Enjoy your break. Don't forget while on holiday to continue to read. Remember, if it is wet, put away the technology, get out some board games, like cards, monopoly, charades. All these game can help your maths and communication skills.
Have a good break and see you all back on Monday 6th May.

Welcome to 2013. An exciting year ahead of us with the Year 5 and Year 6's all working as one team.
This year there will be focus on the children completing reading every night. There will be a reading log that children need to complete and have signed off by their parents. Children will be working towards their 25, 50, 100, 150, 200 nights certificates.
In addition I would encourage all children to complete the Achievement Award tasks. At the moment these are under review so watch this space. We will advise when these are ready to go. These are a great way to get children involved in learning outside the classroom.

During Term 2 our class worked writing a picture book based around the NZ Transport Feet First competition of being safe around roads. As we had cycle safety during this term, we decided to base our stories around being safe when riding.
We had to write a narrative picture book story making sure that biking and cycling was a part of the story.
We also conducted a survey during our maths time to find out about picture books and illustrations. We had to learn about illustrations, and we had an expert from the Rotorua Library come and talk to us. We then practised some techniques which we then had to apply to create our own illustrations for our story.
We then had to put our story and illustrations together into a digital format. Finally, to make it interactive, we added links to quizzes and other sites so you can learn more about being safe on bikes.
While we didn't win, our school received a 'highly commended' certificate for our Digital Picture Books.
Below is an example. Visit our individual pages to read our other stories.

As part of our picture book unit, we also learnt about illustrations. One technique was to create a shadow art background. We practised using indian ink and our illustration had to reflect biking within it.
We then had to assess our illustrations against our solo rubric.

We have been writing picture books and present these as e-books, now are playing around trying to find out the best way to publish these as e books. Power point seems to be the best in order to get our multimedia links in.

This term our focus has been on 'Safer Journeys for Kids'. As part of this we created a tricky tricycle piece of art work. We knew we were successfull when we had :
1. Used 3 circles, two triangles and lines to create the framework.
2. Added detail such spokes, handlebars, seats, pedals to the framework shape.
3. From our shapes and lines we have two tricycles which overlap.
Check out the kids pages for their individual reflections on this piece of art.

Check out our Modigliani Portraits. We have been studying Modigliani and his style of art. To show our understanding of his style we had to create a portrait in his style of using elongated features such as faces and necks. We followed process of first practising on A4, evaluating each practise portrait so we could improve on the next one. We then enlarged this to an A3 size, again evaluating our work before completed the A2 size. Below our photos show our A3 and A2 sizes.
We think the are primo!
Check out our individual blog pages for our own portraits and our reflection on our art.

'A place we stand.' Over the last 4 weeks we have been learning what it is to be part of a learning community. We looked at ourselves as learners, then we looked at building our learning expectations and finally creating our learning environment.
As part of learning about what it is to be part of a learning community, we had a two day trip and sleepover at school. During this time we undertook a number of experiences that included our 'maori community', 'our local community' and our 'school community'.
We visited Apumoana Marae, tried to do a Scavenger Race around our local community of Rotorua (the weather just wasn't on our side), created and participated in team building games, had a sleepover marae style in our school hall and then had a fun day getting to know each other at the Blue Lake on the Friday.
A big thank you must go to our parents who braved the foul weather on Thursday - although we didn't get the Scavenger Race done, the kids had a ball getting absolutely drenced and jumping in every puddle they could find (I secretly think the parents had just as much fun as the kids!), to the parents who worked tirelessly in the kitchen with limited equipment to feed 100 odd people due the cookout having to be cancelled, to those parents who got very little sleep at the sleepover and those who then braved the Blue Lake walk with some very tired children, swimming in the cold Blue Lake, cooking 200 odd sausages and played with the kids on the playground. Your help made the two days a fanastic experience and time for the kids.
Check out the photos below to see the fun we had.

Production is now less than 4 weeks away. You will need to learn the words to the songs you have to sing for our production. While you will have a copy of these words given to you, you can also find the words to the songs as an assignment on your blog page. The words to these songs MUST be learnt as these will not be shown for our production. Click on your assignment for this week to find the words to "The Race" and "A couple of Evil Doers'.

