Ipperwash and Caledonia compared to Oka Crisis

Article posted May 8, 2009 at 01:20 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 486

Throughout the history of Canada there have been many scenarios in which the Government has abused the Native Land rights. There are many land disputes in Canada; three main and important ones are the Oka Crisis, Ipperwash and Caledonia.
The Oka crisis was a land dispute in, the town of Oka just outside of Montreal, between the Mohawks and the town of Oka. The crisis started when the Mayor of Oka, Jean Ouellette, had announced that he would be expanding the local golf course from a 9 hole course to an 18 hole course. The Mohawks responded to his announcement by protesting. The protests couldn’t be stopped by the police so the government had to call in the Canadian army to deal with the issue. To defend their land the Mohawks had set up 12 barriers around their land. The army’s method in trying to get them to evacuate was using tear gas and smoke grenades. Their plan had back fired because the wind was blowing the gas back at them. After 78 days of conflict the crisis had ended with the Mohawks burning their weapons and Tobacco then surrendering. In the end the golf course was not extended and the Mohawks kept the land.
The Ipperwash Crisis was a dispute over land between the Ipperwash provincial park and the Ojibway tribe. Many Ojibway members gathered in the provincial park to assert their land claim. It quickly became a violent dispute between the Ojibway protesters and the Ontario Provincial Police. During the Ipperwash crisis one Ojibway tribes’ man was killed by the police. After the crisis had ended the land wasn’t given back until December 2007.
The Caledonia Crisis is a dispute over land between the six nations of the Grand River against the government. The government tried to take the land from the Natives in many areas of Ontario. Caledonia was one of those areas. All of the land was going to be bought up by Henco industries. Henco wanted to turn the land into a subdivision known as the Douglas Creek Estates. The crisis started when the people from the six nations of the Grand River put up tents and a large wooden building on the land known as the Douglas Creek Estates. Henco ordered for the people to leave the land. The sheriff delivered the order, but it was quickly burned by one of the six nations peoples. The crisis has not yet been resolved.
All of these three events have been disputes over land. In all three cases there has been an area of land that someone has wanted to take from the native groups. The natives stood up to them by protesting in similar and different ways. In two of the three events the natives have one but the third has not yet been resolved. All Native groups in Canada are facing troubles because of their rights. People don’t believe that the land belongs to the natives because they don’t have any official paperwork. The Natives were there way before them so the land should belong to them.

The Oka Crisis in Perspective

Article posted April 27, 2009 at 02:15 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 140

In Oka, a small town outside of Montreal there was a huge land dispute between two groups living in the area the Mohawks and the citizens of Oka. The Mohawks believed that the land was there own and that the citizens had no right to take it from them. The citizens believed that the land was public and no one owned the land. The land was going to be turned into a golf course to extend the 9 hole golf course.

The people were trying to reason with the government but they wouldn’t listen. It was on July 11th that the government sent soldiers to stop the protests. The native people were not happy about this they called in their own warriors. The Mohawks had set up barricades to protect them and guard their land. The Warriors said that they would only fire on the soldiers if fired upon.

The army stood out side of their land and monitored all actions at all times. They tried to create confusion by throwing smoke bombs. They also would deliver their food but it would be sabotaged.

After the crisis ended with the Mohawks surrendering and the police arresting them no one had really won.

Conflict Diamonds

Article posted April 21, 2009 at 01:06 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 141

Diamonds are created over millions of years under the earth’s surface. They are then later brought up to the surface by volcanoes. Diamonds are beautiful shiny stones, but they also cause people to die. Diamonds that are sold to fund conflicts are called “blood” or conflict diamonds. They are sold by rebel groups that are fighting internationally recognized governments
In some countries across the world people are dying because of the illegal trade of diamonds. One country that is affected by this is Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone in the late 1990s there were a group of African rebels that went by the name of the RUF (Revolutionary United Front). At the time the RUF were at war with the government, they used the trade of Conflict diamonds to fund their war. The RUF drove people out of their homes and forced them, if they met the requirements, to either work in their diamond mines or used them as soldiers. If they didn’t meet the requirements they would have their hands chopped off or if they were a woman they would have been raped.
We the people in the western world are really funding their war and prolonging the terror by buying diamonds from their country. When the rebels use the people to mine diamonds, these diamonds are brought to places such as Antwerp to be cut, sorted and arranged at a certain price. These cut clean diamonds are then sent out to countries across the world. People buy these diamonds as jewellery. The big diamond companies keep buying the diamonds and that means that the rebels are making more money to buy weapons.
The United Nations have tried to stop the illegal trade of conflict diamonds by introducing the Kimberly Process. The Kimberly is a certificate to show the spot of origin from where the diamond originally came from. At stores when you purchase a diamond you will receive a certificate assuring you that your diamond is conflict free. This means that it has not come from an area controlled by Rebel forces.
If the trade of conflict diamonds occurs it will help the countries in many ways. First of all the countries will no longer be suffering from the rebel groups because they will no longer be able to fund their wars and there will be peace. If the Rebel groups no longer control the country there is room for development.

