Blood Diamonds:
Why They are, and why They Should Not be
The state of life in Africa is deplorable; and we think, those of us in the rest of the world, that same thing even more so than the people in Africa. People give what aid they can; with putting out their commercials and donating to various charities, however it is simply not enough. I think for some in Africa, us giving them the bare minimum that is required for a still far below adequate way of living, has simply brought light to the fact that they are richly deprived. It is as though a man described to one who was blind the beautiful sunset, in a vain attempt make him feel better. For the blind man, it only brings light to the fact that he is blind. Some I think in Africa said to themselves one day: “If no one else will help us, then we will help ourselves.”
Africa and the people in it need money, liberation, and organization. At the zenith of most people’s list-in this case it’s quite lamentable- is money; one must not forget however, that Africa is poor, and one of the easiest ways for somebody poor to get out of this slump is by taking that money by force. In the case of Africa however, nearly every country needs money, hence the conflict and the lack of organization.
To make up for this lacking the Africans became resourceful, in the sense that they made use of their own resources; mainly they took advantage of their having diamonds and the world’s coincidental lust for such. Numerous groups are mining diamonds using slaves, a tremendous illegality in Africa. Because of this misconduct, conflict has sprung up between the Government and the rebels who initiated the mining.
Contradictory to what some people might think, I believe it is necessary to aid Africa immensely and to the best of everyone’s ability now, so that Africa may stand by itself in later times, and help the countries in need of aid then. If we help Africa now he right way, then perhaps the y won’t need to help themselves the wrong way, so that one day, they might help others.