Think about what you have learnt about healthy food, why it is important to eat healthly and what effects this may have on our general well being and learning.
Then think about and design a label that persuades and sells healthly food as a product that will help learners learn.
Extension
Turn your label into an advertisement using any multi-media tool.
You can use any tools you wish - you can use your homework book, you can use any multimedia tool, ie fotobabble, sketchup etc to complete this task.

This term we have been working on our writing based around 'Spooky Stories.' We have been using Alan Peat's books, 'Exciting Sentences and Skeleton Plot.' The children were give a plot outline then brainstormed their own ideas based around the plot. Then using what they had learnt through the 'exciting sentences' sessions they crafted their own 'spooky stories'. Each group then collaboratively decided on their criteria for assessing their writing and then constructed a rubric. The rubrics for each of the groups are below the excerpts below. Below are some 'excerpts' from some of the stories. You can read the full stories by clicking on the children's own blog pages. "Samantha had woken up with her family gone. She had shouted, “Mum...Dad..” Where are they? The phone had started beeping as loud as an elephant trumpet screaming in the darkness on a cool winters eve. Samantha picked up the phone, with only heavy breathing to be heard. They had hung up. She shivered as if someone was watching her." "As the never ending stone coloured fog got worse the mother tried to work out the least dangerous route home to her warm house. She decides to turn into the two way highway. Even though she feels blind, the woman quickly remembers that there is a rocky, steep hill just before the street on which her home is. The road she is driving on is deathly still. She is in the right hand lane, aka the fast lane. As she nears the cracked, rough start of the hill she moves into the left lane, aka the slow lane." "When John closes the door, he decides to call his mum’s mobile. When John called his mum, he hears a ring coming from the master bedroom. “Oh no! Mum’s left her phone at home.” John looked through the window and said, “Holy mongoose in a monster truck! It’s the scarecrow!” he was right. Something was giving John an evil look. John was totally one hundred percent horrified. Betty’s phone rings again but all John hears is some evil hysterical laughing. Will this nightmare end for John? When will his family get home? Will this be the end for John? To be continued..." Mahy Groups self assessment rubric Crumpies Group self assessment Rubric Hills Group self assessment Rubric

This term we are working to make an animation movie for the 'Feet First' Competition. To start with we have had to learn about what pre production is. Here we have had to brainstorm out ideas, create a storyboard, make backgrounds and lego toys to use and begin to practise and trial what we are going to do. Some people have bought in the road maps for us to use. We have had to learn about camera shots and angles (views) which we have also been looking at in our maths programme.
We are looking foward now to moving to production where we will need to start taking photos and loading into our programme to make our movie.
Here some people are making backgrounds, others are practising with the equipment while others are using the lego to create props.

This term we are revisiting our narrative writing. We have based this around Super Heroes which ties in with our production theme.
Here is an excerpt from Anjan Singh's piece:
The Impentrable Chrome.
He briskly walked along the cold, dark, deserted prison. It had been deserted many years ago. He was going to destroy it.
His cloak flew behind him as he started into a brisk jog. His devil stick started glowing a bright light as he exited the building. His suit became much more tighter and he began to choke. The Impentrable Chrome was what he named himself, but will he survive? He jumped up onto the building and looked down, there was the Masked Jedi.....

On Tuesday Team 5 took part in a technology day. The purpose of this day was to complete a set of technology tasks that required children to work co-operatively and problem solve the tasks. The two tasks were:
The Span Bridge - build the longest span bridge that would hold a weight of 200 grams.
The Marble Drop - build a marble drop that would allow a marble to roll and hit a target approximately 3 metres away.
Both tasks had time limits of 20-to 30 minutes.
It was a lot of fun and of course....lots of newspaper!

