This is a trial to see if we can still upload stuff. We are going to try to re-establish our blog for 2012 because we have some amazing childrens work worthy of publishing.

Book week was great because some of the mums came to read us stories. We talked about our favourite book characters and dressed up as one on the last day of term.
Look at us!

When the rain pours down, we are lucky enough to get a huge puddle outside our classroom. The puddle is sooooo large we call it Lake Room 23.
There is no good reason to waste a good, big puddle so we decided to bring extra clothes and have a jolly good play in it. It was a bit cold though...
.....
We did have such a lot of fun.

We read a story where the children stay in a lighthouse, climbed 100 stairs to the bedroom where they slept in a hammock!!!
We wondered what it would be like to sleep in a hammock...sooooo... Emilia kindly brought hers along. We ended up with 2 hammocks side by side thanks to Jack. We found out how to get in and out without crashing to the floor. Fun, fun, fun.

We found the thought of having to run a long way then ride a bike and then run some more, quite scary... sooooo... we decided to have a close look at the route we would have to take.
School, Larcy road, Niel Hunt Park, School...not so scary after all But oh what a long way!!!
A plan was needed so we made one and practised it.
1. Run as far as you can then stop and walk.
2. Walk until you can start to talk, then
start to run again.
3. If you get really tired...then...crawl BUT as soon as you can talk and laugh...RUN,RUN,RUN!
Well, we all managed to finish!!! and we did enjoy the ice-block at the end.
Here is what we did before enjoying our ice-block.

We read a story called Peach Boy.
The little, old woman in the story did her washing in the river. We found this quite amazing as washing in our homes is done in the good old washing machine.
We wondered what it would be like to do our washing in a river sooooooo we decided to give it a go !!!
We all got a t-shirt and wore it for 2 days making sure it was nice and dirty, and... oh my goodness... they were dirty.
We took a photo of eachother, drew a map showing the main dirt spots so we could measure how clean our t-shirts would be after washing in the schools Waitawa Stream......
...then set off to do the deed.
When we were too cold to carry on we squeezed out as much water as possible and hung them on the fence to dry. Our school didn't look too good from the road and one of the mums asked if we were taking in washing to make money!!!
Plan B.
.........
..................
Enjoy our thoughts about Plan A and B so far.
Plan C.
.....................
Here are some of our thoughts.

We shared what we already knew about keeping ourselves safe when around fire. We also found that we knew what to do to keep ourselves safe, if our house had a fire!
1. We checked our smoke alarms.
2. We practised Get down. get low. Get out....FAST!!!
.......
3. We worked out our escape plans.
4. We discussed the importance of having a safe meeting place.
5. We practised saying our street nimber and name, and our suburb and city. (although we struggled with the terms...'suburb' and 'city' )

Danyon brought an Ostrich egg shell to school.
"It's a Moa egg!!!" shouted the kids. "Our big moa has layed an egg!"
"We could make some baby moa" suggested Danyon.
"What a good idea" agreed Miss J.
"Let's do it".

Danyon brought another ostrich egg to school. "It's a real egg" he said. "We got it from an ostrich farm."
Danyons told us they were good to eat .....soooooooo.... we decided to cook it.
We wrote stories about our thoughts aaaaand drew some pictures to support our writing.
All of us tasted the ostrich egg. Some of us enjoyed it and others didn't.

"You are now Moa experts" laughed Miss J. "See if you can...
1. overlap your shapes
2. make your closer things bigger.
3. show texture by using layers of pastel
4. have a horizon and a background.
5. clean the pastel off the tables when you have finished.
Good luck my little artists.

This is a test with an unfinished piece of work to see if Power Point is a good tool to share long, interesting well illustrated bits of childrens writing.
... Well as it turned out. Yes, it is a good tool.
Here goes !!!!

Alot of the stories we have been reading have the most wonderful illustrations - creatures and characters represented in 2 dimension with the most glorious sense of texture suggested in layers of tone and colour. Perfect for young artists to experiment with.
Let's have a go at putting the spikes on our hedgehogs by using layers of pastel suggested Miss J. Lots of short heavy strokes and remember to use all the colours you can see on the hedgehogs spines when you do your own.
"We'll need to do some ground for them to walk on" said Xavier "or they"ll be floating."
"Yeah" said Taare "I'll get the dye so we can do the sky too" "And we need some paper for the floor so we don't get dye on it." said Alysha "I'll get it"
"Go for it " said Miss J. "Go for it"
......
We found "Smelly Bear" to be another of those exquisite books not only with a great story line but those 2D illustrations and layered tone and colour to suggest texture once again.
Wednesday was 'special visitors' day. Some of us had our Grandparents visit and others had our aunts, uncles, older brothers and sisters, aaaand mums, and dads visit. What a busy, happy day.
"What a great chance to practise recognising and drawing the shapes inside Smelly Bears" said Miss J. Lots of caring help on tap sooooo thats what we did.
1. Can we draw bears walking
2. What about climbing.
3. How about sitting.
4. Not to mention overlapped.
Enjoy our album. Thank you for coming and for giving us the gift of your time. We hope you enjoy looking at our finished 'Smelly' and 'Fluffy' bears.
Thursday and Friday.
"Choose the sketches you like best and use these to draw your own bears." suggested Miss J.
1. Maybe some will be sitting.
2. Perhaps some will be climbing.
3. An adventurous person may have overlapping.
aaaaaand..."Don't forget the ground so the bears not floating" suggested Xavier.....

Unfortunately two of our class members were involved in a head on crash in the playground. We are learning to use 'Photo Story' so we can share our ideas in a different way... soooooo... we decided to do a reenactment.
What do you think of the advice at the end. Click the comment box and let us know.

We read the story The Potato People, and decided to make our own creatures.
"They have so many bits sticking out of them" said Miss J. doubtfully. " Do you think they will still grow when you plant them?"
"We'll have to find out!" said the kids.
....."It's too cold to plant potatoes outside because it's frosty and frost kills potatoes" said Xavier
"What if we plant them in bags so we can bring them in at night" suggested Miss J.
"Well lets try" agreed the kids
......
We decided to write some instructions for people to read so they could plant potatoes if they wanted to. We worked together in groups and cooperated with eachother to get the job done.
"You are wonderful" smiled Miss J.
Read our instructions. Follow them and plant your own potato. Spuds for Christmas dinner!

We all had interesting ideas about what we might find in a cave. "Let's see if we can record our ideas." suggested Miss J.
"Not a problem". replied the children as they collected the paper, found the tools they needed and made a start.
"Don't forget to put in a horizon". said Caleb.
"...and there needs to be people" said Ngahuia.
"I'm getting out the dye" yelled Xavier. "We need the black and the green".
"Go for it " said Miss J.
"Your art work is amazing" said Miss J. "Let's see if we can add more information about whats in our caves and how we feel about that by writing .
