Global Warming Synthesis
What is Global Warming?
Global Warming is the world heating up because of Greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are made up of carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Methane (CH4) and water vapour. The sun’s heat escapes into space and some heat is trapped by the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases make the atmosphere layer get thicker. When the atmosphere layer gets thicker, more heat is trapped and Earth gets warmer.

What causes Global Warming?
Global Warming is caused by pollution. Growing rice, farm animals and growing crops makes methane. It goes into the atmosphere. Water vapour inside clouds is also a Green house Gas. Volcanoes, wild fires, vehicles using fossil fuels, factories and power plants make carbon dioxide. Factories and fertilisers make nitrous oxide.

What is Global Warming doing to our Planet?
Global Warming is causing oceans to heat up. If the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic, some countries will be flooded. Major cites at risk may become a part of the seas. Low islands are expected to be flooded by the end of the century. There will be more storms and hurricanes around the world. Plankton is the most important food source in the sea. Plankton doesn’t like warm water. If Plankton dies all other marine animals will die. Droughts will happen more often in many places. That means there will be no crops to grow and people will starve. If Greenland melts the sea currents will stop and Europe might go back into an ice age. The last ice age in Europe went for 9000 years.

Ten things you can do to stop Global Warming.
1. Change to energy light bulbs
2. If it’s not raining don’t play PS2 or TV
3. Turn the light off when you leave your room
4. Instead of using the heater, wrap up warmly.
5. Plant more plants
6. Use a timer in the shower.
7. Shower instead of taking a bath
8. Recycle and compost
9. Take the bus to school or walk to school
10. Buy NZ made
