#276-September 19-20, 1863: Battle of Chickamauga George Henry Thomas obtained the nickname, "The Rock of Chickamauga" because during the Battle of Chickamauga, when James Garfield, an officer for the Army of the Cumberland, carried orders to General Thomas from General Rosecrans to retreat, General Thomas said he had to stay behind to make sure his Army was safe. Garfield reported to General Rosecrans that General Thomas was "standing like a rock." This was how General Thomas got his nickname.
