Dear Parents,
As most of you have already discovered, your child brought home a canvas bag with books in it last Wednesday. These bags are called Literature Bags. You can see all the different bags by going to http://www.mrsgsclass.com/bags.htm. I e-mailed you a generic form that is included in each bag. It explains what the Literature Bags are all about. Please make sure your child returns all the books/activities in the bag before it comes back to school on Tuesday. Then on every Thursday, they can choose to bring home another bag. This is not homework, but it is intended to encourage your child to enjoy reading...."Just for fun!" They can include the reading they do with these books as their fifteen minutes of reading, though.
Also, don't forget to turn in your Six Flags Reading Incentive Form when the six hours of reading is completed. All forms are due back to me by February 16th. You can turn the forms in early, too.
The links for science fair ideas have been added to our wiki...http://mrsgoneau.pbworks.com/Science-Rocks%21. I also sent home a packet that explains the science fair process. Please feel free to direct science fair questions to me. I will also allow students to do research in class if necessary.
Have a super week!
The students researched how tall some penguins were, measured out their height using string, and posted the heights in the hallway.
Please go to the student pages and read what else they learned about penguins. We love blog comments too! THANKS!

As we celebrate our success in second grade, we have much to look forward to. The voracious second grade students are wanting to read all the time. THEY LOVE TO READ. Our latest strategy that we have been practicing is visualizing to help with comprehension. We had a blast doing a visualizing activity with a lollipop. I explained to the students that the only part of their body that moves when you visualize is your brain. Then...picture the second graders getting a lollipop, choosing a color(s) and flavor, opening up the wrapper, and then eating it without moving??? I really should have taped it. It was priceless. As I'm sure you can imagine, some just couldn't refrain from acting it out. I love these kids. They are so precious. :):):)
Just a reminder that the Six Flags Reading Incentive is in full swing. The six hours of reading is due to me by February 19. Please make sure to keep track of your "extra" reading minutes. This should not include your fifteen minutes of reading every night. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, January 29. It is also the same day we go to The Theater for Young Audiences. If you didn't return your permission slip, please do so soon.
Here are some fun activities to look forward to...Snazzy Snacks, World Math Day, Internet Projects: Everyone Counts, Green Eggs and Ham, and St. Patrick's Day fun. All the internet projects are tied into required curricular learning. It's just a fun way to do it.
Have an awesome week and happy blogging!

Wow, 2010! Before we move forward, I would like to reflect on our first four months of learning in second grade. There sure has been a lot of progress!! With The Daily Five and using the CAFE menu for our reading goals, the students are pinpointing the areas in reading they need to work on. The kids have been working hard at accomplishing these goals too. Many students have attained their initial reading goals and are moving on to using other strategies to meet new goals! Raz-Kids, our online reading, has helped students become excited about reading too. Keep up the voracious reading kids!! I am soooo proud of you. Math, science, Social Studies, writing, English, gym, art, music...You have been such hard workers and have learned to work together as a whole team. A reflection of this is reaching our class goal of moving our guitar from A----->Z. We worked together as a team and received recognition for our cooperation and kindness!! Way to go.
As we move into a new decade, I know your excitement for learning will continue to grow. We will continue to infuse technology into all aspects of our learning. Hang on, for the second half of our "Rockin' Year of Learning!"

I'm sure you are all having a great time spending some quality time with your family. I encourage you to blog about what your are doing.
I am enjoying spending time with my family too! My husband and I got to spend some wonderful time together cross-country skiing through the kettles. It was just gorgeous. We also had a lot of fun playing family games too.
What have you been up to?
I hope you are appreciating all life has to offer during this break. It could be as simple as cuddling with the ones you love and watching an excellent movie. Or, telling those special to you how much they mean to you.
Have a wonderful time...See you next year.

We had a lot of fun taking part in Fairy Tale Activities last week with Mrs. N's class. The kids learned the story elements that make up fairy tales. Then they chose to read a variety of fairy tales and identify those elements. As a culminating activity, we went down to the auditorium to watch the video, The Princess and the Pea.
Gingerbread Houses were made after the children acted outThe Gingerbread Man. We also read two gingerbread books by Jan Brett called Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Friends.
For Snazzy Snacks, the kids enjoyed creating "Rudie the Reindeer." Many pictures will be posted after the holiday. Did you know how long a caribou's antlers can get? Ask your child to share this and other interesting information about reindeer. The nonfiction article was compared to a fiction story called The Wild Christmas Reindeer...another great story by Jan Brett.
We couldn't have done these fun activities without your help! Thanks for all the goodies that were sent in, so the kids could have filled stockings, enjoy Snazzy Snacks, and decorate yummy gingerbread houses.
**Optional holiday homework was sent home in the Star Binders.
Please remind your child to read for at least 15 minutes a day and practice math facts too. After break, we will officially start Rocket Math, which is our timed math facts program.
Don't forget that www.raz-kids.com is a wonderful and fun way to practice reading. If you go to www.mrsgsclass.com/math, your child can also review their math facts.
Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
