Oka In Perspective
If I were a part of the Mohawk Tribe during the time of the Oka Crisis, I would be very upset, for the white towns people who have already taken over a huge part of our native land would disrespect us enough to expand a golf course of theirs into one of our most sacred graveyards. They have been there since BC, and it is just not fair and disrespectful to them, when they have offered to share their facilities, goods, and land with the white people, but they are greedy and disrespectful enough to try and take over even more of their land, not to mention one of their most sacred graveyards, for a silly little golf course, just to entertain them.
If I were a part of the Mohawk Tribe during these times, I suppose that I would fight for my land, even give my life for our land, for the benefits of our generations to come, and our ancestors in the graveyard. I would also try and call the Prime Minister of Canada, and try and get him to stop this awful fight and help us, after all, if he is the Prime Minister of Canada, than they should already know to respect native lands, for they were here first, and share their lands with the white people. I’m sure he’d understand. Maybe he could put up proper barricades, and close the highways that are built in the middle of our land, and let them live in peace. If they live in peace, maybe the white, disrespectful, ignorant people will live in peace too. I hope there will be no more devastating fights like this, ever again.
In my opinion, I feel that this crisis was necessary, because the natives needed to fight for their land rights, but I also feel that the amount of violence in this crisis was not necessary. Three people were killed, and many jailed and injured, all over land. If you really think about it, even though the natives had the right to fight and keep their lands, all of this commotion and devastating crisis was all over some land. Really, that in my opinion is ridiculous, because this earth belongs to all of us, and even though treaties have been signed, and the land on this earth has been divided into countries, really, why fight over it, if we all ultimately should share it? It is terrible to think that all of this had happened over land, that ultimately doesn’t really belong to anybody, even if the governments say it is.
