Animal Reports

Article posted February 24, 2013 at 09:38 PM GMT-6 • comment • Reads 4654

In science this year we have been hard at work learning about animal classification and adaptations. To showcase what they have learned, students each researched an animal of their choice to write a research paper on. We would like to share our final products with all of you and invite you to comment or ask questions about what we have learned.

What we've been up to

Article posted September 14, 2012 at 02:15 PM GMT-6 • comment (2) • Reads 3668

We're happy to see you again. Quadrangles, parallelograms and other 2D shapes are things we've been working with in math. We made shapes with our straws and pipe cleaners. We've been learning about angles. We learned that vertices are points that connect the sides of a shape.

We learned with Bill Nye the science guy about amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles. We are learning the characteristics of these groups. In science we have been writing animal fact cards to prepare for when we write our animal reports.

We are reading Nightmare at the Book Fair out loud. It is a good book. Each of us now have made goals for our September reading.

We are having a great school year so far.

Our First Weeks of School

Article posted August 31, 2012 at 12:38 PM GMT-6 • comment (1) • Reads 879

In our first two weeks of class we have learned about all kinds of things. We've been doing reading, math and science. In science we are starting to learn about classification. We are going to group animals into mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish. They are vertebrates. Worms, insects and mollusks. These animals are invertebrates. In reading we've talked about what good readers do. We are doing a 40 book challenge. Each of us has to read 40 books this year- even Ms. Reidy. We defined what reading is. (Check back for our Wordle on that) We also are working on choosing good fit books. Another challenge we are doing is to read 1 million words each. We should be reading at least 400 minutes a month at home. In math we are learning geometry. We got new math textbooks.

It has been really hot this week, so we've gotten out early. Our teacher is learning about us. We are having fun! Thank you for looking at our blog. We hope you'll come back and join us during our year of fourth grade.

First Week of School

Article posted August 29, 2011 at 03:02 PM GMT-6 • comment (1) • Reads 835

We had a wonderful week at school. One of the things we did was make a time capsule. We included how tall we are, how big our hands and feet are and some of our current favorite things. We did some cool art projects. One of them was our self-portraits. We picked out new books. We are going to read more than 21,000,000 words this year! We are reading Nightmare at the Book Fair. It is the best book ever.
There are 21 students in our classroom. We have 11 boys and 10 girls. We are excited about our classroom economy and can't wait to get our first paychecks! We are also excited about Mastery Club! It is going to be an awesome year!

Students have been studying the genre of biographies and learning all about some really interesting people. As part of their project each student created a pipe cleaner person of their subject and wrote a short "Important Poem" to sum up each person's accomplishments. We hope you like learning more about these special individuals.

We are back...
After some minor technical difficulites and a super busy holiday season, we are back on the blog. Students worked extremely hard before Christmas on a research project finding out more about animals. Each student has posted their animal report here on their blog to share what they learned. We hope you enjoy the reports and learn as much as we did. Please feel free to offer comments or ask questions about the animals we studied.

October Update

Article posted November 11, 2010 at 05:38 PM GMT-6 • comment • Reads 776

The time really got away from us and Mrs. Grover was gone so we haven't had a chance to post what all we have been up to.

Here is a quick update:
In math we learned about graphing and data collection. We surveyed the class and made several graphs. We even used the site Create A Graph to help us build one of our graphs. We have started some review of multiplication.

In reading we have been focusing on mysteries. We continue to do the Daily 3. We read at least 25 minutes each day plus our nightly 20 minutes. Our class loves to read!

In science we continue to study animals. We took a field trip to Fontana Park and did some hands on work with birds and learned about how their different parts are adaptations that help them to survive. We also got to look at amphibians like the tiger salamander, a toad as well as a couple reptiles (a snake and a very friendly box turtle).

We've been learning all about the Northeast region in Social Studies. We wrote our first pen pal letters and sent them off to our friends in California. We can't wait to hear back from them.

It has been a busy couple of weeks and we are excited to start sharing more on our individual blogs. Check in soon for our mystery reviews.

For the past two weeks we have been hard at work!
Last week we kicked off our at home reading program. We are trying to read 25,000 days (Each day is 20 minutes of reading.) so we can have a party at the end of the year. We as a class are trying to get 1000 AR tests taken this school year. In September we took 82 tests.
In math we have been doing Nifty-Fifties where you can do a lot of different math problems. We have been doing Accelerated Math. Our class goal is to get 1000 100% papers. We got 93 for September. As a class we master 269 math objectives in Accelerated Math.
We are learning about invertebrates. We getting ready to take the test over vertebrates. We are learning about worms, mollusks and insects. They are invertebrates. We are going to dissect a fake worm soon.
In social studies we are learning about natural resources that we use. We are also learning a little about products and landforms of the United States.
We have worked hard getting our pen pal letters typed and printed so we can send them. We also worked hard on our cursive packet during writing. We have daily grammar. We have also been writing fall poems.
For art we are working on tesselations. We played BINGO at the care center for the first time. We saw the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) at the Black Hawk Children's Theater. We learned an Old Joe Clark song in music. We got to go to the Homecoming parade on Friday.
We have had a great two weeks.

Reptiles, Writing and More- Oh my!

Article posted September 20, 2010 at 03:07 PM GMT-6 • comment (1) • Reads 927

We were so busy last week we didn't get our blog written. In science we answered mastery club questions about mammals- almost everyone is a member of the mastery club now! On Thursday we started an art project called tesselations. They are cool and fun! (Some of them were hard!) David Nieves, the reptile guy, brought a few reptiles to show us. One was a giant python named Maggie. He talked about writing skills. He let us call some of his writing BORING then he fixed it and made it fun and exciting. We also got to call him slimy because he was sweating and slimy but snakes aren't. He was proud of us! (:

We started learning about landforms. We started Accelerated Math and Nifty- Fifty problem solving cards. We got a new student. We had our spelling test. The class made charts that have the five groups of vertebrate animals to help us study the characteristics. It was a short week because of the holiday. Mrs. Grover taught us how to play spelling battleship. We are getting pretty good at the Daily 4 in reading. Mrs. Grover did reading interviews with most of us. We will finish them next week. Mr. Buresh was our substitute. We had a good time with him. We played lots of different games this week in music, p.e and in the classroom. It was another awesome week!