Compare and Contrast: Blood Diamond and Chanda's Secrets

Article posted April 14, 2009 at 03:16 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 235

There are many similarities and there are many differences between the movie “Blood Diamond” and the book “Chanda’s” secrets. I will be comparing the two and finding those similarities and those differences.
The movie Blood Diamond is about a British Man who is involved in the illegal trade of conflict diamonds. It is because of these conflict diamonds that people are being killed every day, and that is why they are called “blood” diamonds. They are bought from poor African countries to be sold in developed countries for large amounts of money. Archer, the main character in this movie, has come to Sierra Leone to trade weapons to the rebels known as the R.U.F. These rebels are using child soldiers and diamonds to support them in their rebellion against Sierra Leone’s Government. Archer helps a man named Salomon find his family and escape from Sierra Leone. Salomon has found a large pink diamond while working in one of the R.U.F’s mines and he has hidden it so he can later go back and retrieve it. Archer helps him find the Diamond while they make their way through the corrupt streets of Serra Leone.
The novel Chanda’s Secrets is about a young girl living with her family in a country in Africa. She and her family face many hard times through their life. The Aids virus is spreading all over Africa, and Chanda is very much affected by it. People she knows, and even people she loves have been infected. They all live in shame, hiding their secrets because they don’t want to be avoided. Everyone avoids the people with Aids because they are afraid that they and their families will become infected. Chanda over comes this shame by admitting to the public that her mother has Aids.
Both the Movie and the book display all of the hardships in Africa. People in Africa are suffering from poverty and one way for them to make money to support their families is by becoming a prostitute. In both the movie and the book there are parts where someone is a prostitute. In Chanda’s Secrets Esther, Chanda’s best friend is a prostitute. In Blood Diamond Archer encounters a prostitute who wants for him to do business with her. Both Esther and the prostitute from Blood Diamond are struggling with issues related to money. Esther needs to raise money so she can afford for her brothers and sisters to come live with her again, and the movie prostitute was probably under a lot of pressure to make money for her family. Another similarity between the novel and the movie is cheap labour. In Blood Diamond Archer came to Africa to trade conflict Diamonds for money. In Chanda’s Secrets, both of her brothers and her father have been paid to work in an American mine so the Americans don’t have to pay them as much as they would have to pay in their own country.
Both the movie and the novel show how hard it is for people and families to live in Africa. They have many hardships that they must get over every day such as Aids, cheap labour, poverty, and death. The movie and the book both show how developed countries take advantage of the poor in Africa.

Symbolism

Article posted March 30, 2009 at 02:24 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 194

In The book Chanda’s secrets the author uses a special writing tool to hint certain scenarios that you find out later in the book. The method he uses is called symbolism. The definition of symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. I think this is a great way of telling a story because it builds up suspense. It builds up suspense because it makes you guess parts off the book that you have not reached. Sometimes your guesses can turn out to be completely true or sometimes can turn out to be completely wrong. One main example of when he uses symbolism in the novel is when Jonah is in the wagon and his sister drops him off at Chanda’s house. She drops him off because he has become very ill and it is too much of a hassle for her and her boyfriend to take care of him. Chanda realizes that he isn’t just sick he has AIDS. This makes Chanda worry because her mother had a baby with Jonah and she died. She starts to worry if her mother has AIDS as well. Another main example is when Chanda meets Esther in the internet cafe. Esther says that the manager gives her coupons so she can use the computer. She says he gives her the coupons because he likes her. He doesn’t really like her he likes what she does to him. Those are only a couple of the many times when the author uses symbolism.

Last week a serious issue ended up with the death of a Montreal Woman, Marie-Josée Fortin. While a Montreal couple was on a romantic get a way they went for a walk. During their walk they took a wrong turn, they couldn’t find their way back to the path. They left many SOS signs. A couple of days later a skier at the resort noticed the SOS signs. He had reported it to the Kicking Horse resort. The resort listened to the report but, they did not report it to the RMCP. The Death of Marie-Josée Fortin could of easily been prevented.

There is no excuse for the resorts inappropriate actions of not reporting the SOS signs to the Mounted Police; the resort didn’t even know that anyone was missing. Two more SOS signs had been found by a group of skiers why had the RCMP not started search? The resort told the police that the SOS signs were not fresh. A member of the police said that there are always rumors going around the small town that so and so is lost or so and so is trapped. The police members say that they are just rumors. Had they thought that this would have been another rumor? Is this why they didn’t react or start the search? The job of the RCMP is to protect and help people in the area. So if someone is lost in the woods it is their job to save them not to just sit back and wait for something to happen.

