The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. The International Day of Biodiversity also takes place during May. The theme for the Voices of the World May task is biodiversity. We are going to show the diversity in our planet by taking photographs or drawing pictures of plants and animals that are native to your local area. There must not be any photographs of the children within the presentation. All six (6) photographs and pictures must be original for copyright reasons. Each slide should include the following text and spoken words in your language.
Page 1 - “Hello, school name, country"
Page 2 - “Our World is Special”
Page 3 - “Variety is all around”
Page 4 - “Care for our World”
Page 5 - “Look after our future”
Page 6 - "Goodbye"

One of our students went on a walk through the ACS Visual Arts Show this morning. He used my camera to capture much of what is on display. Then, he cropped each picture, and exported the folder of edited pictures to a shared folder.
Great student work all around!

We start school on Monday. Are you ready? Here's a little story I wrote about going back. Perhaps you'd like to write a story, too. If you do, add the link to your blog, just as I have done. Once you sign in, go to Create. Then choose an artist whose illustrations you will use in your story; just add the words!
My little town needs your help! We're trying to win an orchard. Consider "planting your vote" for Bloomington, Indiana. Click here Communities Take Root, then on Leaders, then cast your vote.
You can vote once a day, everyday, until the end of the contest. I'm hoping Bloomington wins on April 30th.

A few years ago, I saw something on a TV program that I liked, and I made a blog posting.Blog posting: May 11, 2008
It was a tense time for us in Beirut, then, but now things are much better, so my 3 words are different than they were before.
Describe your week in three words. You can sing it, you can say it, you can write it, you can draw it. It can be funny or sad or poignant as long as it’s honest.
~~
Today, Friday, my three words are:
calm
happy
eager
I'd love to hear Your 3 Words!

This has been a good week for me.
On February 7, my son returned from med school interviews in the US. He brought Mr. Bean home with him, too! What fun we're having with this little fellow.
Monday, Feb. 8 while you students were at home, we teachers had a Professional Development Day. We got a lot of work done.
Tuesday, Feb. 9 was Mar Maroun Day. We got that day off school, too. I read that AC in 5A did something exciting over the holiday. Did you do anything special?
Wednesday, Feb. 10 was back to normal for many of us, but Grade 5 had a special day. They went tree planting in the Shouf. (Hopefully some student related articles will appear.)
With Grade 4A and 4B in Faqra last week and Grade 5 in the Shouf on Wednesday, we were able to finish the January MAP Testing sessions. We're done till April!
For the remainder of the week, I'll be finishing grades; report cards go out on Monday.
Soon we begin Landmark Games 2010! Remind your teachers of the registration deadline! You guys have to come up with your landmark and 9 clues by February 16th!

I think we're all disappointed about the no snow dilemma. But, perhaps next week will bring some. In the winter, I always think that when it's raining in Beirut, it's snowing in the mountains. From what I've heard, and according to the weather indicator above, we're supposed to have rain this coming week.
Check out the WebCam in Faraya (Mzaar). It's kind of fun to view previous years, as well as watch the snow accummulate this year. Click to see the WebCam.
If you want more detailed weather information about Beirut than the above widget provides, check the Cyberia site. It also gives information for several other Lebanese locations. Cyberia Weather

A few years ago I had a Shelfari for different grade levels. Here is the one I hosted for Grade 5 students. Do you have any books you'd like me to add? If you do, either drop me an email, or add a comment, giving me the title, author, and your review of the book, and then I'll add your book to this Shelfari.
(Gently move your cursor over the books to see the book reviews appear. Don't click, just wait patiently. And if it doesn't open from school, be even more patient and try at home.)

