HI families and Room 11!
This term we are going to be learning about 'DYNAMIC DISASTERS'
Earthquakes, floods, storms, tsunami, and volcanic eruptions, as well as non-natural hazards such as fires and pandemics, can be frightening because they strike at any time and often without warning. Understanding what causes these hazards and knowing what to do will help you to be better prepared when they happen.
Here in Room 11 we are going to be learning about how to be prepared for these natural and non-natural disaster.
See you on Monday for someDYNAMITE LEARNING!

We have two turtles in our class. Toffie is a girl and she is the largest turtle. Rocky is the boy and he is the smallest.
Our turtles love to eat frozen turtle food that contains fish and prawns.
They also love to eat live insects such as: Flys, dragonflys, praymantis', snails and spiders.
Our turtles also like to go for walks on sunny days. This helps to dry out their shell and give them some exercise.
To care for our turtles you must feed them once a day and take them for a walk at least twice a week.
There is a special way to pick turtles up. First you put your hand on their back so that your thumb is on one side and your pinky finger on the other. Hold the shell about half way down. Then as soon as you have picked the turtle up turn it on to its back so that you are holding him/her in the palm of your hand. This also stops the turtle from biting you.
You need to keep a close eye on the turtles when you take them for a walk as they like to wander away quickly.
This is how you clean out our turtle tank with care:
STEP 1. Take the turtles out of the tank and put them in the smaller tank.
STEP 2 . Turn the power off at the wall and then remove the heater from the tank and the light from
the top of the tank.
STEP 3. Get a team of about three people and bucket the water out of the tank.
STEP 4. Get a rag with no products on it and clean around the inside of the tank.
STEP 5. Fill buckets with fresh, warm water so that you can refill the tank. Make sure you fill the tank to 1cm underneath the ramps so that the turtles can get up onto the ramps.
STEP 6: Put the heater back into the water and then turn it on at the wall.
STEP 7. Put the turtles back into the water.
STEP 8. Put the glass lid back on and then put the light on top and turn it on at the wall.
NOTE: It is very important that you throughly wash your hands whenever you have been handeling the turtles or cleaning out the tank. Then make sure you sanitise your hands with our class hand sanitizer.
Congratulations! you have carefully and safely cared for our turtles by keeping their enviornment clean.

Yesterday we all had an exciting day down in Awakeri at top schools. We got up really early and drove for an hour along the coast. We arrived at 9am, just in time to reserve a spot for our school tent. Top schools is a competition for all year 5, 6, 7 & 8. They competed in 5 challenging team events. It was really exciting watching them work as a team. They all had amazing attitudes and encouraged each other.
The first team challenge that the year 5 & 6's did was the horizontal bungee. They had to have a tyre tube around their waste and then they had to pick up a ball and try and run with it on a slippery, wet surface. Once they got to the end they had to try and get it in the bucket.
It was a really hot day, so we had to make sure that we were drinking lots of water and wearing sun block.
All the learners had a really fun day! They were really tired by 3pm! Both teams from our school came 5th place. The teachers were very proud of them! Way to go top schools! You rock!
