Jeremy the Crow, and The Shrew are not main characters in the book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. However, the creators of the movie thought that they should play a big part in the movie.
Why do you think they did that?
Do you think it makes the movie more interesting?
If you were in charge, would you have done the same thing?

Today's blog assignment is to look at the following picture. Look at it carefully. Then, when you are ready, begin to write about something that the photograph has inspired. It can be a fictional story, a real story that happened to you, a poem, or a song. Good Luck and Have fun!

This week, students in both classes read the book The Secret Knowledge of Grownups. Students watched how the author used his creativity and some juicy details to create a great story.
Students then tried to use the author's style to create their own story. Some of the stories were published to the individual student blog pages. Students who did not get a chance to publish today will publish their stories on Monday.

This morning's class did a small writing activity to learn how to write "to persuade" by learning a little bit about Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955. We assumed the roles of people in Alabama in 1955, and made picket signs with some persuasive writing on it.

This week we have been discussing and exploring why people chose to migrate to Carroll County. While we we're talking about the large amounts of English, Irish, Scottish, and German immigrants, we thought it might be interesting to see where our ancestors came from. Below is a map pinpointing where the the ancestors of the children in the Morning class came from.

Today, we went through the writing process talking about our imaginary mystery objects. Then, we had to think of juicy sentences and words. Some volunteers got to share their work. Students had to guess what the objects were. Daily 5 went well today. Some students got to do Listen to Reading with our class' iPods.

Today, the afternoon class did an activity called The Mystery Science Box. Someone put on a blindfold, then one of us had to handle an item blindfolded. They had to use all of their senses except sight to describe the item using "juicy sentences"
By doing this we learned how to make our writing a lot more detailed and interesting.

Todday, we read a book call The Hickory Chair. In the book, we read about a character named Louis that was blind and had to use his blind sight to talk about things.
As a writing activity, we did The Mystery Science Box. We blindfolded kids in our class and used our senses to help us describe items in a box.
We learned to use good juicy words when we describe things.

Today, you need to first go to this site to practice your vocabulary for this week's story. I would like you to time yourself and get a score of 45 seconds or less. Then I would like you to begin or finish your story on Storybird using the three different types of Author's purpose that we have talked about before. If the stories turn out well, we will be posting them to our blog by the end of the week.

Today, students will have a choice whether to post a peice of their writing to their blog, or to write a reflection on how using Myst has changed the way they write.

My score was 500 out of a 1000. Go grab your parents or brothers and sisters and see if you can do better. Post your score in the comments section, and we'll see who is the biggest Thanksgiving expert.

Ben C. Has been working really hard on a story fo the past couple of nights, and this afternoon, I m pleased to announce that it is finally done. Congrats Ben, the story is great!
The Champion Team
One day there was a basketball team. The players on the team were: Benjamin C, Sean M, Matthew G, Jake D, Matt S, Rodney C, Cole M, Cole E and Matt St. They were the best team in their league. They were 11-0-0. Now they were at their next game. The team they were playing was pretty tough but they beat them 22-21. Sean made the winning foul shot, Matt G was laughing because Sean M only made a foul shot the whole season so far. Then came the tournament and they finally met their match because they were down 35-29. Matt S and Matt St got their game on and blocked all ten balls, shot more and finally they caught up big time because it was 33-35. Then Benjamin C rebounded the ball and there was 5 minutes on the clock and he made a three pointer for the winning shot. Benjamin C said three more games till the championship. Sean M said we’re 19-0-0 that’s great Matt G said I wouldn’t be saying that because you only made a foul shot so far this season. The next game Sean M was rocking because he made 4, 3 pointers. Then a tie game to win 22-22. Matt G rebounded the ball and shot a two pointer to win the game. Then Benjamin C said “two more games till the championship” and if we lose we all better be there so we can watch the game okay? The next game they were off their game because it was 32-20, then Rodney C made five more three pointers to win the game 62-35, he was rocking that game. Benjamin C said there was 1 more game till the championship and they were 21-0-0. The next game the other team was rocking at halftime because it was 45-20 so guess who got their game on, Sean M. He made 5 more three pointers to win the game. Benjamin C said that were going to the championship and they have cheerleaders. “Guys lets practice really hard because we’re playing the New York Spankies. The next day they practiced so long they weren’t by a clock and they practiced for 10 hours. On the championship day they were down 65-44 but then some how Sean M and Matt G got their game on and finally it was tied up 69-69. They shot but Rodney come out of no where and blocks it. Then Sean M gets it and passes the ball to Benjamin C who then passes to Matthew S who then passes to Jake and he slam dunks it to make it 72-69 with 5 seconds left. The other team gets it and tries to score but Cole M blocks it but he misses, then Cole E made it and the Boston Red Dragons won. Now Benjamin C is a real basketball player for the Boston Celtics, Sean M and Matt G are video game makers, Matt S, Matt St and Jake D are all wrestlers, Rodney C, Cole E and Cole M all are football players. Never forget that the Boston Red Dragons are the best in the league!!
The End

