Germans vs. Romans Essay In social studies we were asked to write a 5 paragraph essay comparing life, culture, religion, law, and army. This is my essay.

The Germans had a very simple style of life whereas the Romans had a very organized, structured way of life. There were differences in culture, clothing, and law. This essay will talk about all these topics and more.

There were similarities in their cultures, but the Germans preferred to make their own way of life. The Germans lived in small huts surrounded by farms and pastures where they would keep their cattle and livestock. The Romans lived in marble homes called Domus, and apartment buildings called islands. The Romans would keep shops and the rich had slaves. The Germans would herd cattle which would provide food and clothing. The Roman men wore tunics and sandals while the women wore dresses and sandals. The German men wore woolen tunics and close fitting trousers. The tunics would be covered by a cloak fastened by a brooch on the right shoulder. The women would wear women would wear skirts made of yarn or one piece sack-like dresses. They would occasionally wear scarves to keep their necks warm in the cold weather.

The Germans were strong war-like people. The Romans were innovative by using previous inventions made by the Greeks and improving them to make them more powerful, accurate and easy to move. The Germans however, would make their own equipment and armor and they had very little armor. They did fight other empires and kingdoms and had a strong army. Rome had very different generals with different strategies and beliefs. The Romans also had a very strong army but as mentioned before, they made previous inventions more innovative.

German law was very different from Roman law. The Romans believed that law came from the emperor but the Germans believed that it came from the people. The Germans memorized their laws and passed them down instead of writing them down. Their laws were based off of more religious views rather than political views though. An example would be they would punish anyone who didn’t follow their same beliefs . They would often times be thrown out of the society. The Romans had written laws. An example would be the twelve tables. The Germans had a very different system than the Romans.

So, in conclusion, there were some similarities between the Romans and the Germans. There were also many differences between them. Between their daily life, army, and law.The Germans were strong, independent and had their own way of life and culture. The Romans renewed older cultures from different civilizations. These are the differences between the Romans and the Germans.
