George Washington Carver

In 1864, George Washington Carver was born a slave, in Diamond Grove, Missouri. When George W. Carver was born he was a very sick baby.  He was born a slave, but lived to be a famous scientist.  A frail and sick boy, George developed a talent for drawing and an interest in plants and animals.

George had a contribution that made him very famous. The important contribution was he made many products from peanuts. He made many products out of peanuts. He made washing powder, bleach, shoe polish, metal polish, ink, rubbing oil and cooking oil, axle grease, cattle feeds, 30 different kinds of dyes, a kind of plastic, shampoo, soap and even shaving cream. He also made linoleum, a type of sturdy   washable material, and he made a kind of plastic, shampoo, soap and shaving cream. People said when he pulled out all of his products it was like a magic show. He was called “The Wizard of Tuskegee.” Tuskegee is a farm filled town in Alabama.

There are many interesting facts about George Washington Carver. One of the facts was that he got his middle, Washington, by getting his mail. But do you know why? He got it because there was another George Carver that lived down the street so he picked a middle name, Washington. Another fact is that no one knows what year he was born. People think that he was born in 1864.

On January 5, 1943 was a sad day. Today is the day when George Washington Carver is not with us anymore. He passed away when he was 79 years old. He was buried on Tuskegee campus.
