Love Story? Pshhh No!
Thump, thump, thump. Hearts beating faster and faster. Palms sweaty. A flush of red in your cheeks. True love? The song “Love Story” by Taylor Swift speaks of love and romance just like Romeo and Juliet but is it really portraying Romeo and Juliet’s relationship correctly. I believe that this song is completely incorrect about Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. The song implies that Juliet ran away with Romeo, and that Romeo finally got permission to marry Juliet.
The song depicts the people mentioned in it to be Romeo and Juliet. The song may allude to the fact that the people are Romeo and Juliet but the song does not quite represent the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet only let a few select people know that they were together and in the song it makes it seem like the families knew they liked each other. This song completely tells the whole story wrong. Sure Romeo and Juliet fall in “love” and so do the people in the song but almost everything else in the song is incorrect.
In the song it say that Juliet told Romeo that she will meet him somewhere so that they can run away together and that never happened in the really happened in the play. In the original play Friar Lawrence set it up for them to meet up in Juliet’s tomb and run away but Romeo had no idea about the arrangement. In the song Romeo and Juliet were just suppose to meet up but in the original play Juliet was playing dead and Romeo went to go see her because he was so sad that she was dead.
In the song is says that Romeo got permission from Juliet’s father to marry her and that never happened in the play. Lord Capulet never knew that Romeo and Juliet were together until the end when the two bodies were found together. It implies in the song that Lord Capulet told Romeo to stay away from Juliet but in the end gave up and told Romeo that he could marry Juliet and that she needs to pick out a dress.
In conclusion the song “Love Story” does not properly allude to Romeo and Juliet.