The only time when the SOS signals were replied to was when a private helicopter skiing company saw the fourth SOS and a man waving his arms frantically back and fourth. The helicopter pilot lowered and picked the man up. The man who had been picked up was Marie-Josée Fortin’s Husband.

This is completely ignorant on the fact that nothing was done by either the RCMP or the Kicking Horse Resort manager.

Michael Phelps and his Bong

Michael Phelps and His Bong

Recently Michael Phelps has made a bad decision that will force him to stop swimming for a couple months. The reason he can’t swim for a couple of months is not injury related, he decided to smoke some marijuana. Here are two completely different newspaper perspectives on the event.

According to “Associated Content” he just wanted to have a little fun when a “friend” took the picture of him. And that’s not the worst of it. The “friend sold the picture to publicity magazines and is now probably rich, but for Phelps he has a major loss of sponsors and three month suspension. Subway restaurants are disappointed in their athlete but as most Americans are willing to accept his apology. This article is from a left wing perspective saying that it’s not that big of a deal.

According to the “Washington Times” Michael Phelps made a dumb mistake. He has earned so much and kids look up to him it was a stupid idea to smoke marijuana. Many young swimmers look up to Michael Phelps because he is a swimming legend, but now they will all be disappointed when they see a photo of Michael Phelps holding a bong. This article is from a rightwing perspective.

Both writers have two different perspectives on the same story. It doesn’t mean that one is right or one is wrong it means that both writers see the event differently.

Review: Hot Rod

Article posted February 2, 2009 at 04:40 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 253

For this weeks blog I am going to write a review for the movie ‘Hot Rod”. “Hot Rod” is the story of Rod Kimble an amateur stuntman played by Andy Samberg. This movie is an extremely funny movie with high action stunts that are failed miserably. Rod is just a normal guy who has always wanted to be a stuntman after his father, who he thinks was the man who tested all of Evel Knievel stunts before he did to make sure they were safe. But when his step dad has only a couple of days left to live he decides to perform the ultimate jump to save him so he can beat him in a fair fight. Yesterday I watched this movie for the second time; it was one of the funniest movies I had ever seen even though it was my second time watching it. For any one who likes movies with funny jokes and funny accidents you will love Hot Rod.

NT or Northern

Article posted January 21, 2009 at 01:00 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 204

For my blogs this week I will be talking about my experience this week when visiting the two high schools ,Northern and North Toronto. About a week before the tours I was so sure that North Toronto would be the perfect school for me. During the first tour of North Toronto I didn’t think that there was anything special about this school. The second tour our school went on was of Northern. I had always thought that Northern wouldn’t be a good school because I had heard of a lot of bad things that had happened there, but during the tour I felt that it looked like a much better school. The kids seemed really happy. The teachers seemed really friendly, and the building was nice. During the tour, we saw a lot of cool classes like DT where you would make dragsters and planes and test them. The music program at Northern seemed really good as well. However, when it comes time for me to make my final decision I am leaning more towards NT. Even though Northern seemed a lot better, the academics at NT have a better reputation.

Mr. Khadr was sent to Syria and was tortured. He has always denied going anywhere near Afghanistan. In 2006 Canada cleared him from any link to terrorist actions. During Mr. Khadr’s interrogation Fuller showed him a photo of Mr. Arar and he was able to identify him.

Sick kids: Send or keep them home?
January 20, 2009
Tralee Pearce
There have always been bugs just waiting to pounce on young children. Now a group of representing Canadian pediatricians is for the first time explaining to parents, staff and doctors what they can do to prevent the spread of germs. The first step is to find out if they should be at school, at home, or visiting a physician. One reason for sending your child to school when sick is so that you don’t miss a day of work and become behind schedule.

New Years Resolutions

New Years Resolutions.
At the beginning of every year people in most cases adults make New Year resolutions. If you don’t know what a New Year resolution is it is a goal that someone would like to accomplish throughout the year, whether it is eating healthier or doing better in school. For me my New Year’s Resolutions are to increase my report card average from 78% to a percentage somewhere between 80-90%. My other New Year’s Resolution is to read just for fun. Before a couple of weeks ago I used to hate reading, the only time you would ever catch me reading is if it was for an assignment. Now I have tried to start reading more and every time I read I start to enjoy more and more. Those are my two New Year Resolutions. I will have to try hard if I want to increase my average, and I will have to spend less time on Facebook or watching T.V and more time reading.

Free Writing: In Twenty Years from Now...