This term we have been working on making our writing more exciting. Using a book by Alan Peat we have been practising making exciting sentences by using 2A (2 Adjectives), 3ed (3 adjectives ending in ed), extended similes and emotive,(comma) structures.
After practising putting these into small paragraphs, we then were given a Ghost Skeleton Plot. This is where we only have the 'bare bones' or parts of a story. We might have 8-10 simple sentences that we have to then 'flesh out' the story.
Our writing groups had some teaching and we broke off into groups of 2 or 3 or 4 people and we had to reconstruct the narrative plot. Below are what each of our groups did.
Foggy Life Saver (Shared Writing: Hill's group)
One foggy and misty, cold and windy night a woman drove her exhausted children down an old and forgotten, dusty gravel road. The fog was heavy so she couldn't see very far. She put on the old crackly car radio. Tired, exhausted, drained the children fell asleep.
Th misty, thick fog hovered like a dark blanket in winter on a cold freezing night. The tired, exhausted women is calculating the calmest way home. She decided the safest way home is the dual highway. Terrified, horrified, tired she was blind in the fog. She remembered the windy, steep hill she had to chug up silently to the warm, comfortable home. The dark bumpy gravel road was virtually empty. "Should I go into the slow lane or stay in the right hand faster land of the dual carriageway" the lean lady was thinking to herself. She slowly approached the steep hill. It was as steep as a half pipe at a smooth concrete skate park. Tired, exhausted and drained she quickly moved onto the left hand lane.
But as she does so, she hears a spooky, frightening, rusty voice whisper, "Go back into the fast lane." She ignores it. But a minute later she hears the urgent whisper again, a little louder than the first. Confused, frustrated, quetioning she does what she is told and moves into the fast lane and starts to go up the windy, slippery hill. She feels terrified, horrified and petrified on the inside and feels unsafe, unaware on the outside.
The tired sleepy woman's heart skips a beat as she suddenly realises she is passing a tattered, destroyed car. People are struggling to push it out of the way like pushing a giant out of a really small enclosed cage. She misses the care by just millimetres as she safely slows down on the otherside of the windy slippery hill. Scared, terrified she suddenly realises the crackly old radio is still playing loudly. How has she heard anything at all? What did she hear?
Foggy Lifesaver (Shared writing: Crumpies and Mahy's groups)
Jane Smith, a big shot lawyer was driving home late at night that it felt like she wasn't moving at all. The moon was bright in the sky but then in just a moment fog appeared and covered the moon and road making it hard to see. Inside her head she was repeating 'what if, what if....' as well she was working out the quickest way home. She turned the radio on to calm down her worried kids and they were soon asleep. They were soon smoothly rocking with the car.
Worried, terrified, petrified about getting lost, she takes the motorway and even though she can barely see anything at all, she remembers to go up a large and steep, slippery and wet hill just before the turn off to her futuristic house. The dark, clumpy, bumpy road was completely empty. Jane was driving in the right hand side laen and as she approaches the bottom of the hill she decided to move into the slow left hand one because she didn't want to have a horrible accident. Suddenly she heard a slow, gentle voice in her head say 'get back in the fast lane!'
Jane ignores the voice and keeps on driving at a normal pace. A minute later she hears the voice again, but this time it was even louder. 'Go back to the fast lane' said the voice, so she did and ended driving up a smooth hill in her flash black Holden.
Suddenly Jane drives past a broken, dented car on the left hand lane, with strangers moving the heavy car. Then she sees a dead body being pulled oup into the ambulance. As she safely goes down the hill she realises the radio is still playing. Had she heard anything at all? What did she hear? Was it the dead body's ghost warning her to shift back into the fast lane?

The day dawned beautiful. We could see that it was going to be sunny and probably hot for our Run Bike Run. We all arrived at school, excited, and with our bikes in tow, all decked out. Our class decided our theme colours were green and pink (yeah Whaea Andrea was really impressed!). We all looked great in our different pinks and greens. After morning tea we all assembled for the start. We had to first do the run (basically around our cross country route) then find our bikes and out onto Larcy, Lynmore Ave and down Iles Road (and yes there are one or two hills!) and then off we went on the final run up and down TeNgae Road (on the footpath of course). There was a prize for the best dressed and the person who put in the most effort. Lucy won the best dressed while Cyrus won the best effort. It was a cool day and we all enjoyed the cold ice block at the end of the run.
Whaea Andrea bought her bike and she rode around (several times) following us on the run and bike ride. We reckon next year she should do the run with us!!!
Check us out!! Well done to Maddie who managed to get a photo of everyone. Kau ma te wehi!

On Tuesday 16th our team went to the hall to do a technology challenge. We were all in teams and we had to work together and problem solve to construct 2 items. We had to make the talletst free standing tower with only 10 pieces of newspaper and 20cm of Sellotape. After this we then had to construct a tennis court, with a net, two bats and a ball. The teachers came and tested out our bats and most were way too floppy.
After lunch we all went back to the hall and re-did the challenge. Over lunch some of us discussed this and amazingly there were lots more towers than in the morning and the bats were way better. It was a great day, although we did find it a challenge!
Check out our photos!

