-----------------We wait, we check, we water!
What's that?
-----------------The seed is starting to grow,
Oh! The seed is starting to grow!
-----------------We wait, we watch , we water!
Look at my seed!
------------------Your seed is a plant now.
WOW! I grew a plant, I don't know how!
------------------Seeds, dirt, water, sun!
They made a plant, I got one!
------------------Roots, stem, leaves and one day
Flowers?

No soccer to play.

What would I say
If a visitor came today
As the visitor looked around
Saw litter on the ground
Trash blowing in the wind
Against the fence is pinned
Cardboard, plastic altogether
How could I make this better?
What would I say
If a visitor came today
Asking with a wrinkled nose
While dancing on his toes
“What is that stinky smell?
Oh please, please do tell
I want to learn its name
My nose will never be the same!”
What would I say
If a visitor came today
Eyes burning with tears
Voice filled with fears
“I need to find my air tank
This air is really rank”
Oh dear me what could I say
If a visitor came today!

Scarlet macaws fly,
Silky sloths sigh.

Mighty jaguar surveys his domain!
Monkeys howls,

Butterflies silently, swooping.

Flowers in the trees divine.

The cow came to town
wearing a frown.
She wanted a hat,
What do you think of that?
The storekeepers gave her the look,
Maybe they thought she was a crook!
She waved her brand new credit card,
As she galloped by the mayor's front yard
With a giggle,
She did wiggle,
Through the department store,
Shopping for a lot more!
While she was there,
She wanted to be fair!
So she bought a wig,
For her friend pig.
For old nanny goat,
She bought a fancy coat.
For the six sheep,
She picked up a jeep.
For the old plow horse,
Sugar cubes, of course!
She drove off with this quip,
That was a wild shopping trip!

Happy New Year!
Have no fear, we are here!
Back to books,
Wide eyed looks!
Signing numbers, counting rocks
Hey! who belongs to these socks?
Writing words and stories, too.
Using pencils and paint of blue.
We have lots and lots to learn
See the energy we have to burn!
Happy New Year!

Where is my feathered friend Robin?
Where did she go? said Tom a sobbin'
Migrated you say,
How faraway?
Where is my furry friend Bear?
He always walks about without a care,
Sleeping you say,
Snoring away!
What happened to weasel?
Did he bump my easel?
His fur is so white,
Will he be alright?
Winter is coming to our place
All the animals are keeping pace.
Some fly away, some change colour, some hibernate,
Others gather, store food then snooze and wait!

With magnifying glass in hand
Detective D came to stand
In our classroom, she did to ask
"Will you help me with my task?"
We all looked around,
We didn't make a sound!
She stated flatly "Have you seen my pets?
I looked everywhere, haven't found them yet!"
We had no choice but to invite this one
To the gym, to the party, to join our fun!
There friendly Witch Wanda, took a chance,
Asking Detective D to come and dance!
We all did jump, stomp and hop to the side,
Detective D really knows how to glide,
All this fancy party romp took her off track
We certainly did not call her back.
Little spiders play the game in a nook,
It is really safe and fun to look!

My pumpkins are lost,
And not to the frost.
They are little and sweet,
Orange pumpkins so neat!
But they are gone!
They were on my lawn.
Did my pets return?
I want to learn
To whisk away
My pumpkins today!

Warm, white and kinda round,
Shell, waiting without a sound!
Watched by little eyes,
Hearing tiny sighs!
Moving, rocking, stop!
See the hole at the top?
Cracking,
Hatching!
Peeking out, yellow chick
Little fingers want to pick
Up this tiny bird.
Peeping sounds are heard!,
Fluffy, fussy, furry
Without a worry
Little chick, I see
Looking at me!
Thank-you, Mrs K for sharing the eggs and chicks with us!

Blue water, green grass,
Blue skies, white clouds and a yellow sun!
Pretty rainbows dance over gray rocks.

Take a pile of donated magazines,
Some that date back to 1982!
Scissors, glue, paper, and students
Add some facts, an idea or two!
Flip the pages, think a bit,
Search out the animals that fit.
The treasure is there for you,
Did you learn something new?
Thanks to our grade 4 Reading Buddies and to National Geographic for the wonderful pictures. I am not sure who donated the magazines but thanks, one thinking 9 year old was really amazed that many of the magazines were from the early 80's!

