In class we learned about p-waves and s-waves. P-waves are compacted waves and can go through solids and liquids. S-waves on the otherhand are rollers, they roll along the earts surface and can not go through liquids like water, and that is how scientist can infere on the earths crust.

My 8th grade class and I went to a place called Camp David Jr. for a whole week. We went on all these hikes and learned all about the Makah indians and other things about the pacific northwest. Overall it was pretty fun. Way better than when my class and I went to a Cispus back in 6th grade just because there was more things to do and the camp was a lot nicer.

Rivers and Streams

The main objective for a river and a stream is to make its way down hill to the big ocean. But, it doesnt cut through the land it lets the land take down the easiest way possible. Usually a stream will meander which means it just winds back and forth wherever the land takes it, like i said before. The reason it meanders like this is because it slows the river down so fish can stop and rest wherever or whenever they would like.
Vegatation! grows around the river or stream becaues for one the roots help make it so the bank doesnt callapse and two it provides shade for the river/stream so the water doesnt warm up to much and kill the fish.

Plate Tectonics

The earth that we live on is, in a way, divided into different parts. all the different plates is the reason why the earth is split up. There is different types of plates. Some plates crash with others, some slide, and some move away from other plates. Plate tectonics are amazing because over thousands of years our planet has transformed. Some island have split in half and others have come together with other islands or even whole continents. Around th plate boundaries( like state boundaries, where one ends and another begins) is where a lot of earthquakes and volcanoes happen because the plates our crashing, or sliding underneath each other. Usually, new land is found where the plates have moved away from.

Floating Crayons

In class my teamates and I did a lab to see if by adding more salt to the water, the order in which the different crayons floated up would change. Heres what I got.
When I changed the amount of salt the order in which the crayons floated stayed the same because your not changing the crayons, only the water. Our highest data point was 4grams of salt and our lowest data point was 3grams of salt. I wonder what would happen if you heated up the water.
We also came up that by adding salt to the water things float better in it because you increase the density of it.

Weathering and Erosion

Weathering and erosion are the proccess that sculpt and mold the earth's surface. Weathering is the breakdownof the material by air, water, plants, and animals. Erosion is the movement of mountains and other large land masses.
There are some solutions for this though. You can plant trees abd grass in places that are not stable so the roots can help stable it. Hoofgrid or stablefrid is what the park people use on there trails so the trails dont fall a partand get eroded. At the beches if you put large sticks in the ground it may help the sand from blowing away.

Tempature and Density

In class we did a couple experiments with heat and density. In one of them Mr. G put a rod through a hole that was a perfect fit. Next he heated the ro up and then the rod diddent fit in the hole until it cooled down. So that means that when stuff heats up the molequels speed up and they expand.
I also learned that cold water is less dense than hot water. Like in a lake for example, if its a warm lake its usually warm on the top but if you dive down far enough it gets cold.

In class me and my partner made a commercial about Coniferious Forests or taigas. They are located in North America, upper Asia, and upper Europe. The biggest threats to them are loggers and forest fires. I live in an area with Coniferious Forests. The trees that make them up are evergreen trees and also cone-bearing trees.

Baking Soda+Vinegar=Big Balloons

In class, my partner and I blew up a balloon using baking soda and vinegar. We changed how much baking soda we used. We added 1cm. of baking soda each time. With 1cm of baking soda it got the size of about 2 eggs, 2cm. 3 eggs, 3cm. 4 eggs. Our prediction was correct because we thought that the more baking soda we used the larger the balloon would get, and that's what happened.
