The Dust Witch died because Mr. Halloway replaced the bullet in the pistol with his "smile." The Dust Witch swallowed the bullet and died.

The witch swallowed a bullet with a smile on it. That is why she died. Mr. Halloway says, "She's dead but there is no wound" Bradbury 251).

She died because she swallowed the bullet with Mr. Halloway's smile. He mouthed the words "The Crescent moon I have marked on the bullet is not a crescent moon. It is my own smile. I have put my smile on the bullet in the rifle." (page 249) Then, either on purpose or as a result of shock, she swallowed the bullet when he fired the gun.

Also in ch. 47 the witch dies because Mr. Halloway shoots her with a smile, and that kills her because she cant stand happiness. Mr. Halloway thinks, "Did she choke on my smile...?" (Bradbury 251).
