Courtney's Journey to Golden Gulch There were many obstacles on the way to California. I thought my family would never get there. The first time we tried to get to California, we left too early and our oxen died. There wasn’t enough grass for the oxen to eat. We had to walk back to the East Coast. Then, on our second try, we tried to go around Cape Horn. Our ship crashed, and we had to swim to land. We had to travel to the east coast again. For our third try, we went by overland travel and finally arrived in California. The trip was very expensive. It cost us one hundred thirty-six gold nuggets. We had many adventures along the way, and were very glad to get a claim once we reached California. I think we will earn money and lose money, but we will find gold in California.
