This morning we will honour this day by lighting candles for peace at our assembly and singing a song composed by Montessori teacher Shelley Murley. Our Highglen Montessori voices will join with other Montessori school students all around the world as our commitment to peace.
To listen to the song yourself, go to:

Today we watched a short video suggested to us by Mrs. Scott. Several well known entertainers/actors created it to show their new president, Barack Obama, that they pledged to help him with his dream of people working together to make their country a better place.
We talked about making pledges to help each other in our classroom, at school, at home, in our community and country. Watch the video...think a little...talk to friends and family, then write your pledge on your blog or make a comment to our's.
What's your pledge?

Today I received this message from a friend inviting me to make a personal commitment in honour of Peace One Day:
Hello friends,
Today, Sunday is the UN sanctioned international Peace Day, and we want
to help spread peace! There is a website of information, and for anyone
wanting to work towards peace in the world one day, it gives suggestions
about how to be at peace with others today. They have a virtual "wall"
where you can make statements of peace, or share how you will spread
peace on Sept.21st.
Welcome to the Peace One Day website! In 1999 filmmaker Jeremy Gilley
decided to try and establish the first ever Day of Peace with a fixed
calendar date. In September 2001 the Member States of the United Nations
unanimously adopted the first-ever annual day of global ceasefire and
non-violence—Peace Day, 21 September.
Peace One Day now works to create global awareness of the day and
manifest life-saving activity and individual action throughout the world
on September 21 each year.
The day is working. Lives are being saved and individuals are making
commitments.
Today, our family is going to work harder at being kind to each other, and everyone who's paths we cross. We are going to go to the Ancient Forest with friends and be grateful we live where we do - in a peaceful country roaming freely.”
What can you do to live more peacefully? Perhaps your family might like to post a thought on the Peace One Day Virtual Wall.
This week at school we will talk about our own personal plans for peace as we continue to create our classroom beliefs. We will include our ideas in a Weekly Response assignment and begin a Peace Wall. We will invite our Highglen school community to add to it. Watch for the results at the Open House this Thursday evening (Sept. 25th).

It has been an exciting two days at school! Yesterday our classes gathered outside to release our Painted Lady butterflies. We have been observing them in the pavillions in our library as the caterpillars became chrysalids in their pupa phase then emerged as adults. We got to see them drink by uncoiling a long proboscis into a small lid of sugar water. We wish them well and hope they find great places to lay their eggs.
There was also a lot of excitement outside today as tree planters from all over this area came here to celebrate the planting of the 6 billionth tree in B.C. Many new pines were planted on our school grounds to replace the ones that had died from the Mountain Pine Beetle infestation. We hope our school population and visitors to our grounds will help keep these brand new seedlings growing well until they are a sturdy forest again! Happy World Environment Day!

Below is the Video ("Fragile Planet" music by Sting) that Mr. Paterson showed at today's assembly. Division 7, in observance of this week's World Environment Day, please consider how you (and your family...talk at home!) might reduce your "carbon footprint" on the planet. Record your thoughts as an article for your blog page.

Several eager students have written articles and comments that are awaiting approval. I'm presently trying to work out a glitch to do with our initials. As soon as it is resolved I'll be able to work through the items pending and we'll be back on track.
In the meantime, students have printed a copy of their avatar for our classroom door. We're having fun guessing who's who.
Parents...ask your children about the amazing bagpipe presentation that we enjoyed at today's assembly! Thank-you to Mrs. P for arranging this for us!

Congratulations students! You all did a great job of choosing templates and creating avatars for your first blogs! I'll work with you tomorrow on the approval process if you don't see your's yet. I figured out how to find an amazing picture of the sea turtles we all love and included the link to the CCC. You and your families can read about our adopted satellite-tracked turtle Zoe and look at the animated map of her travels.
Have fun showing off your work so far!
We're all so thankful to Mrs.Scott and her students for their help getting us started!

This is my first blog attempt. I've started with a peace symbol template as I'm all about it. I'll be looking next for a sea turtle image next. That's our first task today...to learn how to customize our blogs a bit. I'm sure the look of them will evolve as we learn more.
