Happy Easter/Happy Passover

Unfortunately there is no Passover Hangman. Maybe we should create one? But as I've stated over and over, tradition is a good thing, and so, without any more a-do.....

6th grade assignment

Article posted March 18, 2013 at 08:20 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 6681

6th graders: time to use your EBSCO know-how.
Start researching a topic of your own choice or use one of the suggestions below.

Use Middle Search Plus.

Make sure you can find4- 5 pieces of information to save in your folder. If you can find related photos save them as well. Read the articles. Don't just find them and save them. You will have to produce a small report on your topic, with citations. We'll pick it up next week, today just work on finding articles in magazines, newspapers, whatever results you come up with.

TOPIC CHOICES:
Athletes Doping/Steriods
Genetically Modified Food
School Uniforms - Pros and Cons
Bottled Water
Algae bloom
Banning soda and sweet drinks
Banning Books
Obesity
Celebrity Activism
Violence in schools

Ideas for cyberbullying/bullying videos

7th graders! Your script submissions need a dose of individuality. Too many shared ideas. Too many similar phrases. Here are three websites (esp. the first one which contains a few videos) to help you hone some new ideas:

Ebsco Information Hunt

Article posted March 7, 2013 at 04:27 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 1086

I will be at a conference today.  While you fill out your Database Information Hunt remember these little hints, and put your name on top of your paper:

1. Results and Pages are different. Results is how many hits you have, and pages is how many pages there are. See if you can find that out yourselves.

2. When you leave Student Research Center and go into Biography, I ask you a question that might have no results. That's okay!

3. As Mrs. Tuttle may have already said, ignore the last question. Ebsco updated the database after I made this hunt. Sorry about that!

4. I want you to practice saving articles into folders, pictures int folders, making notes, looking at citations. CHOOSE A TOPIC OR PERSON THAT INTERESTS YOU and save some information on them. I'll look at it next week.

5. Be Good.

Viral Videos Makes Librarian sick!

Article posted January 14, 2013 at 05:54 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 4873

I appreciate a laugh and have a good sense of humor. I am willing to post videos - and remember, I have to watch them all before I post them - and some of you are trying to post totally inappropriate stuff.

My time is valuable and so I put forth two criteria for posting videos.

One is that they are less than two minutes. The second is that you have prescreened them before posting and so if they contain material that is sexual or words not used in polite company. I am going to protect you from making yourself look, well, just plain wrong.

The Stories We Tell

Article posted January 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 2198

Before we can write a story that someone will listen to, we need to  hear good examples of storytelling.

On the Related Links table on the left side, bottom, you will see links to StoryCorps and This I Believe.

Please listen to whatever stories appeal to you. Next week we will talk about how to craft an essay.

A Time to Mourn

Article posted December 16, 2012 at 12:30 AM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 7170

By now there is no one who hasn't heard about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Sometimes it helps to express your feelings through writing and communicating with others.

Although I am putting this under Assignments so we can share our thoughts and questions, and express ourselves and our feelings, this is not a mandatory assignment.
It's more a place to start healing by expressing our thoughts and reaching out, and having others reach out to us. That is so important right now.

The sentence that ends Dickens "A Christmas Carol"
seems so appropriate, especially now: "God bless us, every one!"

Please click on this link for an article in TweenTribune. That is the essential question asked at the end of this article. Do you think a bench would work for us? What would?
