Ice Cream Survey
We’re back from our break, and so we might as well jump right in with both feet. I liked the thinking and discussions generated (both online & in class) the last time we shared a problem here, so I’d like to do the same with our next problem. Again, I'm posting the details from the problem here and inviting students (and any interested readers) to share thoughts or questions in a comment to this article. Working on puzzles is fun, so if you've already figured out a complete solution, don't give away the ending just yet. It would be great if you could share a thought or two about how you understand the problem or respond to a comment left by someone else.
Since this problem is about a survey question, you are also encouraged to send in your own personal responses to the questions in the survey. We’ll let you all know what the results are when we’re finished.
The Problem
A group of students completed a survey of other intermediate students. They asked these two questions:
1. Do you like cappuccino Fudge Swirl Ice Cream?
2. Do you like pistachio Nut Ice Cream?
Those surveyed were asked to respond either “yes” or “no.”
When the results wee tallied, it tuned out that 80 answered “yes” to the first question, 70 answered “yes” to the second question, 60 responded “yes” to both questions, and 10 said “no” to both flavours. How many students were surveyed?