Wow, Mrs Tolley wrote a letter to Mr Dempster. Check out what she thought of you all. Cool eh!
Well done Room 8.
In case you can't quite read it she wrote the following:
"Thank you for hosting me at Lynmore Primary School on 20th August. I very much enjoyed visiting Andrea Tapsell's classroom and talking to the students about their use of ICT for learning. It was wonderful to experience such a vibrant classroom where the children were using digital technologies to enhance their learning. Please pass on my appreciation and thanks to her."

Last Friday, Mrs Anne Tolley, Minister for Education, visited our class to see our learning and ICT in action. She was here on a visit to discuss with the principals about ICT and wanted to see classrooms in action. Unfortunately it was during our Friday community time, but as a class, we stayed back and showed her how we used ICT to enhance our learning.
Although Mrs Tolley was in our room for only a short time, we were able to show her lots of different ways we used our ICT for learning.
Well done Room 8, you are a fanastic class and Mrs Tolley acknowledged to me what a great class you are. Kau te wehi Room 8.

This term has seen us look at how animals behave in zoos and in the wild. Along with visiting the Hamilton Zoo, we had to research an animal of our choice and write a report about it. We also had to research the type of behaviour it would display in the wild then think of an enrichment toy that would enrich its life while in capitivity in a zoo.
We had to use google sketchup to design our toy then using this plan make a mock up model. Here are our models we made.
To find out more about our enrichment toys and see our plans visit our individual pages.

A few weeks ago, our lovely girls had a special day out doing a self defence course. We thought the boys should do something special too! So they spent the day constructing these great 'tigers'. They had lots of fun making, painting and of course showing the girls what they had been up to while they had been out at their course.

We had a great day at the Hamilton Zoo. We explored the zoo and saw lots of different animals in their natural habitat enclosures. We also saw the different types of enrichment items that the zoo keepers use so the animals can behave as though they would if they were in the wild.

Excitement builds as our trip to the Hamilton Zoo is almost here.
Don't forget you will need to:
1. Be at school at your classroom at 8:15am
2. Make sure you have good sturdy walking shoes.
3. Have a warm jacket or polar fleece
4 Have a rain jacket (it is predicted to be showery in Hamilton on Wednesday)
5. Have food for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea as well as a drink for the day.
6. A smile!
Parents: It is expected that we will leave the Zoo no later than 3pm. Our expected time of arrival back at school will be between 4-5pm. We will be ringing the school on leaving Hamilton with an expected time back which will be put on our info line.

We have found this neat little site where we can build a 'Wildself'. We had lots of fun doing this then we wrote a description of our setting and then our character we had created.
Visit our pages on our own blogs to see the fun we had writing about our Wildself.

Wednesday saw our class, along with another head off to the Aquatic Centre for a day on Water Safety. The kids were all excited as they headed off to get changed and very quickly were into their rotations. These activities were Kayaking where the children were taught the correct way of getting in and out of a kayak as well as tipping out and how to get back on it. At the lifejacket activity children were taught how to enter the water correctly with lifejackets on, how to make a huddle and how to use that to keep a person afloat who didn't have a lifejacket. Two other activities were done in the deep water pool which challenged some children who were a little frightened or apprehensive in water over their heads. However they soon gained lots of confidence and some were quite confident to jump into deep water away from the edge and make their way to the side. The smiles of the children's faces were just priceless and for me, made the day all that much more worthwhile.
Thanks to the many parents who willingly spent the day in the water with the kids. What a great day! (Don't know about the rest of you, but I found I fell asleep by 8:30pm!!!)
Enjoy the photos below.

Wow what a lot of discussions going on with Wally. Some of you have hidden Wally really well. Don't forget to go back in and make sure you answer the questions that are being asked.
Some of the discussions are getting involved so when you go in you need to look at all the questions asked, sort through the information(gosh there's one of our future learning stages!)and see if you can get any clues as to where Wally might be hiding.
Go for it guys. Some great discussions going on.

Well done to those of you who have put your thoughts and ideas up on the wiki already. You not only have some really great thoughts and ideas about how you want to be treated but also how you should treat others.
Don't forget this must be done by Monday next week if you haven't already done it. You can also go in and see what others have said and comment on this too.