On Friday evening my son, a friend, and I spent quite a lot of time playing "24". It's really fun, but it can be frustrating.
The object of the game is to make the number 24 by using the four given numbers.7, 7, 6, 5 drove us crazy! Sami finally got the solution. Can you solve it? Consider leaving the answer as a comment.
Here's an example of one way to solve for 1, 2, 2, 7.
7 - 1 = 6 2 x 2 = 44 x 6 = 24

Have you ever been locked in the computer lab? All of the 5D students can answer that with a loud "YES". Today the door knob mechanism broke and we were all stuck in the lab. Some of the 5D students were done with their MAP test, but couldn't leave the lab; some had to go to the bathroom, but had to wait, and lucky Mr. Easton -- he even thought he might get out of recess duty! Physical Plant sent a few people to work on the door. Finally, after about only 15 minutes, the door was opened. Then, during the next MAP testing session, the Physical Plant workers came back and worked on the door knob some more. Now the ES Computer Lab door is back to functioning well; it opens, closes, locks, and can even be unlocked!
I'll share a few stories of my own about being locked in places, but not right now. (Once when I was 8, I was locked in the bathroom..... And then when I was 28, I was locked in a laundry room in the middle of August in Riyadh..... Details to come.)
Do you have any Locked in .....stories to share?

Sunday morning, I had the pleasure of an African dance/song troupe meandering in my neighborhood, ending their trek with a rehearsal at Haigaizian University. I will enjoy the performance, when it comes.
And then a wonderful surprise at the AUB concert on Sunday evening. A huge thumbs up to all the performers in last evening's AUB concert--several from our ACS community! I thought it was a spectacular performance!
I saw several ACS teachers and one ACS student. I assume the children of the ACS parent performers were also in the audience. Didn't those of you who attended think the AUB concert was great?
And last Thursday, just before the Poetry Cafe began, we had three very talented performers playing for us.

The folowing poem is published with the permission of the author.
The Day
"I see the day
stars will connect
I see the day
the feeling of competition
will fade
I sense the day
coming
But I can't exactly say when
I can feel it
I can see it
But I am not living it
I see
Ghandi
Fighting with peace
Martin
dreaming
John Hancock
signing for independence
Maya Angelou
on the roof
singing for equality
God in the air
We are all reunited
No bloody stars
No guns and weapons
No fearsome words
No single spotlight
The day
will come
some day.

I guess Mr. Easton must be busy with other things -- he forgot to send a poem today. So, I'll share one that one of our 5th grade students wrote.
Alone
I was a little girl,
Who was different in my own way.
No one accepted my unique touch,
They never even tried to reach out,
Always repelling from my soft, kind grasp.
I tried explaining to them,
That what you see,
I can’t control.
It’s your heart that counts,
They wouldn’t listen to a word I say.
Every day, I look out in the stars,
With my hands on my heart,
And wish…
That one day,
I will have a friend.

Welcome back to school. Only 9 days to the Poetry Cafe.
Pebbles
Pebbles belong to no one
Until you pick them up-
Then they are yours.
But, which, of all the world’s
Mountains of little broken stones,
Will you choose to keep?
The smooth black, the white,
The rough gray with sparks
Shining in its cracks?
Somewhere the best pebble must
Lie hidden, meant for you
If you can find it.

There is a Place
There is a Place
Where the museum houses thousands of paintings
Seen nowhere else in the world,
The colors so bright they grab your eyes
And hold you there, looking,
Were the library is filled with brand new books
Waiting for you to open them first
To tell stories only you could now,
Where fresh cherries have no pits,
Where puppies never grow old,
There is such a place,
Hidden deep
In me.

Summer Stars
Bend low again, night of summer stars.
So near you are, sky of summer stars,
So near, a long-arm man can pick off stars
Pick off what he wants in the sky bowl,
So near you are, summer stars,
So near, strumming, strumming,
So lazy and hum-strumming.

Dog
Under the maple tree
The dog lies down,
Lolls his limp
Tongue and yawns,
Rests his long chin
Carefully between
Front paws;
Looks up, alert;
Chops with heavy
Jaws, at a slow fly,
Blinks, rolls, On his side,
Sighs, closes
His eyes: sleeps
All afternoon
In his loose skin.

During Poetry Month, Mr. Easton sends a daily poem to all the teachers. This year I'll share them with you, too.
April 2
The Stray Cat
It’s just an old alley cat
that has followed us all the way home.
It hasn’t a star on its forehead,
or a silky shiny coat.
No proud tiger stripes, no dainty tread,
no elegant velvet throat.
It’s a splotchy, blotchy
city cat, not pretty cat,
a rough little tough little bag of old bones.
What shall we call this
city cat, not pretty cat,
this rough little tough little bag of old bones?
“Beauty” we shall call you,
“Beauty, come in.”
Eve Merriam in The Singing Green
April 3
The Dream Keeper
Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamers,
Bring me all of your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world.
Langston Hughes in Don’t You Turn Back

What's the math here? $7.00 per student 68 fifth grade students With that amount, teachers have arranged to purchase 425 trees. What is the cost per tree? Good for the Grade 5 students (and teachers)! And here's another way to help the environment. VOTE EARTH.

