Our Week
by spyman, bikerman, youngrider, and dominantdog
This is what we are doing in science, Social Studies, reading, and math. We learned about soil, rocks, and the crust in science. We learned about humus, and what worms do to soil. In Social Studies, we learned about Junior Achievement. In math, we are learning about counting up with quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies, and half dollars. We are learning about comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expand vocabulary. We are trying to reach our goals in reading.

Another quarter begins! Thanks for welcoming our new student teacher. She will be with us for the entire quarter and will be graduating soon.
The kids are very excited about reading with Raz-Kids.com! You can find the student user name and password in their STAR Binder. It is taped to the inside pocket.
We are almost done with our unit on Rocks. Today, we played Rock Jeopardy to review for the test. Then on Tuesday, November 24, the unit test will be given. In math, identifying and counting coins could be practiced at home. The kids should be able to count collections of coins that include half-dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
I have a lot of neat pictures to post as soon as I get my computer back from the "Geek Squad." It has the anit-virus virus, and I can't find another computer at school that has a place to insert a memory card. So, you can look forward to pictures soon!! The kids have been doing a lot of explorations in science too!
Check back soon:)

We have been learning about verbs, so the students identified the verbs in Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and replaced them with similar words. We practiced finding new words in a thesaurus. I hope you enjoy our new version of the story! Thanks for inspiring us http://jenuinetech.com/!!

Wow, the outpouring of support for the blogging students is amazing! We are very excited and will be using Google Earth to mark where all of our blogging visitors are from! Thank you! This week is a short week. We still will be making predictions and solving many math problems that have to do with our huge class pumpkin. Our Bat Webquest will also be finished this week. The excitement is building as the kids are learning all about Mega and Micro Bats! If you go to our web site, click on the kids link, and then science. You will find the webquest there. In spelling this week, we are reviewing our word wall words from previous weeks. They are entered at Spelling City. You can even print the words for your child to practice. Please make sure to choose D'Nealean Handwriting, for that is the type of printing we are using. I enjoyed meeting parents at conferences and look forward to the second part of conferences on Tuesday night. Please stay tuned and check back often to view our Snazzy Snack pictures of our Spider Webs.

The students had a lot of fun stacking Oreos! First, they predicted how high they could stack the Oreo cookies before they came tumbling down. Every student had two attempts to stack. After that, we recorded everyone's largest stack and calculated our class average. It was 17.
This project is taking place around the world. Classes from Canada, Scotland, and Japan are even participating. Today, we will be working together to make a Voice Thread. The students will analyze their findings and write about it. Then their responses will be recorded using the Voice Thread. If you go to the link on the side called http://jenuinetech.com, it will take you to all of her projects. You can find our class projects by going to http://mrsgsclass.com and then What's New? The 2009 link will take you to our tentative projects for the year.
Oh, I can't forget to share our sculptures. After everyone was done stacking the Oreos, the kids used the frosting to make sculptures. Check out our Animoto Video above to view some of them.

In second grade today, we made applesauce. First, we peeled and sliced our apples with an apple slicer. Then we put it in the crockpot. After that, we turned it on high and are waiting to eat it. We also put a little cinnamon and sugar in it. Yum! We'll try it after recess!! We are also learning how to blog right now.
