We are going on a field trip!

On the bus,
Out of the city,
Along a bumpy gravel road,
The bus stops.

We leave the bus as quietly as we can.
We walk to the edge,
We look down and out,
What do we see?

We see Wascana creek, hills, rocks, trees, sand,
We hear insects buzzing, birds chirping and Victoria pointing out the points of interest!

Stopped for a snack of Black Paper plant
Tasted like kelp!? Buffalo snot??

Quiet time is over, we are off on an adventure!
Down the path, passed some rocks
That the glaciers from Ice age dropped off,
Really?

Down to the pond!
Frogs, more frogs!
Mosquitoes, more mosquitoes!
Larve mosquito, dragon fly,
Dip, dip, splash!
Whoops, good thing the sun is warm,
Helps to dry out the shoes, pant legs, sleeves!

Lunch,
On the banks of the mighty Wascana!
No pirates today!
How boring!
Wait a track! Deer, coyote,
What else can I find?

Off we go to the Enchanted forest.
Storytime,
Listening,
Time to build fairy houses!
Let's get to work.

Off we go again.....
Up, up, up, up
In Spring,
Water washes down this path
Erosion!
Up, up, up, up!
The top!
Flat top,
Turn around, look down, look ...
See the sand bank where we had lunch?

Hungry again?
Let's take a walk.
See these salt and vinegar ...ants?
Really? Want a taste?

WOW!
What a great trip!
Thank-you Victoria!
Thank-you parent volunteers!

Back on the bus,
Ticks came along for the ride,
How many ticks went home with us?

No one knows for sure
But they are still visiting in our classroom!

Plants

Article posted May 25, 2013 at 06:00 AM GMT • comment • Reads 2034

Now what do I need?

I have a little seed,
To grow, what will it need?
A little cup I found,
It was tall and round,
I took a little dirt,
Made a mess on my shirt!

Dug a hole with wiggly fingers,
A little dirt on fingers lingers.
Buried that seed, added water.
Moved the cup where it was hotter!
Window in the sunlight!
So very, very bright!

It started with a little sprout,
A little, tiny plant no doubt!
A stem, a leaf,
Good grief!
My little seed is a plant.
And look, it has a pet ant!

I wonder?

Article posted May 18, 2013 at 06:54 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1060

Playground + rocks + kids = questions

What are the questions?
Imagine, look at the ground covered in rocks,
Some are red, white, dotted, black,
Some are several colors mashed together,
There are sharp, pointy rocks
There are smooth, round rocks,
There are little hands gathering rocks,
There are big eyes discovering rocks.

Then a little murmur......
Why?
Why?
Why?
What makes them different?
Why are they different?
How did this happen?
How come this one is dark inside and light outside?
Why is this rock all colors?
Why is this rock so ROUGH?
Why is this rock smoooooth?
Why, why, why, why, why?

I enjoy questions! Don't you?
The quest to find the answers
Take us on a journey of learning.
We read. We view.
We listen. We communicate.
We evaluate.
We experiment and we watch.
We explore and we learn.
I enjoy questions! Don't you?

Questions?

Article posted May 5, 2013 at 04:43 AM GMT • comment • Reads 904

Where do questions come from?

Questions come
From stories, picture books,
Nonfiction books, vocabulary words,
Posters, pictures, videos,
Maps and a globe, discussions,
Minds of children, ideas tumbling,
And then the questions?

What is this?
How does it work?
What is this animal called?
Is it cold or warm blooded?
What does it eat?
Where does it live?
And then the SEARCH begins.

But in the end the answers thoughtfully
considered cause MORE questions!

Our class enjoys asking questions!

Pickles Panda

Article posted April 25, 2013 at 05:03 PM GMT • comment • Reads 670

Pickles was a very special panda. He lived in a condo with his best friend Mike Monkey. They were members of the 'Three R's'. They went around to many places talking about our Earth and how to protect it.

Pickles was very aware of the changes in our world and how fast we use up our food, plants, water and land. He wanted to help everyone learn that we must protect our planet Earth.

Mike made up a cheer to teach children the about the 'Three R's' .

The cheer went -
Reduce, reuse, recycle
The Three R's are the key.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Try it and you will see!
If we all do our best.
We can win our quest!
Reduce, reuse, recycle
The Three R's are the key.

How much water does each container hold?

Water, containers and kids,
Small, smaller, smallest,
Big, bigger, biggest,
Measurement!

Too much water,
Overflows, spills and mops!

The water fits,
Blue flat tub,
Tall pink glass,
Different shapes hold the same water.

We can test,
We can organize,
We can measure!

Spring in Saskatchewan!

Article posted March 20, 2013 at 06:57 PM GMT • comment • Reads 752

Cold, cold, cold!
Ice, ice, icy!
Snow, snow, snowbanks,
Big and small,
Up to windows,
Over fences!

Cold, really cold, super cold!
Windy, snowy, frosty, slippery,
Yet the sun shines,
Minus 21!

Indoor recess,
Stay inside,
Staying warm,
No outdoor play!
First day of Spring 2013!

Time to drink hot chocolate!
