Odyssey

Article posted May 28, 2009 at 03:58 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1290

We went to Odyssey last week with all the eighth grade students. It was alot of fun! we went on hikes up the merimere falls and i did the storm king. I think its the hardest hike you could do at odyssey because it was straight up and down and really hard. Sadly i got sick and had to go home early but over all it was sooooo much fun! Ms Thomson is a great cook and the cabions were fabulus. We also did a really cold polar dip in the creasent lake.

Our class went outside and got buckets of sand and poured them into stream tables. We created different channels. Meandering and braiding channels where my faveretes. We took little monapaly houses and created blockings. Then we recorded the data. The houses that did the best was over in the corner and a damn.

Energy Transfers.

Article posted May 28, 2009 at 03:47 AM GMT • comment • Reads 339

Energy Transferrss... :)
Hmm what to say about this one.
Well, when the sun creates energy radiations, which goes to the grass to make it grow, the bunny eats it and stores the energy, then the wolf eats the bunny and stores the bunnys energy, the grasses energy, that the grass got from the sun and then we eat the wolf and we get energy to plant seeds in our gardens that the sun grows the grass. The bunny eats the grass. The wolf eats the bunny. We eat the wolf and it starts all over again. Its basicly the chain of life. =]

Plate Techtonics (boy don't i sound smart) and earthquakes

Article posted May 28, 2009 at 03:38 AM GMT • comment • Reads 380

Hello :)
When you heard someone say a word like Plate techtonics, your probably thinking.. wow that sounds boring and not worth my time to learn about.! well, honestly, it doesnt have much to do about boringness. If you think molten lava, volcanos, earthquakes that could knock over hulk, and land underwater thats older then your great grammother is boring, then you must be boring yourselve!
You see, there are three different main kinds of plate movement bounderie types. divergent boundaries (moving apart), convergent boundaries(coming together), and transform boundaries(almost like switching places).
Earthquakes can happen when alot of things happen, but the more commen way of an earthquake happening is Convergent Bounderies, because when they hit eachother is moves alot around it.
Some earthquakes, you can't hear by ear or feel with your body of hands. But, there are people in the world who travel around and specialise in finding the vibrations made by earthquakes through special mechenery that can help them pin point the location or the epicenter of an earthquake these people are Seismologist's.
An earthquake produces waves that travel away from the earthquake's epicenter, like the ripples in a pond when you throw a pebble in. The earthquake produces three different kinds of waves Primary waves or P waves; Secondary waves or S waves; and Surface waves.
If you are interested in learning more about Earthquakes and shifting plates then contact Mr Gonzalez's blog and im sure he would be happy to answer any questions i didnt get around to.
Thanks and read up on more blogs =]

Temp/density

Article posted March 9, 2009 at 03:29 AM GMT • comment • Reads 155

Sooo.
in class Mr G kindda showed us how tempature effects density in two ways. Ok..
way number 1:
He took a metal rod, with a ball on it, and he took another one with a metal hoop on it, he could fit the ball between the sides of the hoop and go through, he heated it up with a fire thing, and the ball on the end expanded, so it wouldnt fit back into the hoop untill it cools down.
Way number 2:
He took two water bottles, one with hot water and one with cold water, the one with hot water had red food die in it, and the cold on had blue, he tipped the cold one ontop of the hott one, and the waters switched, so the hot water was on top, so that means temp does effect the density, the hotter the water, the less dense it is!

Floating Crayon Blogg!

Article posted February 6, 2009 at 03:59 AM GMT • comment • Reads 429

We did a experiment called the floating crayon lab. It was cool, you see we used, salt, and 3 light crayons and 3 dark crayons. Then we took a cup and a popcyle stick.. and put all the crayons in the water and if one floated, which it didnt.. sadly.. then we would record it. After that we would add one spoonfull of salt and then mix it and record the data, well the color of the crayon and how many spoonfulls of salt, the whole point of this was to tell, if the color of the crayon changes weither or not the crayons float, and really it didnt, it only changes the way it looks. What matters, is not the color, but the density, the density of typical tap water is ushally around 1.0. If you add the crayons and one floats, that would mean the crayons density is less than 1.0, the density of water. The reason we added salt was because salt increases the density of the water, so the crayons will float.

Erosion and Weathering:)

Article posted February 5, 2009 at 03:57 AM GMT • comment • Reads 339

: O
Weathering and Eroision is the process that shifts the earth! when weathering takes place is can make hard stone have wind lines in it! and also, erosion can be as simple as a pot hole or crack in the road to as complicated as the grand cannion!
Weathering is like Wind, Rain, and any other weather you can think of. Erosion is like earthquakes, shifting plates, (That creates Tsunamis)
There is a constent conflict between forces that cut down the surface and ones that raise the surface. The two kinds of weathering are pysical weathering (mechanical change), and Abrasions, Ice Wedgeing, and Exfoliation.
~Abrations~
Wearing down of smoothing of a material due to constant collitions like beach glass.
~Ice Wedgeing~
Break up due to repeated freezeing and thawing, the bigger the crack the more water gets in which creates the snow ball effect.
~Exfoliation~
Peeling away the surface layers, caused by changes in temp and pressure or vegitation (trees, grass.
Roots wedge into pores and cracks splitting the rock.