And finally you went off to Faqra, with skiing, fun, and friends. Now it's time to settle back into school; the Landmark 2009 Game is a great way to make learning fun.
I have placed the Week One clues on my website in both Word and pdf formats. I have also placed an Excel sheet that I made to help me track the information; you're welcome to use it, modify it, or make one of your own. To access the page, you'll have to use your viewer code, though. Landmark 2009

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2009 is the Year of the Ox. The Ox, or the Buffalo sign symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work. Those born under the influence of the Ox or Buffalo are fortunate to be stable and persevering. The typical Ox is a tolerant person with strong character. Not many people could equal the resolution and fearlessness that the Ox exhibits when deciding to accomplish a task. Ox people work hard without complaints at work or at home. They know that they will succeed through hard work and sustained efforts, and do not believe in get-rich-quick schemes.

New Year's Resolutions, Reflections and Goals
These are good words to think about as we start back to school. Soon you'll be sitting for the January MAP Tests. Reflect on what you've done before. What did you find easy? What did you find particularly difficult? Try setting a goal or two for MAP tests. Who knows how well you might end up doing! I know that I would try to read the questions more carefully and be sure to take my time. I think I would also review Mr. Easton's multiple-choice test taking strategies, especially the part about making sensible guesses since every question has to be answered.

Snow update (12/22/08) I don't think the rain in Beirut is helping with snow in the mountains, nor did the music I added. What do you think? Well, as of this morning (12/23) things are looking a little better.

"With Eid al Adha and Christmas so close together, the celebrations have almost merged to create one big holiday! This image of downtown Beirut seems to symbolize the spirit of peace and forgiveness that embodies the season. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!" Robert Easton
How many of you have been downtown to see the decorations? Do you have any photos to share?

To those celebrating this Eid, Eid Mubarak.
To all of you, have a wonderful 5-day vacation from school. See you on Thursday, December 11 (Day 5).
My husband and I are leaving Beirut in just a little while for a visit to his family. If you post an article or comment over the next few days, please be patient. I don't know if I'll have Internet connection or not. I will approve your postings when I can.

On Friday afternoon, a teacher was doing some of her corrections in the computer lab. I saw this wonderfully colorful paper. The teacher had said that after the students finished their work, they could turn the paper over and draw. Wow, look at this drawing!

Grade 4 will be going to Byblos, but not as originally planned (Friday); they'll be going on Monday, instead. Students have been asked to visit four websites to gather information. Ten Facts About Byblos articles will soon be appearing. (I've already written mine, but I'm waiting to see yours first!)

Any 4B students ready to write an article about the process? Is this work based on the artwork of someone famous? If so, will you tell me who? Miss Tala will be posting more artwork, from time to time. She will also be expecting some written responses from you all! Please be patient; it takes a little time for the photos to load.

Your teachers have been busy!
On Friday, November 7, ACS students had a day off. While the students were off, the teachers had an opportunity to participate in the Mini-NESA 2008 Conference. We had a lot of elementary school teachers presenting. Congratulations to all of the ACS presenters! The article in the newspaper, Lebanese, Syrian and Jordanian teachers attend workshops hosted by ACS, shows a picture of Dr. Damon welcoming our keynote speaker, the Lebanese Education Minister Bahia Hariri. So, while you were having a day of vacation, know that we were attending a conference and learning more to share with you!
Mabruk to Mrs. Hoballah, Miss Arij and Mrs. Zahr. And also to Mr. Moore, Mr. Owyang, Miss Yara, and Mrs. Aboulhosn!