The Rhyming Farm
Wow said cow
How said sow
When Jen
The hen with the pen
Writes a note
To goat afloat on a boat
Pig in a wig
Dancing a jig
As duck in a truck
Runs out of luck
See sheep in the jeep
Land in a heap
Dog calls to frog
Get hog off the log
As farmer
The charmer
Runs in alarm
All around the farm!
Isn’t it fine
We can rhyme!

This time of year we hear people talk about caring for the less fortunate, helping each other, sharing with others and looking for world peace. As a class we work together to develop the values where we show that we care, we share, we respect and we are responsible. With these values, we are currently starting to work on a multicultural unit called "Festival of Lights." This unit will walk us through a few of the many world festivals of light. Please follow us on our journey, looking at these festivals to help us to share a little understanding of different culture and traditions.

On Wednesday Nov 25th, we traveled by bus to the Government House one of Regina's many historical sites. Government House is a museum displaying artifacts of Amédée Forget when he was Lieutenant Governor in the early 1900's. We visited the " Once Upon A Time Room" where we stepped back in time to experience hands-on play with toys of that era. A guide dressed in a historical costume gave us a tour of the house. As we moved room to room in the museum we were able to peek into Saskatchewan's and Canada's past, and into the lives of the province's Lieutenant Governors. We saw Christmas trees decorated with candy, popcorn strings and toys. Visiting the children's rooms we saw the tiny area where they spent their long cold winters studying, playing and sharing meals with the governess. Our trip ended with an activity that had each student decorate a gingerbread man. What a yummy ending!

The Great Pumpkin requested our help this week. Nancy the Naughty witch was upset with Harry the Spider because he accidentally ate her chocolate flies. Nancy was very upset! She decided she does not like spiders! They are not insects, they are DIFFERENT! Spiders have 8 legs and only 2 body parts so Nancy played a trick on the spiders in the pumpkin patch. And they went to pieces, so the Great Pumpkin gathered up all the legs and body parts and requested our help putting the spiders back together! So, check out our podcast! It was hard work but we did it.

On Monday I was a jaguar slinking
through the rainforest on soft quiet feet.
On Tuesday, I chuckled, teasing Tapir
In my brown, furry, howler monkey suit!
On Wednesday, I perched royally on my branch,
admiring my grand colored toucan beak.
On Thursday, as a butterfly I flitted landing
here and there on the many colored, scented blossoms.
On Friday, I wandered, a scientist searching the thick forest
when Kapok cradled me as sleep claimed my dreams.
Imagine!

How many things can you name that are yellow in color? The grade ones made a list; bananas, pears, yellow cheese, lions, corn, school buses, lemons, lemon-aid, lockers, pencils, markers, crayons, hay(straw), flowers, unflowers, flags, buzzing bees, yellow fish, baby ducks and sunshine!

We have been reading and enjoying many books written by Bill Martin, illustrated by Eric Carle. We really had fun with "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you hear?" and " Baby Bear, Baby Bear what do you see?" This week we have made our own stories to go with Bill Martin's "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" We have also read some of Eric Carle's books in our class and having fun with them. Check this week's blog for some of our favorites.

We are starting to practice reading and printing our numbers to 20, counting to 20 forwards and then backwards from 20 and matching the number word to the objects being counted. Have fun counting!

Hi there Grade Ones. This is where we are going to blog. That means we are going to write!
We have been talking about apples in class. Tell me what colour of apple you like to eat.
Parents: We hope you enjoy following our writing progress as we share our ideas. This blog provides us many opportunities to communicate with other classrooms during the year.
Please remember that writing is a developmental process. Not only are the children learning how to recognize the letters that represent the sounds, they are learning to type and add spaces between words and create sentences. The children are working with partners and sometimes they have more prompts than others. Please feel free to leave your child a comment on their own blog. When we know others are reading our beginning writing, it makes our work that much more important. We hope you enjoy our learning journey. Share our blog with friends and family and watch our ClusterMap grow!
