The school year is almost over. I am ready for middle school but I am not ready to leave Elementary School. It is so weird, I feel like I was just watching my sister graduate from Elementary School. Also, it feels I was in school for two weeks, when it has been ten months. This year I think I achieved both goals because I can now read much harder books than before. I achieved this goal by going to extra reading. Extra reading is a place where you go and learn to read better and spell better too. I have also been reading every day. In the middle school, I would like my new goal to be making new friends, getting along with teachers and, getting better at studying. I think I could achieve my goals by, giving being nice to every one, handing in home work, and going in a quiet spot. I may like to try out for the soccer team. But I mostly try out for team the football team, because, I am already on a soccer team out side of school. I hope I can achieve my goal for next year.

All About Matter - Franklin Institute Presentation

On May 8th John came from the Franklin Institute Presentation. John was talking about all different forms of matter. The three different forms of matters are solid, liquid, and, gas. It was really interesting. He brought out this liquid that was called liquid nitrogen. This liquid was extremely cold.
Molecules are the smallest amount of matter you can have and still have properties of matter. Molecules relate to the forms of matter when they move fast they are gas, when they are not as fast they are liquid and if they are not vibrating they are solid.
One of the experiments that John did showed us was if you put a wall ball in the liquid nitrogen it will freeze/harden. Then if you throw it against a wall it will shatter. It was amazing.
Another experiment that he did, he used three volunteers from the audience. (sadly I was not one of them) The volunteers were Bianca, Kevin and Lauren. He handed Bianca and Kevin two objects. Kevin held a diamond with a hole in it with a stick attached to it and Bianca had a solid metal ball on a chain. They wanted to see if the ball could fit through the hole in the diamond. It didn’t. They then put the ball in the liquid nitrogen and after about 5 minutes Lauren took the ball out and it shrunk. They then tried to fit the ball through the hole again and it fit. I found this so interesting. It really kept my attention.
One other experiment was if you put liquid nitrogen in a Pringles potato chip canister, and put the lid on it, it would not hold the liquid because there is so much heat which cause the liquid nitrogen to heat up and turn into gas and expands it to pop the lid off. This was pretty cool how the cap came shooting off the canister.

On Wednesday, March 25, 2009 Mikey from the Franklin Institute traveling program, visited our school. He showed us a lot of cool experiments with energy. It was amazing. I learned so much from him. For all of these experiments, he chose someone from the audience to help him. One of the things he did was, he took a balloon and rubbed it against my friend’s head, then lifted the balloon slowly, and her hair was sticking up against the balloon. Then he took another person from the audience. He took a long string with a lot of pieces of wood attached to it. He flipped one of the wood pieces on his side of the string and all the other pieces of wood flipped to the other person’s side of the string and then back to him. Then they both flipped their sides of the string at the same time, when they hit in the middle it came back to each of them. After that he took two other balloons. One of them was a light yellow color and the other was a dark red. He took a lazar light, shinned it through both of the balloons and the red one popped because it was a darker color and the darker colors absorb light. For his last experiment, he took a golf ball on a string that hit a block of wood, which hit another golf ball that hit dominos, and then hit another golf ball, that hit a button that made a stick go on fire. He then took another stick, put the top of it on fire, and then he put it on the balloon and the balloon exploded and everyone screamed. It was hilarious. I hope I can see his experiments again.

ALL continents around the world are facing problems with the environment. There is so much pollution and not enough “GREEN” energy.
People are driving too much and not getting enough exercise. People should ride bikes, walk, ride scooters. Also, people are also not recycling enough. Rain forests are getting cut down for wood and paper and animals are losing their homes.
Polar bears are losing their homes, too. All the ice is melting and soon they will not have a home. If they loose their homes and environments, then they will become extinct.
All of this is happening because of humans- whether we are African, American, Asian or European, only we can save the planet.

Barack Obama’s Inauguration Speech

On Tuesday January 20th 2009, Barack Obama became the 44th president of the United States of America. This was even more important this time, because he was the first African American president. I think it was a little boring, but interesting. One thing President Obama said was, “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America.” I think this means; we all have to work together. Another thing he said in his speech was, “It doesn’t matter what color, race, or religion you are, we are all the same.” I thought it was really nice of him to say, because it is true. One thing that I think is amazing is that President Obama put his hand on the same bible as Abraham Lincoln. But the one difference is that Abraham put his hand on it in 1861 and Barack put his hand on it in 2009. Wow! What a big difference. He also spoke about energy efficiency and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I think wars are bad because a lot of people get injured and killed. Both my grandmothers lived thru World War II and had family members that were killed. I wish I could have been there in Washington DC during the Inauguration but at the same time, it could have been too claustrophobic. I think there were almost two million people there. And I also couldn’t be there because I was home sick with strep throat that day. At the end of the ceremony, President Obama’s seven year old daughter, Sasha, gave him “the thumbs up” after he took his oath of office. I thought it was cute for her to do that.

Hello. I am Discussion Director for the book, Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe. In addition to the discussion director, I am also the word wizard. Allen is the quotable quoter, Megan is the connector and Saikiran is the question maker.
In addition to our jobs, we also have to blog about parts of the book that we've enjoyed or found surprising. Please also look for examples of fantasy from the book. Fantasy is our reading group genre for this month.

Yay, I have a magic wand. I’ll use this thing to cast a spell on my classroom. But first, HOW DO YOU WORK THIS THING?”(!) Maybe you have to charge it or say a magic word like “Abracadabra”. It didn’t work when I said it, so I threw it to the ground and it started to glow. I guess it works now. I think. So now I tried saying a spell. Hmmm, what’s a good spell but nothing stupid. Oh, I know, I’ll use this wand to change the chairs into bean bags so we can be relaxed when we are learning. OK- what is another good spell… Maybe… no…. or….. nah…… Oh, now I really know. I will change the air that is in the school so kids and teachers or whoever is in the building can float instead of walking. Now, I have to think of one more spell. I know, we can have more clubs for after school instead of the mornings. It’s more fun in the afternoon then in the morning because you don’t have to wake up early to get to the clubs. I should know, because sometimes I am really tired in the mornings.
