The fifth graders involved in this blog are learning how to blog and work collaboratively on the Internet. They are learning the basics in writing their opinions, thoughts, and concerns for an audience.
Explorers of the New World: Ferdinand Magellan, Christopher Columbus, Vasco Da Gama, Lewis and Clark, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Hernando Cortez, Marco Polo, Amerigo Vespucci, Bartholomeu Dias, Samuel de Champlain, Henry Hudson.......
Dear Families: Your child has been assigned an explorer of the New World and will be researching this famous person for a research project. This project will take time to plan, create, investigate, and master. Your child may need to go to the public library to obtain information to use in class as well as at home. This project includes a cover page, title page, essay on the explorer, student drawn portrait of explorer, map of exploration, several activities enhancing facts about explorers, and a reference page. As you can see, this project requires time, time, and more time. The students will be given time in school to work on this project; however, it is essential that the project is also worked on at home. Any work that is completed at home should be brought back to school so the work may be continued during class time. The students should be prepared to work on this project AT ALL TImes
Cover Page: The cover page should include the explorer's name, child's name, date, and small illustration (this is not the portrait page).
Title Page: The title page should include the explorer's name, your name, subject (Social Studies and Language Arts), school's name, teacher's name, date, and room number.
Essay on Explorer: Write a report on your explorer. It should be typed or written neatly. Your report must be in paragraph form and it must have an introduction, body, and conclusion. Your report should reflect most of the questions below.
Who is your explorer?
Where and when was he born? When did he die?
What country, countries, organization, or company did he work for?
When did his exploration take place?
Where did he explore?
Why did he explore these places? What was he looking for?
How many people went with him?
What types of problems did he have during his exploration?
What were the results of his explorations?
What were some of his accomplishments?
How did the place he found get its name?
What other interesting facts have you found about your explorer?
Explorer Portrait: Draw a PICTURE OF YOUR EXPLORER portrait style. The portrait should depict or show what the explorer looked like during his time period.
Map: Include a MAP that TRACES ALL THE ROUTES followed by your explorer. This map must also include a map key, a compass rose, and symbols. This is a student made map. No reproductions.
Three Extra Credit Activities: 1. Acrostic Poem, 2 cinquain, 3. timeline
Reference Page: Include a Reference Page at the end of your written report. This page must include a list of sources (encyclopedias, internet Web sites, computer software sources, books, etc.) written in appropriate APA style. Again, the students will be given many examples in class for referencing sources.
Typed or Neatly Written: Your whole project must be neatly written or typed. The essay must be written in paragraph form, using complete sentences, correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Presentation to Class! Using a Powerpoint presentation, your child will present all the sections of this research report.

Why do you think the author added the following information to chapter 1, page 8......
"My hat and coat, Per Garson," he called to the old family servant. "Victor's back from Oslo. I've got to go out!" Per Garson, entering with the coffee, all but dropped the tray.

Hello, my name is Pamela Pritchard. I am currently a fifth grade teacher living in Illinois. I have a wonderful husband, Paul, four children, and six grandchildren. Educational Technology has become very important to me as I work with my students on blogs, wikis, and podcasting.
I am learning many things through using twitter connecting with other technology educators and elementary teachers. My user name is PaulPam2 at Twitter and almost everywhere else on the Internet. My husband and I decided on that name because we are always together. When you see Paul there is Pam 2, so that is how we captured the user name.