Ps.
Is this enough info Mr.Gonzalez!!

But its not at all, Grasslands have a lot of animals and one of the most peaceful place ever, in the human world. Animals in the grasslands come in all sizes. And there are no trees exsept by rivers. I will add the video to show you so you can learn more.

Bakeing Soda And Vinagar Lab.

Article posted September 12, 2008 at 08:52 PM GMT • comment • Reads 83

Hii.
We did our baking soda vinagar lab, yes i know sounds like we are in third grade, but we arnt.
The Materials we used where 3 test tubes, test tube holder, baloon, baking soda, vinagar, 50 ml beaker, 250 ml beaker, popcyle stick, tunnel, safty googles. It was fun! We got funky results though. We got a little bit confused because i was the only one paying attention during the instruction! And i was only kinda paying attention in the thing so yea. What happened was that when we put the balloon full of vinagar into the bakeing soda the balloon got filled up by carbon deoxide, Our results where all messed up we got like 36 25 24 Its weird.

Our Plants!!

We have been trying to plant milkweed and carrots.. but its not working out about the hydropoinc gardens, something went what i think terribly wrong. All the planting pots tipped over and made the water a complete mess!! it was horrible!! there was dirt clogging the drain and water was still pumping so it almost overflowed and there was dirt in the water and everywhere. It was gross and weird and all that at the same time. We where trying to think of a way to keep the things to tip over.. meanwhile a few kids got hit in the face with pin things and suff like that soo we desisted to use gravel just to weigh down the plants!! Noone has brought in there gravel yet so were not quite sure how thats going to work out.. also the soil peoples plants dont seem to be sprouting at all.. and thats not good. So we desited to plant them anyways into the plugs but the soil we have isnt verry rich! so we are still hopeing that works out for us!!

This is when the world gets hotter from useing gas and other things like that and it melts ice caps and bergs.. Its horrible Because The Penguins could die and so could the Polarbears. Its really sad because if the earth average temp. Raised by 6 degrees the whole earth would be flooded with an inch of water. Global warming is something we CAN stop and its verry importent we do. We live on an earth with a fragil atmosphere.. if that breaks we would all die. we need to keep our earth as heathy as possible to prevent this from happening to everyone behind us.. or else there will be no 25 centery!

Hydroponics.

Article posted April 14, 2008 at 05:00 AM GMT • comment • Reads 269

Hydroponics Is A Form Of Gardening Without Soil, In Other Words Only With Water. One Of The Good Things About Hydroponics Is That The Roots Of The Plants Can Grow More Freely And You Dont Have To Worry About Over Watering Your Plants. But There Are Also Bad Things About Hydroponics And That Is That They Dont Naturally Get Enough Nutrience To Grow Good And Heathyly And Also There Can Be A Limit To The Kind Of Plants You Can Grow, Because Of Over Watering Chances. But About The Nutruence Level We Put Kind Of A Substance On The Bottem As Soilish Stuff And It Helps The Plant Grow. There Are Many Forms Of Hydroponics But I Was Abbsent The Day We Did This So I regret To Inform You I Have No Idea What Those Forms Are But I Know That There Are Alot. Its Very Exsiteing. My Group Though Has Chosen Soil So Yeah, And We Get To Grow.. Carrots. Whoot.
Well Have Fun Doing Yours Or Learing More..

It Was Fun. After That We Had To Put The Egg In Either Dionized H2O Or Ethnic Alcahol. And Then You Had To Measure The Egg By Putting It In A Beaker, With Water And Then Seeing How Much It Goes Up For The Area. And Then You Had To Put It On A Scale. And We Also Did It In Aphid Spray, Soda And Coffee. It Was So Cool, The Coffee And Soda Both Died The Egg But The Aphid Spray Just Make It Poisonis.

Ok. Suppose you are on another planet. Suppose you just helped the aliens on that planet have a better more earth like atmosphere. But as you went to visit them you get off your space ship and you see something weird thats like green and covered in vegetation and you don't now if its alive or not? Its not moving so.. on your way back to your ship after a long day you see that there's more of it so you take some in a plastic container. You get home and you go up to your room. You then remember how to know if somethings alive or not! So you study it for a few days because you are on winter break. You see in your new microscope that it keeps breaking off and making a whole new one. So it reproduces and that means its alive so you check that one off your lists. Then you give it some water and it soaks it all up and seems to grow more. So it drinks and maybe eats check that one off your list. Then after a couple of weeks and then weeks turn into months you see that it began to change colors until it wouldn't reproduce and then it wouldn't eat. So it died was this thing once alive? So you go back to the planet and you tell them what had happened and then they tell you, "Yes it was.. because we have been studying your planet's vegetation also and we found some of the same results!" So you ended up finding out that that yucky green stuff was alive and now you know that it means to be alive and how you know if the thing you see is alive or maybe not.

Fire isn't alive, Rocks aren't alive But trees are even though they don't move.