Article posted January 12, 2009 at 12:59 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 120

In Twenty Years from Now...
In twenty years from now I will be a dentist living in Sydney Australia. There are many reasons why I want to be a dentist and many reasons why I would want to live in Australia. These are just a couple reasons.
Ever since I was young I would enjoy going to the dentist, it was a huge adventure for me. I loved all the cool machines such as the electric chair, and the vacuum that dries your mouth. Then in grade three I had to get a retainer, it was so painful. The only enjoyable part of it was when I had to clean both the top and bottom pieces. For most people it would be the worst part of having a retainer, but for me it was fun. Even though I don’t were my retainer anymore, I still on occasion clean them. Sometimes just for fun I brush and floss my teeth, I have no clue why but I just do. Every night I tell my younger brother to brush his teeth or he could get cavities or gingivitis.
I hate the cold winter days. That is why I want to live in Sydney Australia. In Australia there is still winter but it is 30c instead of -15c. Even though there are some fun things about winter such as tobogganing, snowball fights, skiing, snowboarding, and skating, other than those few activities winter is just miserable. And even if there is no snow in Australia you can still come to Canada during your summer and do all of those activities. In Australia you can do all of the fun summer activities all year long such as swimming, surfing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. Everywhere you go there are nice beaches, with huge waves for body surfing. Sometimes the waves are too big for swimming in but you can still relax and have fun on the beaches. Australia has allot of tropical animals such as kangaroos, snakes, and lizards. Canada doesn’t have that many neat animals. And if I lived in Australia long enough I would eventually have an Australian accent.
So If I were a dentist living in Australia I would be rich because most dentists become rich and would live in a Mansion in the Sydney harbour. Dentists get to create their own schedule by booking appointments so if I had no appointments on one day every week I would have three days off because I wouldn’t work on weekends. If I had three days off I would only have to work four days a week so would be able to spend more time with my family and not become a workaholic. These are only a couple of the many reasons why I would want to be a dentist and why I would want to live in Sydney Australia.

I Can't Wait Till Christmas Holidays

I Can’t Wait Till Christmas Holidays!

In the last couple of months we have been forced by our teachers to work hard and complete certain tasks. I am tired of all the work, I can’t wait to just sit down and relax for once, instead of stressing over work. This last week has been so far one of the worst weeks of my life. We had tons and tons of homework and assignments each night. These assignments had to completed before the break so there would be little homework over the break. Every night I would be forced to stay up late in order to complete my work. I was loosing out on sleep. On top of staying up late I have to wake up at 7:30 every morning if I wanted to arrive at school on time. During the holidays I will be able sleep in and about being late for anything. This is why I can’t wait for the Christmas holidays.

Confederation Song

In November our class was assigned an English and history project. This project included creating a song that explains Canada’s history and how some things made them want to unite. The project also involved creating a music video. It was a really fun project. My group decided that are song would be a confederation remix of the Beatles song “Revolution”. It was a great learning experience and a fun way to learn about Canada’s history. When we finally completed our lyrics and story board we started to film. While we were filming there were many errors and it required numerous tries. Some scenes we would sing to late and in other scenes we would sing out of tune or way too early. In our music video we had some scenes where we would be rocking out on fake instruments such as guitars, drums and a microphone. It was a really fun assignment.

Society Blog

The ideal society for me to live in is a capitalist society. This society would be ideal for me because there is no limit to how much or how little you make each year. In a communist society they believe everyone is equal and there should be no classes. It is unfair that there are no classes because if someone works all day every day they will still only make the same amount as someone who only works for 1-hour a day because the money is split evenly among the people. Capitalism means that you get what you earn so if you work all day every day than you would make a large sum of money, but if you only work an hour a day you will make a small sum of money. This would be fair because the more you work the more you make ,the less you work the less you make.

Migration Blog

If I were to migrate to anywhere in the world, I would migrate to Sydney, Australia. If I was to migrate to Australia it would be a voluntary move. This move would most likely be permanent for me because of some major push and pull factors. One of the major push factors is that Toronto is nice in the summer but in the winter the sky is grey, and the air is cold. Everything is covered in ice. I am sick and tired of living in Toronto during the cold winters. Australia is warm all year round and there is never ice, and the sky is always blue. Another push factor is that there are few nice beaches in Toronto. I love beaches, and water activities. Toronto only has a couple beaches. The beaches are not very nice beaches, and the water isn’t very clean. Australia has a large variety of ocean beaches all around the country. A major pull factor that would encourage me to migrate to Australia is the wide variety of wildlife. Toronto has very plain species of animals like squirrels, cats and dogs. Australia on the other hand has cats and dogs but they also have more exotic animals like lizards, snakes, sharks, and many other types of strange animals. I think Australia is the ideal place for me to live.

