Canada is a democratic country, a place where the citizens are able to vote for their beliefs. Every single thing that happens in this country has to first be recognized as the best choice for the country by receiving the majority of the citizens' votes. However, this new form of government that the Liberals and the NDPs are offering with the help of the Bloc Quebecois is not a system that we are familiar with. The Liberals and the NDPs are planning to confederate to form a new party with the Bloc Quebecois backing them up. This way, they are certain that they will get enough votes to out-number the Conservative Party. Some believe that this new government system may be beneficial to the country. However, there are also others who oppose this new form of government and I am one of them.
Canada has always been a democratic country since the colonies united. Every 4-5 years, we would have an election to choose our prime minister. There would be a candidate for every political party in Canada and they will try to win over as many people as they can by convincing them of their ideas and future goals for Canada. The candidate with the most votes will become the new chosen leader of Canada. This was how the Canadian government worked for the past several decades until a few days ago when Stephane Dion, Jack Layton, and Gilles Duceppe came up with this new idea. I believe this is not benificial to the country in any way. Our federal election had only been about 2 months ago, and the citizens agreed that Stephen Harper was the right candidate for this country. Why are the Liberals, NDPs, and Bloc Quebecois trying to become the leaders of this country when it was already decided that they are not the best choice?
For years and years, Canada strongly believed in the democratic government system. When the Liberals, NDPs, and Bloc Quebecois are creating a coalition government, they are now tweaking the government system that we wanted and had, to a government system that we didn't want or needed. One of the things that Stephane Dion mentioned in his speech when he was proposing his idea of a confederation between the parties, he stated that Harper does not have a solid plan for Canada's future. However, I do not understand how he can say such a thing when we, the citizens voted Harper as the best candidate. By saying this, Dion is opposing our opinions of what is right for the country, as well as changing our government system entirely to a completely different one that we have never voted for. Dion is now taking away our rights as Canadian citizens away from us. This is why I believe we should stick with the democratic government system that we had for many years.
