Your first blog post in 2009

Welcome to all SMLS5 students! This is a new project for you to work on during the 2009-2010 school year. It's called BLOGGING. Blog is short for weblog, or keeping a log on the web, or World Wide Web (WWW). According to Wikipedia, it's a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.

What I want you to do at first is just to "play with" this Blogmeister blog site. You have your own assigned space, shared with your numeric counterpart in the other fifth grade class. Both of you will make entries in your shared space and simply sign your blog entries with your first name. There will be more specific assignments later on, but for now, just write a Welcome entry, inviting your readers to read your blog and comment on it from time to time. Be careful to avoid being too personal, but feel free to talk about what we do in fifth grade at our school, what we're learning, and things like that to start with. Most of all, have fun!

Weather Hams News Articles

Article posted January 4, 2009 at 11:49 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 2098

For our second blog writing project we wrote news articles about our weather hams project. We spent 6 weeks in the Fall meeting twice weekly with amateur radio operators around the world, collecting weather data, culminating with a session just devoted to getting acquainted with our volunteer weather watchers. Ham radio operators love to talk, and it turns out they love to work with children, too! Read all about this project from the students' point of view in our weather hams news articles.

Island Stories

Article posted December 9, 2008 at 11:38 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 741

Welcome to our first blog entries of 2008-2009! I have a brand new class, and we've recently finished our touch typing course for this year. Now that we know how to touch type, we're ready to begin our 2008-2009 blogging season. We're hoping you'll come back regularly to see what we've written lately. We love to hear from you via comments right here on the blog site, and/or email. Our class has been working on island stories for a while now. We began this project by reading Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. Then, after much discussion of this story, we wrote our own island stories. Our first blog entries of the 2008-2009 school year begin with these stories. We hope you enjoy them!

What You See Is What You Get!

Article posted June 4, 2008 at 05:40 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 1108

Thank you to David Warlick for making our blog even more fun to use. Recently, he announced that he had found a way to add a wysiwyg editor -- what you see is what you get. I'm typing in this editor right now and will try to demonstrate what it can do to my typed text. Next year's fifth graders should appreciate what we have here! Thank you to Mark, a third grade teacher and blogger, for sharing this with me!

You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

Article posted May 31, 2008 at 10:15 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 335

Well, it’s time to say goodbye for 2007-2008. Our little experiment in writing and sharing has been a great success. We still have a lot to learn -- students AND teacher -- but we’ve also learned a lot. The students say it best on their personal blogs, so I hope you’ll read them here.

Hello to all the new fifth graders! You’ll want to read these blog entries, too, because each student has said “hello” to you. Welcome to fifth grade. I’m writing this on the first day of summer. Soon, it’ll be official and you’ll be a fifth grader. Enjoy your summer! I’m looking forward to seeing you in fifth grade in August.

To all of our readers for 2007-2008, thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll be back in a couple months for our next round of writing and sharing!

Assignment 3 - Jonah and Second Chances

Article posted April 21, 2008 at 09:30 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 999

Now that we've read the story of Jonah (Jonah 1-4), I have a couple of questions to get you thinking. If you need to, click on the link for Jonah 1-4 and re-read the story.

For our readers, I encourage you to read this story, too, before you read our student blog posts.

2 Questions to blog about:

1. What evidence do you see in Jonah 1-4 that God is a God of "second chances"?

2. When has God given you "two chances"? Give an example.

It's Been A While . . .

Article posted April 16, 2008 at 06:00 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 113

I see it's been over a week since I last posted to our blog. Since I've been giving about one blog writing assignment a week to my students, I suppose I should try to maintain the same kind of schedule.

Last weekend I had wanted to edit and upload a few more of our fourth graders' recent podcasts (see them on our podcast page at smls5.com), but I had another podcasting deadline to meet. Next week I head to Minneapolis with several of our Saint Michael staff for a national convention of Lutheran educators. Somehow, through my online network of tech-oriented educators, I ended up as a presenter of a technology mini-session. I chose as my topic: podcasting in the classroom.

It's been about 1 year since I started creating podcasts with my students. We began last Spring and got in a good 2 months before the 2006-2007 school year ended. Now, we've been at it for all of 2007-2008, and this year will mark the first full school year of capturing students' voices and, sometimes, their visible work as podcasts. As you know, only recently have we added a regular blog contribution.

Well, I'm mentioning this because, as I chose a few sample podcasts to highlight in my little mini-session, I noticed how we had progressed since last April (2007). The other thing I noticed was that the students have attacked these projects with real enthusiasm and excitement. Finally, I noticed how well student voices communicate the ideas that have been written down. There's something warm and inviting about the human voice when you really listen to what's being said. Podcasts have a way of making you do that.

If you haven't taken the time to listen to several podcasts in a single sitting, try it sometime. These children have some very interesting things to say!

Nice Work!

Article posted April 7, 2008 at 06:12 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 135

Today we had our first mad rush to publish on our blog. Good job, all who got their first entry in today! I made a few minor edits, commas, spaces, and minor things like that. I handed a few back for you to fix before I publish them, but mostly you all did a GREAT job!

Now, feel free to move on to the second assignment posted on the lower-right-hand corner under "Assignments".

Have fun!

I think we're ready -- Let's Give It a Try!

Article posted March 6, 2008 at 02:54 PM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 219

OK class. You know me! I love to try new things. I think you'll like this one. Long story short, it's a writing assignment. I know, I know! Some of you like to write, some don't. This one is different, though. Whether you start on your Neo or just go straight to the computer, you can publish your work straight to the web.

One catch! Your writing comes straight to my email first. If everything looks OK, I just click on "publish" and you're there. There's a good reason for this extra step: SAFETY.

Here's a good way to look at it:

Students
Are
First with an
Editorial
Task. The final
Yes to Publishing belongs to Mr. Schwan because he's responsible for this website.

I want to make sure everything you say online keeps you safe. Also, if you make a really embarrassing mistake on your article I want to have a chance to tell you before your article goes online. You'll appreciate that if you ever make a big blunder. Hey, I'd want you to catch my mistakes, too!

So, now that you know the groundrules, let's get started. Click on the Teacher Assignments link in the bottom right corner, the 3/3 assignment called Your first blog post to get started.

Have fun!
Mr. Schwan