Halloween

Article posted November 3, 2008 at 12:12 AM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 208

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31st. In the 1900s the Irish brought over this tradition to North America. Halloween includes activities such as “trick or treating”, costume parties, haunted attractions, carving pumpkins, telling scary stories, and watching horror movies. Halloween is celebrated in many different countries including the United States, Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Japan, and the United Kingdom at different times. Halloween is originally an ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. The festival of Samhain is to celebrate the end of the harvest season. The ancient Gaels believed that October 31st was the day that the boundary between the living and the dead dissolved and the dead become dangerous and cause problems such as sickness or damaged crops. At the festival livestock and bones would be burned in a large bonfire and masks would be worn to mimic the evil spirits. A carved pumpkin lit by a candle is one of Halloweens most important symbols. On Halloween most modern people dress up as monsters or ghosts but other costumes could be based on television shows and not just horror.

Hello my name is Jack Black and I am here today to talk to you about keeping your mouth clean. That means brushing and flossing at least once a day. There are three major problems that could happen to your teeth if you don’t take care of them, gingivitis , cavities and bad breath.

The first major problem that could happen to your mouth if you don’t brush or floss is thatyou could get Gingivitis. Gingivitis is an irritation of the gums. It is usually caused by the build up of plaque in the small spaces between your teeth and gums. The bacteria between your teeth create foreign chemicals that cause inflammation of the gums and teeth. After a couple of years your teeth could start to fall out because of acute infection. Some times the infection can suddenly amplify and cause a disease called Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis also known as trench mouth. Some symptoms that may occur from Gingivitis are swollen gums, mouth sores, bright red or purple gums, shiny gums, swollen gums that emit pus, severe oral odor, gums that are painless, except when pressure is applied, gums that bleed easily, and gums that itch.

The second major problem that could happen to your mouth if you don’t brush or floss you could get cavities. Dental cavities are a disease that damages the tooth structure. The disease first affects the hard tissue of the teeth. These tissues start to break down and create holes in the teeth. If the cavity is not treated , it could lead to pain, tooth loss, and in some cases death.

The third major problem that could happen to your teeth if you don’t brush or floss is Halitosis. Halitosis is breath odor most commonly known as bad breath. It has a significant impact socially and personally. It is the third most common reason why people seek dental aid. 85-90% of Halitosis originates from the mouth, the intensity differs during the day. Foods like cheese, onions, garlic, and fish cause bad breath. Your mouth is inactive during the night so the odor is usually worst in the morning.

Do you want to hear the sound of a drill in your ear as the dentist drills away at your teeth? Do you want to have searing pain in your gums and teeth? Do you want to die from cavities? Do you want the dentist to rip out your teeth because of an infection? All of these problems can be cured by taking care of your teeth by brushing and flossing at least once a day.

Dear Sir
I am a concerned citizen of Canada and I feel threatened by the idea of the United States taking over all of North America. This makes me feel like the Americans have no respect for Canada. Canada will not fall easily because we have the support of the British, so if the Americans try to conquer Canada they will fail quickly. This article has scared my friends and family, and now they live in fear. I tell them each and every day that the Americans will not be able to take over all of North America .Americans believe in “manifest destiny” but that it is just a belief that they have. Now that we have the railway it will be easier for us to send our soldiers to defend our towns and cities. We also have the British navy in Halifax who will be very helpful and will supply soldiers. The Americans will never own all of North America because of those reasons, so for you to say in your newspaper that the Americans will one day own all of North America is just a rumor that scares us unnecessarily.
Sincerely, a concerned Canadian citizen.

The large sailboat tried to dock during the large thunderstorm. The sky was pitch black and the power was out. The ice-cold wind was blowing in our faces like a giant fan turned on full power. The rain was pouring down and was blowing horizontally , and it was almost impossible to see ten feet in front of you. We tried to use the radio but it wouldn’t work “ Get down!” yelled the captain as a large 10 foot wave came crashing into the boat and sent it spinning in circles. The boat was rocking like a baby’s cradle. The wires hummed in the wind. Our eyes were stinging from the salty water being splashed in our faces. We were all holding on for our lives as if we were hanging off a cliff. “Bang!” we heard a large roar echo through the harbour. Then we saw a large flash of light and felt the whole boat rattle. Some of the crew rushed up the stairs. The mast was broken. We had been hit by lightning.

Story Using Our Spelling Words

By James, Joseph, Claire & Dong

Once upon a time there was a man named Henry, he went to scuba school. It was his first class and he was feeling pretty confident in his new navy blue wetsuit. But just as his teacher told him about their first upcoming underwater challenge, all his confidence disappeared and it was replaced with anxiety. The scuba instructor had created a difficult challenge for his students. This challenge would teach the students teamwork, problem solving, and discipline. During the underwater challenge, one of his classmate’s oxygen tank was sabotaged by a specimen that looked like a great white shark. This was bad for business for the scuba school because it ruined their public image. This problem created distress among the scuba divers. Many people started to complain about the inadequate oxygen tanks. This made the school lose many founders meaning less money. More and more of the scuba students left and by the end of the year only half the people were left. This created less money for fundraising activities like the scuba fair.

