During the USE IT stage of our Future Learning, I created a report about Lions.
Enjoy!
Lions: The King of the Savannah.
Lions come from the big cat family and can be found in the wild or in captivity. They are another species of endangered animals. They are also of the ‘Pantheria Family’: Panthera Leo.
Home
Most lions are found in the lush plains of Africa, in the Savannah, but some small population of Asiatic Lions are still in the Gir forest of India. In Africa, it lives among Zebra’s gazelles, warthogs and other animals, sharing the same land of trees, rocks and grassland.
Known for strength
Dubbed as “King of the Savannah” for its immense strength, this mammal has some hairy features. On its head it has a golden shaggy mane which represents its strength and power, and a pair of day and night hunting eyes which slant to keep out too much light, and at night widen out to let in any light.
Fact Box
2 metres in length
90cm in height
160-180 kg in weight
50 mph speed
Impressive!
Behaviour
The pride will usually wake and go hunting but most of the hunting is done by the Lioness. Later the lion will later take his share in food. Then for most of the day he will sleep and lie in shade for around 20 hours. He may later hunt at dusk.
Cubs
The cubs will be blind for two weeks and feed on mother’s milk before eating meat at 2 months. They will be hidden until they are big and strong enough to join the pride, the group of Lions. A pride has around 10-35 lions.
“Dinnertime!”
Lions will eat almost anything they can find from wildebeest to Zebras, Buffalo to Gazelles, even garbage and humans. Human attacks are rare, but once when a company was creating a railway in the Nigeria area, an attack of lions dragging away victims was dubbed the ‘most horrific’ attack ever.
The lion will eat daily 7kg worth of meat, while the lioness will eat 5kg’s.
Life Cycle
Female gives birth.
2-4 cubs are born. Only ½ will survive to adulthood
18 month old ‘sub-adults’-cubs father fights against the sub-adults to not lose his territory.
The pride will move if they have lost their territory
Otherwise, they will bring up the cubs and cubs will become adults
Adults mate
How are we wiping them out?
We have people called poachers and hunters hunting lions for fur, skin and meat. This habit is common with animals getting wiped out.
How are we helping?
We are helping by keeping lions in zoos and reserves (captivity) until the lion population has risen and they are free to go into the wild. By that we are keeping them away from hunters.
Captivity
The zoos and wildlife reserves are called areas of ‘Captivity’. Captivity is when an animal is kept in enclosed spaces, usually designed to keep the animal safe. The artificial habitat will be designed to be as close to the natural habitat.
It is vital the lion does not lose its ability to hunt and fight as it may need to do so when it is released.
Summary
The lion is a symbol of strength and love, and it is a well known animal of our world. It needs to be protected.
Glossary
Captivity- captured and placed in an area of captivity
Endangered- in danger of being wiped out
Natural- something that happens naturally is when it happens according to nature
Pride- a group of lions

Kaira and I have been writing a Pick a Path called Cabin 502 together and separatly and a Narrative to try different genres of writing. The following is a (present tense) excerpt of a part I wrote in the Pick a Path:
The ship is a ominous, shiny, silver cruiser with a beautiful flower covered deck. A great promenade deck is held up with thick green chains. the ship itself looks like an enormously conical pine tree floating down a river with all its branches still on. You and Bob look for your numbered cabin 502, but it doesn't seem to appear.
"Excuse me sir, do you know where cabin 502 is?"
The purser turns white as a sheet of printing paper, and points at a X marked door. He runs away in an instant.
"Whoa man! Get back here!" cries Bob.
You sigh and stare at the foaming water.

The following is the Rubric that Kaira, Mrs. Watchhorn and I discussed and co-constructed for our pick a path writing.