Today, the first 4th grade class came to the computer lab. See! We all learned to type our names in Arabic.
عمرمالكمحمدسامر
كريم فيصل محمد حسن
لين تيا ليلى كريم
باربرة بشّور
We used the regular keyboard, but we typed the Arabic letters. It wasn't easy! All our computers at school are Arabic enabled. For those of you without Arabic, please check out this link to see what our keyboards look like. arabic.speak7.com/arabic_keyboard.html

Several schools within Class Blogmeister are participating in a global communication project. I think this is a really neat way for us to start this year's blog activity.
Our Grade 5 students are participating; I would like Grade 4 to participate as well. You can go to the Grade 5 blog and read some of the student entries (left margin).
Your assignment:
Think about seven random facts. Type your 7 facts into a Word document, starting with 7 Random Facts as the title. The seven random facts should be about you, ACS, or Lebanon. Be sure not to include personal information that should not be shared on line.
After the 7 Random Facts articles are written and added to your blog, I will post links to the other participating schools and a comment exchange will begin. (Details for the commenting will come later.)
7 Random Facts (by Mrs. B)
1. I love playing computer games while watching TV. I only stop playing the games during mystery shows.
2. Before I go to bed at night, I play a couple of rounds of backgammon with my husband. I am currently ahead!
3. I graduated from the oldest boarding school in the United States; it was founded in 1744.
4. Among the alumni are two of the 56 original signers of the 1776 Declaration of Independence - Benjamin Rush and Richard Stockton.
5. I have lived half my life in the US and half my life in the Middle East.
6. When I read a really good book, I find it hard to stop until I'm finished with the book. Once I read all day, all night, and all the next day, so I could finish the book. Then I cried for weeks because it was so sad and it was over.
7. Although I don't have animals in my house now, at one time or another, I have had cats, dogs, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, white mice, turtles, fish, a hedgehog, and a raccoon for pets.

I don't know who to thank for the wonderful image; it is not my photograph. It was forwarded to me by a friend. When I tried to find the original owner, to ask permission to post the photo, I found several versions floating about on the Internet.

Thursday, June 19th -- ACS ES Move-Up Day
Friday, June 20th -- ACS Students' Last Day
A busy last few days, but now summer vacation is here. Have a wonderful summer.
Your Grade 3 blog will be maintained over the summer. I need to learn about how to move all your accounts into your new classes.
I'll be eager to read postings from you about the wonderfully exciting things you're doing.
If you begin to miss school, visit the Grade 5 blog. There's a little video clip of some pictures that a few Grade 5 students took, on a walk-through the school.

I've been having a wonderful time during Multicultural Week. During the June 12th Circle Gatherings, I learned so many things! Some of what I learned made me realize I want to learn even more about that country. Here are just a few things that I learned on Thursday.
1) England: There are more than 230 different kinds of birds in England.
2) South Korea: The red shape on the flag is bigger than the blue, although to me it looks the same.
3) Thailand: If the owner is mean to his elephant, the elephant will be mean to the owner.
4) Ancient Mesopotamia: There was a festival for the new year in which the real king takes the day off and a person is chosen randomly to be the King for a Day.
5) Italy: Italy has two countries inside it -- Vatican City and San Marino.
6) Puerto Rico: I learned about a wedding tradition -- a doll is made and people give the doll wedding presents.
7) India: The women wear colorful dresses.
What did you learn walking about the ACS Elementary School? Remember, all the information is displayed on the bulletin boards!
A big thank you goes to the 5th grade students who have been walking the halls, stairways, and outside areas to capture on camera what's going on.

With Mrs. Branch away, I think Coco might be getting into some trouble! When will be Mrs. Branch be getting back? Coco went to the Circus Carnival on Friday evening, but the noise was too much. He only stayed a short time and then went home with Miss Founouni. I wonder if he'll come back to school barking? You do know Miss Founouni has 4 dogs!

On Monday, May 19th, we're back to school!
Classes begin at 9:30 AM; arrival from 9:00 AM.
(Teachers have to be there at 7:30 AM!)
I think we'll all be glad to get back!
This evening, while sitting on our balcony, we heard an airplane. We looked up and watched the first MEA flight return to Beirut. What a wonderful sight.
Lebanese resilience is truly amazing!
(If you don't know what resilience means, look it up in the dictionary. It's an awesome word.)

