Memorial Day Weekend

Article posted May 27, 2008 at 07:28 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 570

During my long weekend I missed school on Friday becuase my brother had a baseball tournement a long ways away. I didnt stay in a hotel I stayed with my family that lives nearby. I missed school on Friday becuase my mom wanted us to spend time with our family. We usaully dont see them so we had to. The first game of the tournement my brother played a team that they had lost to before. Their name is Mudville. My brothers team ended up winning 11-1. The next game my brothers team played a another team that they had already lost to. Their name is Stampede. My brothers team started out really bad that game. Their first pitcher gave up 10 runs before they pulled him out in the third. The next pitcher pitched the rest of the game and gave up 6 runs. In the last inning my brothers team scored 4 runs but that was not enough. The final score was 16-4 and my brothers team lost. The next day my I wasnt their to watch my brother. I was spending extra time with my family. Their first game my brother played a team he had beat last year. Their name was Pennensula. My brothers team won that game. the next game they played a team named the Diamond Jaxx. They lost that game. The Diamond Jaxx were a really good team who got 2nd place in the tournement. The 3rd and final day of the tournement my brother played a team that he had beat the year before. Their names were the Timberjacks. The first batter of the game hit a triple and scored the first run of the game. The score was 8-5, and the bases were loaded. My brothers team mate hit a triple to tye the score. The game in the 7th was 8-8. They ended up going into extra innings. Its weird how they do extra innings in that tournement. They start with the last out of the 7th inning on 2nd base. The Tomberjacks were up first. The guy on 2nd base stole 3rd. Then they got a hit and he scored. Then they got 3 outs and my brothers team was up. They started with my brothers team mate stealing 3rd. Then there were 2 outs and the bases were loaded again for the same guy who hit the clutch triple. He ended up getting the game winning single. The final score was 9-8. Then they had to play a team my brothers team never beats. They werent that good this year so my brothers team should win this game, but the other team was from very far away and they wanted to get home and not play. But my brothers team wanted to play so they did anyway. They lost 11-5. They ended up getting 6th place.

No Taxation Without Representation

No Taxation without Representation
By: Lemony
May 20 2008

In 1662 King Charles granted a charter to Connecticut Colony giving the colonists the rights to make their own laws (Speare, 70). Assemblies elected by the colonists made laws, set taxes, and raised companies of troops, called militia to defend the colonists (Carter, 8). In 1687, King James, wanted British Parliament to make laws for the colonists (Speare, 75).

In 1765, British Parliament could make laws for the colonists. The King needed to pay for the French and Indian War so he made laws to tax the colonists (Harcourt, 266).

The King started the Sugar Act in 1764 (Harcourt, 272). “This tariff angered colonists. But what bothered them most was that they had had no part in making this tax law” (Harcourt, 272). The King and Parliament all hade a say in passing laws. “Unlike other British citizens, the colonists could not elect lawmakers… but Parliament was quick to remind colonists they were British subjects” (Harcourt, 265)

The Stamp Act was another blow to the colonists’ democratic ideals. The colonists had been practicing self-government for years (Harcourt, 263). The Stamp Act of 1765 was another attempt by Parliament to get the colonists to help pay the war dept. “The Stamp Act required colonists to pay for a stamp (to show they paid the tax) or all paper goods like newspapers.

Parliament added these new laws to show they could still make laws for the colonists (Harcourt, 277). The Stamp Act Congress met to get the act repealed. Patriot James Odis said the famous quote, “No Taxation Without Representation!” (Harcourt, 274). These British laws were directly against the democratic ideals of self-government the colonists had been practicing for 100 yrs.

The colonists did not get to elect representation into British Parliament. They did not have any say in the tax laws they were being forced to pay. The King made a third law that angered the colonists, the tax on tea, 1773(Maestro, 7). The colonists believed in democracy (Harcourt, 263). The colonists were not represented in British Parliament and believed the only way to ensure their rights was to fight for them.