The scuba instructor was shocked by the loss of income and tried to charge the remaining students double the price to earn more money and replace the oxygen tanks. The students weren’t very happy with this so they started to complain. The scuba instructor was overwhelmed with complaints so he decided to temporarily close down the scuba school until more students joined.

That night, the scuba instructor was brainstorming ideas on how he could get more students to join his school. The strategy he decided on was to borrow some money from the bank. He booked an appointment with the personal finance manager for the next day. The next day he went down to the bank and talked to the personal finance manager and told him why he needed to borrow some money. The man said to him " I would like to help you but because of your history of unpaid bills and overdue parking tickets I just can’t help you."

The scuba instructor was so disappointed. So he took a walk in the ravine to calm himself down. As he was walking down the pathway he saw Henry, one of the students from his scuba school. Henry was carrying a large harpoon, so the scuba instructor asked him why he was carrying that around with him? Henry quickly replied in an enthusiastic voice saying " that there was a $10,000 prize for who ever catches the giant great white shark that ate the mayors son! The scuba instructor cheered up and thought that he would be the one to catch the shark because of his knowledge of shark fishing from when he was younger. He asked Henry "would it would be possible for me to assist you on your journey to catch the giant shark". Henry immediately agreed, so both Henry and the scuba instructor went down to the harbour. At the harbour they decided that they would track and follow the shark by using sonar technology on Henry’s boat. A few hours later they picked up a signal that sounded like a shark , so they followed it. Fifteen minutes later they noticed that it wasn’t actually a shark that they had been following but just another boat. They came up beside the boat and asked the driver what he was doing he said that he was looking for a giant shark. Henry told him that they were also looking for a giant shark. The man told them that he wasn’t surprised because almost half the town is looking for the shark. Henry and the scuba instructor had a long discussion and they came to the conclusion that they would return later at night when there would be fewer people around.

That night around ten thirty they went back out .The water was calm and there was nobody in sight. As they were settling in they heard a noise coming from the sonar technology. It sounded like a shark. They followed the sound for a while and then cut the engine and threw some bloody meat overboard. They let the meat float for about ten minutes and then they saw a large object come to the surface about 20 yards off the boat. They were hoping it would be the shark, but it wasn’t. It was a seal. A couple of seconds after the seal came up, a sixteen-foot long great white shark came flying out of the water with the seal in its mouth. The seal was dead. The scuba instructor recognised the shark. It was the same one that sabotaged the oxygen tanks at the scuba school. Henry took a shot at the shark with the harpoon. He got it right in the tail, but it still tried to swim away. Then the scuba instructor took a second shot and it hit the shark right in the stomach .The shark started to bleed. Henry and the scuba instructor started to pull the shark in. By the time the got it on the boat it had already bled to death. The two men were celebrating. After their celebration, Henry started the motor and they started to head back to the harbour. When they arrived it was just around noon and the harbour was completely packed with other people getting ready to go out and catch the shark. When they tied Henry’s boat up to the dock everyone went silent as they watched the giant shark being raised onto a post by its tail. The local newspaper contacted the mayor to tell him the good news. The mayor rushed down to the harbour to congratulate Henry and the scuba instructor on catching the giant shark. The mayor gave them their reward of $10,000.Henry spent his share of the money on new parts for his boat, while the scuba instructor spent his share of the money on new oxygen tanks and advertising. A week later he was so happy to re-open his scuba school and he quickly gained new students. The giant shark had been his challenge, and catching it had saved his business.

The End

Grade 8 similarities and differences.

Article posted October 20, 2008 at 01:02 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 122

For my blog this week I will be talking about my experience as a grade 8 student. This is my second year at Deer Park and a lot of things have changed from the first year and the second year. This year the are a lot of similarities and there are allot of differences between the two years. In grade seven you hang around your friends from your previous school and then later in the year you hang around with your classmates. In grade 8 this is not what happens. Since you have been at the school for 1 or more years you are already familiar with the kids that have been in your class but now since the classes change up you are with a whole new bunch of kids. Now you start to hang out with those kids more than you do with your friends from your old school. Compared to grade 7 there is a lot more work that has to be done. The due dates are much closer to hand out dates then they were in grade 7. There is a lot more homework for each class you usually get one or more pieces of homework a day. Since in grade 8 you are the oldest in the school there are high expectations for everything you do. This year one of the hardest things is the class schedule. The classes end and start at weird times instead of the classes ending on the hour they end 10:36. Grade 8 is similar to grade 7 but it is also completely different.