Today on my walk to school, I decided to only take pictures of pleasant sights -- and there are so many in this lovely city!
I walked past army tanks, road blocks, full garbage bins, dented cars, open stores, closed stores, people (I even saw Mr. Easton.), children, and more. But, here are the pleasant sights!
I worked for a little while, visited with a few teachers, and then continued working again. The other teachers and I miss the students, but we get more work done this way!
And then I began my walk home.....
While walking home, through AUB, I bumped into a couple of ACS students just enjoying the beautiful day.
A farewell to the area.
And then I was home.
What was your day like?

Today I walked down to school through AUB. It sure was beautiful! A much prettier view of Beirut than I've been seeing on the TV news.
This morning at 11:00 AM, ACS had a meeting for faculty and staff.
We know that it's hard for students to be advised on a day-to-day basis about school closures; it's also hard on the school--teachers included. So, at a board meeting today, ACS decided to set a target date of Monday, May 19, 2008 to reopen. We certainly hope to be able to get back to school then. It will still be a Day 3!
Mrs. Branch has asked teachers to make sure that we connect with our students. I think the blog is an excellent way to connect. So, if you're able to access the Internet, please let us hear from you. Your teachers are posting "homework" online -- make sure you check your teacher's class website.
Take care, be safe, and hope to see you on May 19th!
Mrs. B

Here is Dr. Damon's letter, posted on the ACS website.
Monday, May 12, 2008
Dear Community Members:
Due to the continuing political uncertainties, the school remains closed.
The target date for reopening the school is Monday, May 19, 2008.
IB exams are held as scheduled.
Starting Tuesday, May 13, 2008, all academic offices and some of the other administrative offices will be open from 10:00 to 2:00 pm.
Want to add your books to the Great Books bookshelf? Just let me know the title of your recommended book. We can add your comments, when you're in the computer lab the next time.

Take a look at what some of your school friends have made. This is a collaborative effort of 2C students and their teacher, Miss Yara, Miss Fatima (ASL), and me. I wonder what the April task will be!
After the website opens, scroll down to Lebanon and click on the flag. Enjoy!

Catch the Reading Bug
I Love to Read Week – March 10 - 16
The Reading challenge:
Last year our reading goal for the Lower School was 150,000 minutes. We broke the record. This year’s goal is to read 155,000 minutes during the week. We are looking forward to another record breaking year.
The activities for the week are:
Monday, March 10: Assembly
During Assembly, we will all take our favorite reading and read together, silently. Grade 3A will sing the library song. Grade 3B will present a skit. The rest of the day will set the tone and energy level for the following week. So, let’s read, read, read! Let’s make sure that our televisions are off on Monday.
Tuesday, March 11:
Travel around the world folktale. World’s folktales will be the star of Tuesday. We will read as many folktales from as many countries as we can. Our challenge is to bring unknown or very little known folktale into the spotlight. We just might be surprised to know how Very much in common we all have.
Wednesday, March 12:
Pajama or slippers Day. Everyone in the Lower School, including teachers, will wear their pajamas or slippers to school and read or be read to.
Thursday, March 13:
Top it off with your favorite book (include author, illustrator or character) Students and teachers will wear hats or simple headbands related to their favorite book, author or illustrator. (Wouldn’t be fun to guess the book, author or illustrator.)
Friday, March 14:
Circle Around Reading Day. On this day, everyone will bring their favorite book to their circles and present it in a brief book talk.
Thank you. Your Lower School Librarians and The I Love To Read Week Committee

Welcome back from Faqra, Grade 3.
I hope you've enjoyed your time on the ski slopes. Please add a comment, or two, to let us all know about your time up in the mountains -- the first time away from home, for many.
Again, welcome back.

Back From Faqra!
Well, fourth grade is back from Faqra! I had a wonderful time there, skiing, playing in the snow. I hope third grade has a fun time there like I did! My favorite part was when we got free time, Oh boy, we got all our hair WET!! It was from the snow; we had a snow ball fight and WOW! Everybody got hit, all of us thought that we have to take a shower. After that, we were all so tired and wet, we had done amazing snowmen and all it took was working together! I had a wonderful time there!
Good luck third grade!

The first thing we'll have to do is read the Blogger's Contract. You'll have to sign the contract to be able to participate. Are you willing to think about these three things before contributing anything to your blog?
Is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary?
Those three things are really important!
