Our Turangawaewae Trip
'A place we stand.' Over the last 4 weeks we have been learning what it is to be part of a learning community. We looked at ourselves as learners, then we looked at building our learning expectations and finally creating our learning environment.
As part of learning about what it is to be part of a learning community, we had a two day trip and sleepover at school. During this time we undertook a number of experiences that included our 'maori community', 'our local community' and our 'school community'.
We visited Apumoana Marae, tried to do a Scavenger Race around our local community of Rotorua (the weather just wasn't on our side), created and participated in team building games, had a sleepover marae style in our school hall and then had a fun day getting to know each other at the Blue Lake on the Friday.
A big thank you must go to our parents who braved the foul weather on Thursday - although we didn't get the Scavenger Race done, the kids had a ball getting absolutely drenced and jumping in every puddle they could find (I secretly think the parents had just as much fun as the kids!), to the parents who worked tirelessly in the kitchen with limited equipment to feed 100 odd people due the cookout having to be cancelled, to those parents who got very little sleep at the sleepover and those who then braved the Blue Lake walk with some very tired children, swimming in the cold Blue Lake, cooking 200 odd sausages and played with the kids on the playground. Your help made the two days a fanastic experience and time for the kids.

Hi. My name is Whaea Andrea and have taught Year 4’s for the last 8 years. I have moved to Senior School, teaching Year 5’s. My background is that I was a Flight Instructor / Pilot for some 15 years and had opportunities to fly in the remote areas of Arhem Land, North Australia and in Papua New Guinea. I love teaching and with my background love anything technical and to do with computers.