Example
I think I would like to live in the mountains. I like the way that there is snow on the tops of the mountains, but it is still warm down in the valleys. I also think it would be cool to be a rock climber because that is something they do for fun in the mountain region. The mountain region also has really neat looking animals, like big horn sheep and mountain lions.

So I stumbled across a website called Camroid this evening. I have to admit, this is pretty funny. If you have a webcam on your home computer, you should give it a try. Get your parents and brothers and sisters involved! Here is an example of my own camroid creation.
Happy creating everyone! Have a good weekend!

Now that testing is over, we had some time today to start our next project. This week we will be learning about the Regions of the United States. However, on the side, both classes are entering a contest on Google called Doodle4google. We'll be doing our writing pieces this week. Hopefully, we'll be submitting our entries on Wednesday of next week.
Also, JT made a video yesterday about Saint Patrick's Day. Hope you enjoy it!

Then, I want you to examine each site, think about things that they have in common, and things that make them different. THINK DEEP! Don't tell me things like, "They both are websites."
Next, complete a graphic organizer in Kidspiration to organize your thoughts. After that, you need to export your organizer to Word. Finally, you need to use copy and paste to put your article on your blog site.

Today the students worked with "main idea & supporting details" in a non-fiction article. We decided to do some small "research paragraphs" using some books from our media center. You can check out the morning class' work, as well as the afternoon class' work.

Ok, ok. I know it has been awhile since our last post. We'll blame it on the weather and the long weekends. Tonight we have two very exciting blog projects.
First, most students were able to read their own "Alliteration Poems" they created in class. The goal was to read "fluently." If you like what you hear and want to encourage any of the students, leave a comment on the blog post.
Second, The Cardinals in the pm class started a literature circle podcast today. Please click the buttons at the bottom of this post and check out what they have been doing with the book Mr. Popper's Penguins . They did a great job! If you are tech savy enough, you can even download it onto an mp3 player and take it with you!
Thats all for tonight. See you on Friday for published written work!

Currently, I am working on uploading this classroom's first podcast. Hopefully, it will be up on this site tonight (if I can figure it out).
I really hope it works because both the "Lukeskypiewaffles" and the "Bulldogs" did a great job reading their summary statements with fluency today, and I would like to show off the work.
Check back to the blog later to see if I was victorious!

This week the students were concentrating on their first major writing piece. All of us watched this video(below), and then had to use describing words to create detailed mental images for the reader. Students were also reminded that they had to "zoom in on the details", and "stick to the topic."
Click on the "class assignments" link over to the left to read some of the student's work. I'm sure they would love to read your comments!

Most students have their BCR's for today posted in their individual blog pages. Some students did not get a chance to finish and will be completing the assignment on Monday morning. Please check out some of your fellow classmates' writing and leave comments. Remember... if you feel like there is something they could improve in their writing, you need to say it in a nice and polite way. I will be approving all comments before they are posted.
Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!

New individual blog posts are up. Just click whether you are a morning or afternoon student, and then find your name.
If you are in the afternoon class, your posts will be up by 6:30pm today. My apologies to Jamie.
Ask your parents if they can see all the details that we talked about today in class in the picture painted by Bev Doolittle.

