Which dessert takes the cake?

When something "takes the cake", it usually means it's the best example of something. This phrase was invented at cake-walk strutting competitions in the late 19th century. At these competitions, couples who won received an actual cake as their prize. We think cake really does "take the cake" when it comes to desserts. Cake has been around for thousands of years. The first "cakes" were probably fried bread or cheesecakes. The word "cake" originates from a Viking root. It comes from an OldĀ  Norse word "kaka". Today, cakes come in many different flavors. What is your favorite?

Vocab words:

Dessert- food that is usually sweet

Fondant- a gummy paste that tastes like sugar. Used to decorate cakes.

Lollipop- hard, flavored candy on a stick