Medieval Times

Article posted October 13, 2008 at 02:28 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 179

For my blog this week I am doing a review of medieval times. Medieval Times is a show in Toronto that lets you experience the life of a noble man in the medieval times. Once you enter the building and purchase your ticket you are assigned to a party that you will be cheering for in the tournament. The show starts of with a greeting from the king and his assistant. Then you separate from the group and go on your own tour around the area in places like the dungeon. Then you are called by the king to come to the arena. In the arena there are rows of seats and you have a bar counter in front of you. You sit in your assigned seats and wait for the server to come. The meal starts off with a bowl of soup. Everything has to be eaten with your hands. The second part of the meal is the chicken. Then there is the dessert. While you are enjoying your feast your attention is set at the center f the arena while the knights compete in a number of contests including jousting, duals, and challenges. After the challenges you look around in the gift shop. Everything in the Medieval time buildings are for sale.

I really enjoyed the Medieval times because it was a good adventure and really exiting during the fights. The food was also really good and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Medieval times and knights.

Camp Razlo

Article posted October 5, 2008 at 10:45 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 97

It was another hot summer day at camp Razlo. The sun was glimmering on the water. Children were playing, councilors were teaching and the chefs were preparing lunch for the campers. Just another ordinary day at camp. As usual George, Sam, and Tom were up to their no good plans. Yesterday they cover one of the toilet seats in extra strong glue, and the day before they covered one of the girls cabins in bear. But today they had an extra special plan, they were going to swim across the lake and stay one night over there. They were going to get some other guys to come with them. They would turn this adventure into a dare last one to not get scared wins the other persons dessert for the rest of the summer.

The night passed by quickly the five remaining boys were trapped on this island. The only way back is to swim but none of them want to because of that beast that attacked the other five. George said to the rest of them that they might be able to attract attention by starting a large fire. Three hours later the boating councilors saw the large fire and came closer to the island. As they approached they saw some kids who looked familiar. As the boat anchored near the beach the boys sprinted to him and told him about the monster. The councilor didn’t believe them at first but on the way back the monster jumped up over the boat. The councilor turned the engine on full power and went all the way back to camp. The councilors made the students call their parents. The parents were extremely angry at the camp. The next day the parents came down to the camp and picked up all their kids until there was nobody left at the camp. This was the end of camp Razlo. The monster stayed in the waters of camp Razlo. Later the camp lake became a waste drop off and the mnster died from toxic poisoning.

Compare and Contrast essay

"The Italian Stallion" was the nickname given to Sylvester Stallone. This actor, director, producer and screenwriter was born on July 6th, 1946 in New York City. Stallone first became a well known actor while starring in his original screenplay "Rocky" in 1976. This role started his career as a famous action movie star. The movie "Rocky" won the Academy award for best picture in 1976 . Stallone continued to play role of Rocky Balboa , the small time boxer from Philadelphia, in the Rocky sequels. Later in Stallone’s career he starred as John Rambo the American war veteran, the main character in "Rambo First Blood". This movie is also one of Stallones original screenplays. "Rambo" was a huge hit and three sequels were made including "Rambo First Blood Part Two" and "Rambo 3".In the 1990s Sylvester Stallone went from writing blockbuster films to a series of disappointing movies ,but that didn’t last for very long. Three years later Stallone starred in "Cliffhanger" about a mountain adventure. From the 1990s to 2002 Stallone starred in movies such as "Demolition Man" and "The Specialist". Recently in Stallone’s life he was caught and fined for drugs in an Australian airport. It was Human growth hormone that he said he needed to use to get his body in shape. He was still trying to be Rocky and Rambo even though he was 60 yrs old. Now Stallone gives his money to a charity for young children in 3rd world countries.

"The Austrian Oak" was the nickname of Arnold Schwarzenegger. This body builder, actor, business man, and politician was born on July 30, 1947 in Thal, Austria. Back in Austria , Arnold became a famous body builder at the age of 17. Arnold gave up sports like soccer and football and dedicated his time to the gym at the age of 14. At the age of 21 Arnold decided to come to America to pursue his acting dream. In America Arnold continued to body build. Soon later he obtained the title for the worlds strongest man, It was this title that got him into acting. In 1970 Arnold starred as the main character in "Hercules in New York". This film was considered one of the worst films ever made. The second film that Arnold had starred in was "The Long Goodbye. In that movie Arnold played a deaf, mute hitman for the mob. Arnold’s third movie was called "Stay Hungry" this movie won him the Golden Globe award for best male star. "Conan The Barbarian" was Arnold’s big break. The sequel was made and it was a flop. Later in Arnold’s life he starred in the Terminator series which was a big hit. The sequel to this movie did even better than the original. It was one of the highest-grossing films of the year 1991. Now Arnold is the 38th governor of California.

