I think they wanted to race home because throughout the book Mr. Halloway wanted to be a kid again and he took advantage of the opportunity. They also did because they were so happy about defeating the carnival.

I think that they race home because earlier in the book he wanted to run with the boys and have fun like them so now he is getting a chance to do that so they are now.

I think Jim, Will, and Mr.Halloway ran home because they were happy to be alive and together. "Today was just another day in October in a year suddenly better then anyone supposed it could ever be just a short hour ago." (Bradbury 289)
