We just finished our writing unit on determining the "BIG IDEA" in an author's text. Instead of using short passages or books, we decided to find the BIG IDEA in songs. We read the lyrics to the song, listened to it, determined the BIG IDEA, and finally thought about what emotion the author of the song was trying to evoke in us.

As the students reflected on the past week of work, they wrote a blog entry on their own blog. Read what the students thought of the unit, what they learned, as well as other information they decided to include. As always, be sure to comment on the blogs. The students and I look forward to hearing from you!

So, it's been awhile, huh?  We're getting ready to rip into blogs again and thought that it would be a great idea to write about something that just happened to us... HOLIDAY BREAK!

Read our latest blogs to find out what we did over our holiday break.  You might learn about someone's favorite activity they did, a place he/she traveled to, or maybe even just how much we all missed school!

Welcome Back!

Well, we're back for another exciting year.  We had a great run over the past two years and are sad to say goodbye to the former BEST FIFTH GRADE ON EARTH, but are happy to send them off as the current BEST SIXTH GRADE ON EARTH!  I am happy to have a new crop of fifth graders to work with this year.

We will again be using blogs as a form of communication, a way to express our thoughts in writing, and as a way to consume and critique other students' writing.  For your fist blog of the year, tell the world why you are excited to be in fifth grade, what you are looking forward to the year, and how you're feeling as you enter your last year in elementary school.  Be sure to tell everyone why you are eager to be a part of THE BEST FIFTH GRADE ON EARTH!

It's been awhile...

Whew!  Have we been busy or what?!?!?  In the past few weeks alone, we have had our 5th grade track meet, we went on a field trip to Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame) and Howe Caverns, and finished our exit project, Famous Americans.

During all that time, we kind of neglected our blogs.  But today, we are back in full force!    Check out our latest blogs regarding our aforementioned exit project, Famous Americans.

Harris Burdick

Article posted May 6, 2008 at 01:21 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 1179

I just love a good mystery. Our class just read one of my all time favorite books –The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. Since we are currently working on one of our 6+1 Traits of Good Writing, we thought that this would be a perfect book to use with the trait of Ideas.

While we read the story, we each chose a picture to use as our “Idea Guide”. Next, we used that picture to come up with a message that we wanted the reader to understand from our story. We want our readers to think while they read our writing.

Keep an eye out for these stories, they’ll be up shortly! Please remember to respond to what you read on our blogs. It will be interesting to see if you got “the message” that we were trying to convey. We look forward to hearing from you!

April Showers?

Article posted April 1, 2008 at 05:59 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 557

You know the saying, "April showers bring May flowers?" Well April showers are one of my least favorite times. I really don't like the muck, mush, and general sloppiness of the weather. Plus, you can’t golf in weather that mucky. Even wiping the mud off my dog's feet is a nasty job.

This got me to thinking... What if I could make it rain anything that I wanted it to? What would I make it rain? Offhand, I thought I would make it something cool, like making it rain soda or milkshakes. Then I thought about the environment. If I changed the rain, would I mess up the environment?

Well, our class has decided to write what they would like to rain - except water. Tell us what you think!