Happy Wednesday everyone. Today's geography challenge is a little more difficult.
What famous landmark am I standing in front of?
Can you tell me a state where you can find this landmark?
According to the story, which Tall Tale character made this landmark? How did he do it?
You can use this article if you need some help with answering the questions. Also, you can ask your parents for some help if you want to. Maybe they have even been to this place before!
See you tommorow for another assignment.

Happy Saturday everybody!
On Friday, we were able to walk to every third grade classroom and look at everyone's science projects on geographical features. The morning class thought it would be a good idea if some of them "reported" what they saw so they could post it here on the blog for everyone to see.
However, some of my reporters did not leave their names on their work, so I don't know who wrote each article. Maybe some of you can post a comment and let me know who wrote each article? Also, thanks to Ethan for taking some of the pictures. They look great!
Have a great weekend, and keep posting!

Hey everyone. Mr. S checking in. The students didn't have a chance to write anything for the day. So I'd give everyone a quick summary.
Today we tried to use our knowledge of fables and tall tales to determine what genre the English folk tale King o' the Cats is. After much discussion of what the story could be (either a fable or a tall tale), I don't think we came up with a solid answer.
If you are reading this right now, feel free to leave a comment on your opinion on King o' the Cats. Is it a fable or a tall tale? Why?

Today we learned about morals.A moral is a lesson. We made question cubes to use while we read. After that we rolled them after each page of our book and answered the question. We made skits about problems that people might of had and made a moral for it.

Unfortunately, I have some bad news. One student from our morning class spent a good amount of time giving a detailed account of our day. Though it contained quite a few spelling and punctuation errors (:)), it was accurate and entertaining.
My apologies go out to Ashley, because the file was erased accidentally and I neglected to tell her to save her work.
I will try my best to summarize for you
1) Talked about Fables and watched this video:
2) Worked on our own Tall Tale Stories
3) Presented geography projects.
Happy American Education Week Everyone!

The Missing Shoe...
Before Lesson:
A terrible thing happened yesterday. My lifelong friend and partner has gone missing. I last saw him at school at 4:00pm. His name is Bob. Bob is the color of a camel on the top. He is very short. He is able to fit on a adults foot. He weighs almost nothing. He is the shape of an oval. He is made of leather. He has the words “BED_STU” on the inside and outside of him. He does not have hair. He’s almost a foot long.
After lesson:
A terrible thing happened yesterday. My lifelong friend and partner has gone missing. I last saw him at school at 4:00pm. His name is Bob. Bob is the color of a camel on the top. He is a size twelve. He is able to fit on a adult's foot. He has little lines where he was sewn together. He is a slip on shoe. He is made of leather. He has the words “BED_STU” on the inside and outside of him. He has dark brown on the bottom of him. He’s almost a foot long.

Happy Birthday to Libby. Then we read Pecos Bill. Then we went into reading groups while the rest of us drew mental images of Pecos Bill. We are going to be working hard the next couple of days on writing our own tall tales to post on the blog. Recess is inside today because it is raining.
In the afternoon class, Most of us had our homework done. We also spent some time silent reading. We also read the story Pecos Bill. We learned what a tall tale needs to be called a tale tale. Julie says, "I enjoyed sitting around a circle reading tall tales because it was fun to sit as a class and read a story."

In the morning, Mrs. Barnes came in and taught us about ideas for stories. We read two Paul Bunyan stories and made a venn diagram. We used our Alphasmarts to answer a question for the two books of Paul Bunyan.
In the afternoon, we "zoomed" in on Ideas. We looked at funnels and telescopes and talked about what they have to do with Ideas. We learned about how tall tales can be different. We also wrote about things that we were experts on.

Today, both of Mr. Sandridge's classes looked at a classroom blog from Hong Kong. The class is called Grade 5 From Hong Kong .
In the Morning Class, Ashley thought that it was very neat that the kids in the Chinese class liked some of the same things that she did. She was very eager to comment on their posts. Jacob learned that the kids in China are on a 12 hour time difference!
In the Afternoon Class Julie thought it was cool that the students liked alot of the same things she did. Hanna thought it was really neat that the students can speak 2 languages. Caroline thought it was interesting that the kids in 5th grade are only 9 years old.
