Hoop Dreams Essay

Hoop Dreams Essay
Both Arthur Agie and William Gates had dreams. As a matter of fact, they each had a dream to be in the NBA.

I will tell you a little about William. When it was time to go to high school, William's dunks caught eyes. Two people wanted to give him a full scholarship to Saint Joe's High School. When he was a freshman there, he played for the varsity team. His brother, Curtis, was excited for him. His brother said that he needed to liv his dream through William. William's dad left the house when William was young, but he still gets to see him every once in awhile. William wanted to show how good he was in basketball. His dream could come true.

Now I will tell you a little about Arthur. Arthur's family is very poor. Arthur's dad thinks that Arthur's dream will come true no matter what, but his mom thinks he needs to get going with school. Someone gave Arthur a half part scholarship to Saint Joe's high school. Now William and Arthur went to the same school. As the year went on though, Arthur couldn't pay the other half of the cost. He now owed over a thousand dollars to Saint Joe's. He now went to the public school, Marshall. There he met someone named Shannon. He was his friend now. Arthur's idol was Isaiah Thomas from the Pistons. He used to go to Saint Joe's. Now, Arthur was a freshman  starter for Marshall. Arthur's family is so poor now, that they don't even have electricity. It's not going so well for Arthur.

After a while, Arthur's dad left the family and broke up with Arthur's mom. He went out and started doing drugs. He soon was arrested. Arthur also made some bad choices. He accepted money from drug dealers and got bad grades. His mother was very scared because there were a lot of gangs and bad people where they lived. She didn't let Arthur go out and play basketball on the hoop that much because she thought it was too dangerous. After some more time, Arthur's dad came back. They went to church. Arthur still didn't trust him. When he was a senior, he made the winning shot in a game and got to see his old team mates play when he was eighteen. Colleges started sending letters, but Arthur needed better grades. Arthur's dad has to live his dream through Arthur. His team finishes third in state. He wants to go to college in Missouri. So he does, but his parents split up again. Then there was some hard times Arthur went through. He was robbed, he was almost shot, needed to pass summer school, and his friend Shannon [not friend anymore] got into drugs and went to jail. Also good things. He passed summer school. When he was in college, he had a C average, became a father, but never made it into the NBA.

William later on hurt his nee. He couldn't help his team at Saint Joe's. When he was a junior, he was a dad. He had to have two surgeries on his nee. As a senior, Marquette wants William, even if his nee hurts. William's new dream was to take his team to state, but they never did. He was always good with his grades until he couldn't play basketball anymore, that was when they dropped. He didn't get a high enough grade on the A.C.T., but the second time he did. He was going to Marquette. William won MVP of his team. When he was in college, he dropped out of school, but then came back. He had a B average and got married. Never made it to the NBA.

I think William's dream came true more because he got good grades and tried his best. He went to a good college. Even though he didn't make it to the NBA, he still was a basketball ALL STAR to many people.
