 1862: General Ambrose E. Burnside Ambrose Burnside was born on May 23, 1824. He was the fourth child of nine children. When he grew up, he became an American soldier, inventor, a politician, a railroad executive, and an industrialist. In Rhode Island, he served as governor and as a U.S. Senator.
