Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. mass and weight Mass is the quantity of matter contained in a body, while weight is the forse by which the body is pulled to the earths center of gravity.

Correct! So in Science weight is a measure of force so mass has to be what you measure without the force of gravity. That's why you have to balance masses so that gravity doesn't make a difference.
