It's Been A While . . .
I see it's been over a week since I last posted to our blog. Since I've been giving about one blog writing assignment a week to my students, I suppose I should try to maintain the same kind of schedule.
Last weekend I had wanted to edit and upload a few more of our fourth graders' recent podcasts (see them on our podcast page at smls5.com), but I had another podcasting deadline to meet. Next week I head to Minneapolis with several of our Saint Michael staff for a national convention of Lutheran educators. Somehow, through my online network of tech-oriented educators, I ended up as a presenter of a technology mini-session. I chose as my topic: podcasting in the classroom.
It's been about 1 year since I started creating podcasts with my students. We began last Spring and got in a good 2 months before the 2006-2007 school year ended. Now, we've been at it for all of 2007-2008, and this year will mark the first full school year of capturing students' voices and, sometimes, their visible work as podcasts. As you know, only recently have we added a regular blog contribution.
Well, I'm mentioning this because, as I chose a few sample podcasts to highlight in my little mini-session, I noticed how we had progressed since last April (2007). The other thing I noticed was that the students have attacked these projects with real enthusiasm and excitement. Finally, I noticed how well student voices communicate the ideas that have been written down. There's something warm and inviting about the human voice when you really listen to what's being said. Podcasts have a way of making you do that.
If you haven't taken the time to listen to several podcasts in a single sitting, try it sometime. These children have some very interesting things to say!
