Bud, Not Buddy

Article posted May 20, 2008 at 08:57 AM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 533

At first when I saw the old version of this book and saw the cover, and saw just a kid and a suitcase, I was like “Ughhh this must be a boring book.” But, my friend wanted to read a book together, so she encouraged me to read Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis. It is an AWESOME book, it is about a boy name Bud, who is in search of his father. All that he has is a suitcase with some flyers about a singer, who he thinks is his father. He encounters lots of people during his journey. But that’s not all, you NEED to read this book!

Petey

Article posted May 20, 2008 at 08:46 AM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 407

Well, first of all, I would like to recommend a book that I thought was AMAZING. If you would like to get interested into a book of hope and energy, then I suggest that you read on. The book that I’m going to introduce you to is called, Petey. It is mainly about a baby that was born with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a disability of movement, which makes the baby deformed. Back then, they thought that meant that they were idiots. But, that didn’t mean that they were idiots. Well this baby of course grows up. During his growth, he meets new friends and lots of difficulties. But, he has a best friend that also has a disability. That friend stays with Petey for a very long time. There is MUCH more to this story, so I encourage you to read it, in order for you to find out what else happens during his life and to find out what happens to his best friend.

You should thank me for what I discovered.

Socrates
I lived a long time ago like around 300BC. I am the one that discovered philosophy. The way I solved issues or confusions was very different from others. Because of my way of answering, people hated me. For instance someone would ask, “What is life?” and I would reply, “What do you think life is.” If it wasn’t for me, we wouldn’t be able to solve ordinary life problems. Since the people around me hated me so much, they decided to poison me with a plant called Hemlock. I knew I was going to die, but I drank it anyways. I was the teacher of Plato, and then Plato taught Aristotle. They were both philosophers. Now all of you philosophers out there use my method, which is called the Socratic method. That is why you should thank me for answering questions my way.

Scicon Has To Go On!

Article posted March 6, 2008 at 03:46 PM GMT-8 • comment • Reads 289

Dear Board Members,
My purpose of writing this letter to you is because I thought that Scicon was an awesome experience. It would be a bummer for next year’s six graders, if they won’t have the opportunity to go.

Well, the schedule at Scicon is not at all complicated. The organization of it is very good.

The purpose of Scicon is learning about Science but in a whole different way than just sitting down and looking in a textbook. I learned about global warming, where water comes from, types of rocks, natural resources, the four Rs (Reduce, Rebuy, Reuse, and recycle), types of birds, adaptations, human and animal parts, water insects, stars and constellations, what the Indians did and with what, types of trees, nutrient cycle, and the conservation pledge. (I give my pledge as an American to save and conserve the natural resources of the earth, which are soil, minerals, forests, water, and wildlife).
At Scicon, we shared cabins with students from other schools. This gave us a chance to socialize. Because of that, we made friends. Having a cabin also helped us stay tidy.

Everyday, we would have breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the John Muir lodge. Before eating, one of the staff members would read us a quote, and our table would have to discuss about it and try to figure out what it means. Whichever table would be the most polite and have the best opinion about the quote would get the quartz to keep on the table until our next meal. Eating in the lodge helped us improve our manners and I t also was a place to socialize.

We would also have two trails everyday. The system about trails was very cool. Our trails would have animal names like Salamanders, Foxes, Quails, Owls, Ravens, and so on. The trails were the parts of Scicon that taught you the most. I went on Bear Creek, which was about insects and catch water insects. There was Bird Watching, which we got to go on the lookout for birds with binoculars. There was a trail called Natural Resources, we also learned the four R’s. We also went to a museum where they had real animals alive and dead. At the museum, we also got to do some of the stuff that the pilgrims used to do. We also went to the tree nursery, and that is where we learned about the nutrient cycle. The last one I went on was about rocks – we learned about different types of rocks.

On Thursday, the day of our elective trail, was outstanding. You would earn your elective trail, by having personal excellences. The elective trails were, Sky Trail, Eagles’ Point, Dead Man’s Falls, Line Dancing, and Quartz Mine. There are a lot more that I can’t even name.

I understand that we are having problems with money right now. We could sell items to save up money. I think we should really try hard to save Scicon. Scicon is a once in a lifetime experience.

Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez

Comparing and Contrasting Dr. King and Cesar Chavez

Both Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King made a big difference for today’s life. What they did have some differences, too.
They both lived a harsh life as kids. African Americans weren’t able to play with others that weren’t colored. When Dr. King would play with his friends, their mothers would put them inside. Cesar had to work very hard as a child, and didn’t have time to play. They lived during the same time. Dr. King couldn’t share schools with whites. While Cesar was less respected because he couldn’t speak English, he was also teased. They were less respected compared to whites. They both prepared a boycott to get the freedom and rights they deserved. They didn't use violence as a weapon. Dr. King’s people rebelled by not using the bus anymore after Rosa Parks went to jail for not giving her seat to a white person. On the other side, Cesar’s people rebelled against farming because their salary wasn’t even a tad bit close to whites’ salary. It’s different on how they rebelled, but they both rebelled.
Even though they were very similar, they were also very different. Cesar was born in 1927, in contrast to, Dr. King, he was born in 1929. Cesar was born in Arizona, but lived most of his life in the Central Valley of California. Dr. King was born and lived most of his life in Birmingham, Alabama. Cesar was Mexican, however Dr. King was African American. Cesar lived until the age of 63; on the other hand, Dr. King just lived to the age of 39. They also died differently. Dr. King was assassinated, while Cesar died in his sleep. Dr. King got through high school and became a pastor. Cesar dropped out of school to work. He only got up to 8th grade, and was a migrant. Dr. King had a home, while Cesar had to look for shelter.
Those are some of similarities of Dr. King and Cesar. Even though they had tough lives, they still had bravery and courage to make a big difference, which we now enjoy.

Who am I?

I was an ordinary young man. I was a shepherd as a young man. I was also a poet and the Israelites were impressed with my military skills. I also lived in the dessert, gathering support from local people. I won the full support of Israel’s tribal leaders. I was much loved by the Israelites. I established the capital of Israel, in Jerusalem. I became king after King Saul died. I had a son, Salomon, who also became king, after I died. I defeated Goliath.

Surfing Competition

Article posted November 5, 2007 at 10:14 AM GMT-8 • comment (2) • Reads 181

Whoosh, whoosh, -the wind was passing by. Chirp, chirp, -you can hear all the seagulls in the sky trying to get fish. Jake was in a surfing competition on an island right off of Florida. It was around 2:00 in the afternoon. The day before the competition, and he was going out to practice his tricks. Everything turned out stupendous because he got better and better at his moves. On his way home, he kept imagining about all the fun it would be tomorrow, the outstanding day of his life.
Beep, beep, beep, beep- the alarm went off He would compete at 1:00 in the afternoon. So he had plenty of time to eat and get ready. He was so anxious to get there he couldn’t even hold himself together. He prepared completely before going to the competition. When he was done, it was about 10:30. So he got on his way. He wanted to go early to enjoy some of the other surfers’ tricks.
On his way, there was a part of the path he was going through that was full of quicksand. He kept on walking, and the next thing you know, he was sinking into the sand. It was a good thing he had taken his cell phone with him. So he called the people that were in charge if the competition. “I need help, I’m stuck in quicksand!” he panicked.
“We’ll be there on the double!” the man replied.
“Hurry, hurry, please!!!!”Jake shouted back.
It felt as if an hour had passed, because only his chest and up was sticking out.
When they finally came, they pulled him out with a rope. Then they took him back to his trailer so that he could change into his other swim shorts. After he changed they took him back to the competition.
He got back at the competition around 12:00. He only had time to see about 2 people. He was next, because of that he was very nervous. So he went out to the ocean and did his moves. Everybody applauded at the end of his course. Only two other people were left to compete. At the end of the competition, it took about 2 minutes for the judges to decide who was the winner. To Jake’s surprise he was the winner! He couldn’t stop jumping up and down that he even started to cry from all of the excitement. His grand prize was $5000 and a big gold trophy, about the size of a two year old.
When he got back to his trailer he packed up and got ready to leave to his home in Miami. He went to the dock and got on the ferry that went to Miami. It took about two hors to get there. He kind of got seasick. When he got home. He called his mom and told her about how he won. His mom was so proud of him.
That was the best experience of his life. He still couldn’t believe it. He was going house his money to fix up his house a little. He had been wanting to do that for the longest time, since he got his house!