Both of these action movie heroes have a lot of similarities and a lot of differences. But both of them got into acting differently and they both got out of acting differently. Arnold Schwarzenegger got into acting because of his abnormally large muscles. Sylvester Stallone got into acting by writing his own original screenplays. Both of these actors have large muscles and that is what made them movie heroes. Arnold really is big at 6 ft 1.5 but Stallone is made to look bigger than his 5 ft 9 .Both have starred in Hollywood action blockbusters and Hollywood action flops . Stallone’s big Hollywood blockbuster was "Rocky" and his big Hollywood flop was "Rocky5". Arnold’s big Hollywood blockbuster was "Conan The Barbarian". His big flop was "Conan The Destroyer". Stallone and Schwarzenneger both had success playing the same characters in sequels . Arnold had more success with a wider variety of roles than Stallone. Arnold ended his acting career when he ran for and became the Governor of California. Stallone still hasn’t ended his acting career and now he is making sequels to his Rocky movies and his Rambo movies. Even though they are similar they have their differences.

In this essay I have compared Arnold Schwarzenneger and Sylvester Stallone. I have described each of them individually and I have compared the two Hollywood action stars. Since they are very similar I wonder if Arnold thinks about reviving the Terminator or if Stallone dreams about being the Governor of California.

Many people ask themselves who is the better action film star . Is it Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone? In this essay I will be comparing the careers of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. These actors have many things in common and many things different. For one thing they both were known by their nicknames.

Arnold Schwarzenegger .VS. Sylvester Stallone.

The world at War

For my blog I will be telling you about Call of Duty Five World at war. This game is a first person shooter created by Activision for the ps3, wii, PC, and X-box 360. This game is another world war two game but instead of the game-taking place in Europe it will take place in the eastern front of world war two. This game is scheduled to release on November 11th 2008. This new call of Duty game will include new weapons that have never been used before in previous Call of Duty games. One of the new weapons is the flame-thrower this weapon enables you to set fire to entire villages. Like Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare you will be able to call in back up during online and split-screen games. For example instead of calling in a helicopter after getting a five kill streak you will be able to call in a couple vicious attack dogs that you will control. This game includes a new feature that allows you to take control over vehicles. For example you can drive a tank around the city blowing up buildings. This game still has the fast pace online games that let you play with your friends around the world. So if you like previous Call of Duty games than you will love call of duty 5 world at war.

For my blog review I found a site that talks about the latest injuries for week three of the 2008 season. This NFL blog is written by John Clayton. The site is http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=3597926. It is all about the injured players in the NFL and their condition. As you scroll down the page it will list different teams and their injured players. For example, if I scrolled down to the New England Patriots it would talk about Laurence Maroney and his shoulder injury. It would also say when he got his injury, and if he will be playing in the next Patriots game. Once you have scrolled down to the team you want and you see the name of an injured player, you can also click on his name and it will take you to a new tab where it will show you his statistics. So if you like football and you want to see who is injured in week three of the 2008 NFL season then check out this blog. This information is useful if you are a fan of the NFL or are in a fantasy league.

You can en

9/11 Fact or Fiction.

By James N

I believe that the event of 9/11 is a fact and that terrorists did organize the attacks on the twin towers. Some people believe that it wasn'tt an act of terrorism but a conspiracy. I dont believe them , because why would George Bush sabotage the twin towers and kill thousands of his own people.

On September, 11, 2001 at 8:46am the north tower of the World Trade Center was struck by flight 11. Seventeen minutes later the south tower was struck by flight 175. The total number of deaths in both of the towers was 2,752 real people, and 6291 real people were injured. Conspiracy theorists say that the towers were strong and could sustain the crash of a plane. They say the only way it could have come down was if it had been detonated from the basement. This is not the true reason the towers fell .The reason they collapsed was because the planes burning jet fuels melted the steel in the buildings. This caused the top of the buildings to collapse down on to the bottom of the structures. The heat weakened the buildings causing them to fall to the ground.

On that same day at 9:37 am flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, killing 184 real people. Conspiracy theorists say it is impossible that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon because the hole was too small and not enough damage was done. They also say that there were no major parts of the plane inside the crash area. There were no major parts of the plane located inside the crash zone because the engine fuel would have turned the plane into ashes. It looked as if there was not enough damage done to the crash zone to have been hit by a plane, but this was because when the plane crashed the walls caved in and the roof collapsed.

On that same day at 10:03 am another plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This plane was supposed to have been crashed into the White House. This plane did not crash into the White House because passengers aboard the plane fought for control over the plane and managed to crash it in a field. The black box confirms this .The black box recorded the flight information and the recordings showed that there was struggle in the cockpit. There are also recordings of cell phone conversations about the plan from the plane .Conspiracy theorists say that cell phones dont work while in a moving plane. This is not true according to scientists .It is possible to get signal in a moving aircraft but the signal is not reliable.

It is easy to make up stories to confuse the truth, but the facts will always prove them wrong. In this case ,the facts prove the conspiracy theorists wrong and prove that it was an act of terrorism created by Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden. Nineteen hijackers from Al Qaeda attacked the United States. The United States did not attack itself.
