mass and weight Mass is the quantity of matter contained in a body, while weight is the forse by which the body is pulled to the earths center of gravity.

Correct! So in Science weight is a measure of force so mass has to be what you measure without the force of gravity. That's why you have to balance masses so that gravity doesn't make a difference.