The colonists were British citizens living in America. When The Sugar Act, The Stamp Act, and The Tax on Tea were trampling their rights, they first appeared to the King and Parliament. When that didn’t work they protested. Eventually, the rally cry of “No Taxation without Representation” would lead the colonists to fight for their freedom. The colonists wanted a true representation government.

“The Congress sent an appeal for peace and harmony to King George and suggested that Parliament get rid of all the unconstitutional laws controlling America (Schanzer, 27). In 1776, in the Revolutionary War, British colonists fight Britain for the right to become American citizens and be truly free.

Final writing Asignment

Article posted March 12, 2008 at 10:13 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1263

Final Writing Assignment
Dear Mom and Dad,
One reason we can go to Alaska is we could see the Iditarod. Another reason is Uncle Danny lives in Alaska.
There is some great history to the Iditarod sled dog race. One of the first people to live on the Iditarod trail was the Eskimos and the Inuit people. There was gold discovered in Alaska at a time (gold rush). Alaskan people started to get sick. This sickness was called Diphtheria. A relay of dog sled teams had to run and get the medicine that would cure Diphtheria. It is the only medicine that will cure Diphtheria. The first Iditarod was in the year of 1973. The winner was Dick Wilmarth. His lead dog was named Hot Foot. It took Wilmarth 20 days to finish the race.
The weather in Alaska is cold in the winter, but some people tell me it’s hot in the summer. In the winter there are snow blankets and thick ice that cover the seas.
There are lots of ranges in Alaska. One is called the Alaska Range. Another is called the Brooke Range. There are also rivers in Alaska. One is called the Yukon River.
In school we have our own musher that we study. The musher I study is Matt Calore. I really hope he wins the race, but he’s not on to pace to win. Matt started out with 16 dogs and now he has 8 as I’m writing this letter. The least amount of dogs you can have is 6. He might have to drop out. In the start there were about 100 teams. Now there is only 83 (as I’m writing this letter). I really hope we can to Alaska.

From,
Lemony

38,028/ 4= ?

Article posted February 26, 2008 at 05:44 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 1262

My class is working on big division (/) problems. This is the problem Professor McGonagall: 38,028/4=?. This is how I figured this out.
38,028/4=?
First you need to subtract the problem into the biggest multiple of 4. I know I didn't explain it very well but that's the best I can do.
38,028-36,000=2,028 so the basic fact is 36/4=9
2,028-2,000=28 so the basic fact is 20/4=5
28-28=0 so the basic fact is 28/4=7

Then we need to solve the problem. I broke the 38,028 into a 36,000, 2,000,and a 28.
We need to solve 36,000/4= first. this is how I solved it:
36/4=9
360/4=90
3,600/4=900
36,000/4=9,000
Next we need to solve 2,000/4=. this is how I solved it.
20/4=5
200/4=50
2,000/4=500
Last we need to solve 28/4=? That's easy: 28/4=7
Very last we need to get the answer. 9,000+500+7=9,507!!!
38,028/4=9,507

Once there was a man who liked to ORGANIZE. His name was John Hancock. He signed the DECLARATION of Independence. He also loved to EXPLORE. He was an INSPIRATION. But he was still for ORGANIZATION. John Hancock was the DEFINITION of ORGANIZATION. He would INSPIRE others to ORGANIZE. People ADMIRE John Hancock. John Hancock signed his name extra big on the DECLARATION, becuase he wasnt afraid of the British. He thought the British would try and DISPOSE of him. That is what John wasn't afraid of. There were three things about John.
1. He liked to ORGANIZE.
2. He really liked to ORGANIZE.
3. He really liked to ORGANIZE.
This is mostly a true story.

