Kindy Dictionary

Today while discussing our letter of the week ("K,k") and looking at our "K" page, a thought came to my mind. I suggested to the children that perhaps we make our own Kindergarten Dictionary with all the wonderful words and pictures being created. I received several looks of confusion regarding what the word "dictionary" meant. So I threw out the question, "what strategy can we use, when we don't know what something is?" I was very proud when I received the answer, "ask an expert!" Right away another student responded, "Mrs. Wills (our librarian) is the only book expert in the school." So we lined up and proceeded down the hall to ask Mrs. Wills (aka "the book expert") what a dictionary was. Mrs. Wills took us on a tour of the library showing us various examples of dictionaries. We loved seeing the dictionaries which showed us sign language, pictures and most of all, the spot where the school housed its biggest dictionary. (See below)

We were pretty excited when we got back to our room about making our own dictionary. Please keep the pictures coming for the letter "K,k" this week.

Thanks for coming to visit me in the library! I think that making a Kindergarten dictionary is such a great idea!
