Immigration letter May 12 1919

Dear Jerzy,
If I make it to America I hope I can find where you live. I have never met you but I have seen pictures of you. I love fútbol do you? I also like playing fútbol, I like playing striker. I hope I don’t get deported. I am coming to find a job I am looking for a job that uses your hands. I have never been on a boat I am nervous. I will be riding in the steerage with no bathrooms. I will miss Polska. I will also miss mom and dad. Can I live with you until I get a job? Will you teach me English? Please send a letter back to me!
From,
Alexander Bellmotski

Dear Alexander,

I was so happy to receive a letter from my little brother today. I am looking forward to finally meeting you in person, after knowing you from Father’s letters for well over thirty years. Tell mother that I will make sure you get settled properly once you get here. You can stay with me and my wife until you have saved enough money for your own place. Our home is small, but there is always room for family.

I have a friend who I think can give you work, but the best advice I can give you for getting a job is learn as much English as you can before you get here. I remember coming to America when I was younger than you, not knowing anyone or more English than “how do you do?” and “please.” It was hard, but I learned. Talk to anyone on the ship over who speaks English, and once you get here, we’ll teach you the rest.

Don’t worry too much about the trip over here or getting deported. Just be wise and do everything you can to keep your health. It is a difficult, even dangerous journey, but I know you will make it here. Think instead of all the opportunities for work here. Surely with your cleverness you will become a wealthy man…and there is a field where some of the neighbors play fútbol here on days off. We could use a good striker! Only, once you are here, you will have to start calling it soccer or everyone will know you just got off the boat.

Be sure and write which ship you will be a passenger on and I will come for you at Ellis Island if I can. If not, my address is below, and I’m sure someone will help. I wish you a safe trip.

Sincerely,
Jerzy