I had another long weekend becuase Monday was Teacher Work Day!!! My AAU basketball team had a tournement in a city 2 hours away. The first game we played the 6th best team in the state and lost. The next game we played a team that wasnt very good and won. Then we went back to the hotel and went swimming with my team. Then we played the semi-finals against a team that weve played a lot but only won against once. We lost once again. Then we played a 6th grade team in the 3rd/4th place game. We won and got 3rd place out of 6 teams. The next day was Monday (TEACHER WORK DAY!!!). My brothers and two of his friends went to go watch a movie. Me and my friend went to one of friends house. He had a trampoline and it was snowing. We had an idea. The springs on his trampoline were broken so went to go slide on it. It was snowy and slippery on the trampoline. I had another good long weekend.

My class has been learning about the Revolutanary War, and Slavery. We watched a movie called Amzing Grace whice is about slavery. Every day we watch School House Rock (America Rock). We watch movies about George Washington and Ben Franklin. We have reasearched lots about the war and slavery. These are some questions Professor McGonagall asked me.
1. Why did British Parliament decide to tax the colonists living in America?
British Parliament taxed colonists becuase they did not like the king and thought the king was unfair. British called Colonists TRADERS!!!
2. Why did the colonists decide not to pay the taxes?
They thought the taxes were unfair so decided to boycott.

Long Weekend

To start off my long weekend my AAU basketball team played in a tournement. Our first game was at 9 am. First my team played a team we beat a lot of times in an exibition game. We won in double overtime by 4 points. Later that day we played at 1:20 pm. We beat a team we never played before by 40. The next morning we played at 9 am (once again). We beat 4th graders by 40. In the semi-finals we played a team that we had already lost to and won by 6. Later that day we played a really good team that we have lost to a lot but beat one time in the championship and lost in overtime by 3.
The next day my brother, my dad, my uncle, and I went to watch high school basketball. The first game was a really good one. One team has one of the best guards in the country. The next game came down to a final secong shot. The team I was rooting for was down 1 and laid it in with 1.5 seconds left and won. This team also has one of the best guards in the country. The next game was not an exciting game. One of the teams won by 40. The last game of the day was a really good game. This team also has one of the best guards in the country. I had a great long weekend

Revolutionary War

Article posted December 11, 2007 at 09:46 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 360

My class is learning about the Revolutionary War. We watch this video called School House Rock. It's a movie from a long time ago. It was made somewhere around 1973. It songs about the Revolutanary War. There is one called No More Kings. Its about King George the 3rd. It talkes about when the pilgrims sailed on the sea to find a place to live. It talkes about how in the begining they were missing England but they didn't think King George's rules were fair. There was a part in the song where they sang about the Boston Tea Party.

There was another song called Fireworks. When they say fireworks they do mean regular fireworks but also they mean gunshots. They talked about how 56 people sighned the Declaration of Independance.

My favorite song was Shot Heard 'Round The World. It talkes about how and where the war started. They also sing about the war.

The last song is called The Preamble. It talkes about the first part of the Declaration of Independance. The first part of it was called The Preamble.

Subtration Stratigies

Article posted December 3, 2007 at 10:00 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 170

Hi people,
In my class we are working on big subtraction problems. One of our stratigies is called The Beastly/Easy. You keep one number beastly (big) and break the other number up so it is easy. Here is an example.
3333-565=?
Break up the 500 into a 300 and a 200.
Break up the 60 into a 30 and a 30.
Break up the 5 into a 3 and a 2.
3333-300=3033
3033-30=3003
3003-3=3000
3000-200=2800
2800-30=2770
2770-2=2768
My answer is 2768

Hi World,
John F. Kennedy died becuase some people didn't like his rules. He was shot in the back of his Cadillac Limo. J.F.K. had a really famous quote. "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." I think that means don't ask what your country can do for you do stuff for your country.

I used to think Prime #'s were only odd #'s and I used to think Composite #'s were even #'s. Well... actually I never even knew those words existed. Now I know that Composite #'s have more than one factor pairs, and Prime #'s have only one factor pair. I am still trying figure if two is the only Prime # tht is even because there might be even more.
