Polar Bears
What animal is known as the “King of the Artic”? Yes, you guessed it, the polar bear. Polar bears are warm-blooded mammals. Warm-blooded means that their body temperature stays the same at all times. They have thick very soft white fur. Also, females give milk to their young. Babies are born alive and all breathe with lungs. Now that you’ve learned that, lets learn about what they look like.
What does the “King of the Artic” look like? A male polar bear weighs 650-1,750 (259-794kg) and is eight feet (2.4m). A female polar bear weighs 330-770 pounds (150-349kg) and is 6.5 feet tall (2.4m). It has thick, soft, and fluffy white fur. Their feet are padded so when they walk on ice they won’t fall through it. And also polar bears are one of the largest land animals on the earth. Now that you know what polar bears look like, lets go into their den.
Where do polar bears live? Polar bears live in the artic where it is very cold and tundra. My animal is not migratory but it does hibernate. Hibernate means they take a long sleep in winter until spring. Polar Bears live in dens where baby polar bears play when momma is asleep. But, if they become hungry or they need nursed, they wake up momma. They also live in Artic Canada and Hudson Bay. Okay, so you’ve seen the den, right, now lets see what they eat.
What does the coolest animal EVER eat? A polar bear eats berries, geese, and grasses, which makes it an omnivore. They are predators to penguins, seals, etc., and it is prey to hunters. And when they are on they’re way to go hunt they usually look for ringed seals first because they are they’re favorite. They also have padded feet so when they are on ice they won’t fall through it. But, they also have very sharp claws and teeth to tear off flesh. And when they’re hunting they have white fur to blend in with snow and ice so they won’t be seen. So, you’ve tasted what they eat (hopefully not), now lets see they’re behaviors.
What are polar bears behaviors? Polar bears enemies are hunters and people. To defend themselves they use their very sharp canine teeth, claws, and their size for a warning like “don’t mess with me, or else”. Polar bears are diurnal which means that they are active during the day. And they do hibernate in the winter because they are bears. Also if a polar bear doesn’t eat from 10 to 14 days it will switch it’s body to another chemistry (hibernation chemistry) and it will hibernate – even in the summer. Thank you for reading my report. To learn more about polar bears, visit a public library near you.
